A sister project of my STO TNG audio conversion mod ( https://www.nexusmods.com/startrekonline/mods/23 ), STO TOS is a complete audio conversion meant for TOS characters. Not only does it replace the in-game music with tracks taken directly from the 1960's television series, but it also replaces many of the sound effects that Cryptic neglected to.

When I first released my STO TNG mod, it was surprisingly well-received!  However, a great many folks prefer the TOS era over the TNG era.  And so, I now present to you STO TOS:  A complete audio conversion for TOS Starfleet characters, utilizing the same methods in my TNG project!

What does this mod do?

Just like STO TNG, it replaces all (well, "most") in-game music with the actual music taken directly from the series, as well as many sound effects that Cryptic neglected due to how faction files are separated (or rather, NOT separated, in this case).  Like STO TNG, the main focus is strictly on the television series, rather than movies, other games, franchises, etc.  My goal here was the same as before - to create an experience as close to watching a televised episode of Star Trek as possible.

Compared to STO TNG, this project was surprisingly challenging.  There wasn't nearly as much source material from the 1960's show to work with, and the effort it took to edit, clean, and enhance everything to sound acceptable in-game was pretty nuts!  I think you'll be pleased with the results, however!  In its current version, 172 (much more than that since my last few updates!) audio files have been re-recorded, heavily edited, and replaced.  More will be added in the near future and over time.

Installation:
Installing works the exact same way as STO TNG or any other audio mod for Star Trek Online.  It's a simple drag and drop, and the patcher will completely ignore it. 

IMPORTANT:  If you're currently using STO TNG, make sure to move the existing sound folder somewhere safe!  You can only use one or the other!


1.  Download STO TOS.zip and unzip it so that you only have a single folder left that says “sound.”
2.  Assuming you installed STO via Steam, simply place the “sound” folder here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Trek Online\Star Trek Online\Live\localdata

Note: Please notice how there are TWO “Star Trek Online” folders within the file tree. This is NOT a typo. It’s imperative that you’re delving into the SECOND STO subfolder, not the first one. (The first one ALSO has a “localdata” folder, adding to the confusion for many folks.) For Arc users: I don't have the Arc version, but the directory tree is similar, and also contains the duplicate names.

You should know right away if everything has been installed correctly, as you'll hear quite a different tune on the login screen! If you hear nothing, be sure to raise the music volume in your options.

Recommended Audio Settings:
To get the most out of this package, you may have to play around with the audio options to best suit your hardware setup. For me, I get the best overall quality with these levels:

Overall volume: 100
Fx volume: 25
Music volume 100
Ambient volume 65
Interface volume 100
Voice volume 100
Notification volume 100

Your results may vary depending on your system and what activity you're currently engaged in.  In Cryptic engine games, the sound channels can often become overwhelmed and/or unbalanced.

Known Issues and factoids:
The music tracks aren't quite as diverse as I would like, for the sole reason that there simply isn't enough from the actual show to work with.  All "exploration" and "mission" tracks are covered, however.  As for the combat sequences, that was the tricky part.  Unlike the newer shows, the original Star Trek used pre-recorded "fight cues" for fight sequences.  And there's only a handful of them that actually exist.  Because of that, the combat tracks are re-used a lot more than I would prefer.  (In STO TNG, I have a different song for literally everything, and it's much more diverse.)

Another glaring issue is the TOS tutorial areas.  I was trying to be accurate with it by adding the music that plays during the actual episode "The Galileo Seven".  It came out great! ...while you're on the planet.  But then, OF COURSE, the game decided it would be best if the track continues to play once you beam up to your ship!  As a result, you have snarling Tauriens stalking you through the decks!  (They came with the recording, and I had no way of removing them.  For this reason, this track only exists for the tutorial.) 

And of course, the same caveats that apply to STO TNG also apply here.  Due to how the engine works and how the file system is structured, the specific track that plays is often unpredictable and random.  The game only really cares if you're in combat (condition green) or out of combat (red alert).  The "randomness" of how often certain  tracks are repeated can be quite annoying - particularly with the New Romulus theme that also plays at inappropriate times rather than just on the planet.  (You'll be hearing it in space a lot.)

I was also a bit at a loss of how best to represent "modern" areas such as DS9.  At the very least, I found what I consider a terrific solution for the DS9 exterior, and I hope you'll agree!  I discovered an amazing rendition of DS9 by the Vitamin String Quartet, and it's an absolutely jaw-dropping performance.  Why this version and not the original from the actual show?  My reasoning was, had DS9 come out in the 60's alongside TOS, I suspect it might sound a lot like this, due to how much "cleaner" and unprocessed it is compared to something from the 90's.  I really hope they don't mind me using this piece, because it's simply gorgeous!  For those who would rather hear the original DS9 track from the early seasons of DS9 however, it is included as an optional file.  (The file contains the same recording I use in STO TNG.)

For Starfleet Academy, I took a similar approach and found another really terrific rendition - this one by an incredibly talented Sam Dillard.  "Where No One Has Gone Before" is an amazing fusion of every Trek opening from TOS to Voyager, and it literally brought me to tears.  I really hope Sam Dillard doesn't mind me using it for this mod!  Alternatively, the Star Trek Enterprise opening "Faith of the Heart" (full version) is what I used in STO TNG, and it's available as an optional file here in place of the Sam Dillard track.

Important note:  Whenever the next Starfleet Academy "particle scanning" event comes up, two tracks will play over each other. When that happens, just turn either ambient or music down while you're there.  During all other times of
the year, the Academy will work just fine as intended with the settings I
listed with the installation instructions.

And finally, while I mainly avoided movie tracks, there are two exceptions: Earth Space Dock (the Enterprise flyby suite from The Motion Picture just seemed really perfect for this era), and Delta Quadrant space.  When you enter the Delta Quadrant, I wanted it to feel special, but without using Voyager music in order to best fit the overall TOS theme.  The only solution I could think of was to use the opening from Wrath of Khan.  Apart from the Sam Dillard suite in the Academy, these are the only two places where movie tracks appear.  Everything else is ONLY from the original television series.

Final words and full list of changes:
Just like STO TNG, STO TOS will absolutely continue to grow!  It's a lot of work, but both have become serious passion projects of mine.  Bugs are bound to crop up whenever Cryptic launches a major update, but I will keep plugging away at it, and adding what seems appropriate - even if I eventually have to settle for duplication (which I would rather not do).  At the time of version 1.3, I estimate overall audio coverage in the game to be around 99%.  (All that's really missing now are cut scene replacements!)

In the meantime, I've been keeping detailed notes of each audio file I discover, so that if any mod author would like to attempt what I'm doing, these lists of changes in both projects can save them a LOT of time and work of tracking down which FSB package contains which file, and what those files actually are.  You're welcome!  :P  (Be sure to check the STO TNG lists, too!)

This is another absolutely jaw-dropping performance!  Had DS9 come out in
the 60's alongside TOS, I suspect it might sound a lot like this, due to
how much "cleaner" and unprocessed it is compared to something from the
90's.  I really hope they don't mind me using this piece, because it's
simply gorgeous!
