The scanner room only detects objects in areas that have loaded, even in vanilla. More Scanner Room Blips automatically loads areas around the scanner room, up to the max range. If that mod isn't fast enough for you by default, it lets you configure the speed.
Exploring and coming back to the scanner room also helps, as you've noticed.
