What does this mod do?
Realistic Rain removes the rain flickering by replacing the rain texture, used in Phoenix Lighting Mod (PLM) by Mishikedman. The mod aims to do this with a minimal loss in visual quality. It is designed to be used exclusively with PLM. There are 3 versions to choose from and a detailed description of each in the Q&A. PLM Rain V3 is the recommended version. Before commenting, please refer to the Q&A section below. I hope you like my mod!

How to install:

  • The Witcher 3 Mod Manager (recommended): Install the contents of your chosen version using TW3MM and be sure to give my mod priority over Phoenix Lighting Mod.
  • Manually: Unpack the contents of your chosen version to your Witcher 3 game directory. If you do not have a custom mod priority, be sure to place my mod over Phoenix Lighting Mod, to make sure that my mod gets loaded first. The naming scheme (modA_PLM_Fix) should take care of this for you.
Important: If you are trying a different version of my mod, make sure you delete the previous version before installing the new one!

How to uninstall:

  • The Witcher 3 Mod Manager: Simply uninstall the mod like any other. Nothing special.
  • Manually: Remove the folder modA_PLM_Fix from the "mods" folder in your Witcher 3 game directory.

Q&A:

What does this mod fix exactly? - It removes the rain flickering in PLM, which some users experience. The mod does this with a minimum loss of rain detail. Whether the rain looks better with my mod is a matter of personal taste. I believe it does. My mod is not about fixing PLM, which is one of the best lighting mods out there. It is meant to give people like me, who are annoyed by the rain flickering, more options, so we can all enjoy Mishikedman's work in our own way.

Which version is right for me? - I definitely recommend PLM Rain V3. It removes the flickering and replaces the rain's background texture, so it looks like a true rain shower. The textures for the individual rain drop particles are the same ones used in PLM. That being said, there are other options:
PLM Heavy Rain is for those of you, who find PLM Rain V3 too weak. It uses a different rain texture with a unique rain drop distribution and larger rain drops. This is the closest I could get to a truly intense rain without introducing flickering.
PLM + Vanilla Rain combines PLM with the rain textures from the original vanilla game. The rain is still not the same as in vanilla, because the .csv weather files and some .env files are also modified by PLM, but it is close enough. Use this if you love the way the vanilla rain looks or don't like the other mod versions and just want the flickering to stop.

Where can I download PLM Rain V1 and V2? - They do not exist. PLM Rain V3 is my 3rd iteration of the retexture and the 1st one published.

Which game version is Realistic Rain compatible with? - The mod has been tested in 1.32 and 1.31. It should technically work with older versions too.

Is Realistic Rain compatible with older versions of PLM? - I have tested with 8.1, 8.3, 9.0, 10.1, 11, 12 and 13. In some of the older versions the rain is a bit weaker, especially in daytime, but the flickering is gone and it still looks great in my opinion. Realistic Rain should be compatible with even older versions of PLM too.

Is Realistic Rain compatible with other mods? - It only replaces 1 or 3 textures, depending on the version, so there should be no conflict with most mods. Mods that retexture the rain are, of course, incompatible.
Important: Below you will find a categorized list of known incompatible mods:
Category 1: Incompatible for SOME players
  • Improved Particle Systems - No Shaders Version (modImprovedParticleSystemsNoShaders) - Credit to nicolepremier for the discovery!
Category 2: Incompatible for ALL players
  • None reported.

Can I merge Realistic Rain with Phoenix Lighting Mod? - Didn't work for me, so I would assume no. If you can make it work - sure.

Can I merge Realistic Rain with other mods? - I have not tried it myself. It should not be a problem, as long as the merged pack has priority over Phoenix Lighting Mod. No guarantees though.

I still see flickering, what do I do? - Make sure you have correctly installed my mod. Attempt a manual install as well.
Important: If you are seeing the rain "start and stop" or "changing power", then this is not a bug in my mod! This is most likely caused by the particle emitters - not the rain texture. I can't fix this without heavily editing PLM, which is not my goal. I do, however acknowledge this problem. I have attempted to make it less noticeable in PLM Rain V3 with the way I created my texture. For the most part I was successful. I have noticed it in a few places, mainly in Skellige, but it does not bother me personally.

I can't see the rain, what do I do? - This is not a bug in my mod! It is a known issue from the vanilla game. You can fix it by following these steps:
  • Go to your in-game graphics settings.
  • Move the Shadow Quality slider left or right.
  • Close the menu.
  • Open the graphics settings again and change your Shadow Quality back to whatever you want.
  • Close the menu and enjoy the rain!
Many thanks to LukeSparow for the solution!

What do I do, if I find a bug? - Bugs are not expected, since my mod is a retexture. If you do find a bug, please follow these steps:
  • First of all, make sure you have not hit the mod limit.
  • Check that my mod has priority over PLM in the mod manager.
  • Attempt a manual install.
  • See if the bug occurs with other versions of my mod. For example, if you are using PLM Rain V3, then try PLM + Vanilla Rain.
  • If nothing works, please don't post in the comments - file a bug report!
Important: The bug report section has been public for a sufficient amount of time and unique downloads to discover any issues or incompatibilities. Since I am no longer actively working on this mod, the bug reports are now disabled. As stated above, bugs are not expected due to the nature of my mod. If you are experiencing any problems with Realistic Rain, please make sure you have read the description carefully. The Q&A section contains solutions to all presently reported issues.

What is the effect on FPS? - I have not experienced any frame drops in my testing.

Will the mod be updated in the future? - There will be no further updates to Realistic Rain. The mod should be compatible with any future versions of PLM and will remain available for download.

Conclusion: Thanks again to everyone, who downloads my mod! Feel free to share your opinions in the comment section, respectfully of course. Special thanks to Mishikedman for his excellent work on Phoenix Lighting Mod and for his permission to create Realistic Rain!
