I was so aggravated that I couldn't get this to work, used it in FO4 regularly. I just figured it out.
#1 Enter the command screen and click on NPC to get their ID and then close the command screen.
#2 Rotate your focus off of the NCP and reopen Command screen.
#3 Type "openactorcontainer 1" (without quotes), hit enter and close command prompt.
#4 un-equip any equipped items you want and enjoy your new duds, (FYI: Clothing only seems to work on named NPC's and guards, generics normally just have miscellaneous junk).

Alternatively you can use the Bat file included which should do the same thing but you will still need to command line, click, close, rotate, command line , enter bat file prompt, close.

sometimes you need to leave console command and re-enter also move away from the npc after you have selected them sometimes that helps

I have also tried many times. Tried leaving and re-entering console command and tried moving away from the npc. Also tried just waiting a few times as you said their inventory may not open immediately. nothing lol any suggestions? I installed correctly and everything.

    Sticky post is very helpful.
Was confused that "openactorcontainer 1" command didn't always work properly.
Just don't look at NPC when you want to check it's inventory ;)

Wasn't working for me as some crew member IDs were not coming up as NPC-something .. maybe because they were interacting with something on the ship .. once you get an ID that starts with "NPC" whats describe in the sticky should work.

Thanks for the sticky and thank you to some other commenters, now I can strip all the cute boys 'naked' - like the Great Serpent intended.

      update
No need for mods to remove Sam Coe's Hat
Just open the console, Select the NPC (make sure it says SamCoe_NPC etc...) then type unequipall

better to select sam coe then use showinventory then use unequip (his hats id) that way he keeps the rest of his stuff

That’s only available for regular companion/crew, not the random specialists in flight suits that you recruit from the bars. The randos have no interaction other than saying hi.

can also be done with any npc and you can use it to take outfits from an npc but I have had no luck with space suits

    this is awesome

i was JUST thinking a few minutes ago that it stinks we can't change the apparel on the generic crew members you can recruit.

tested and confirm was able to change the outfits on all the generic crew members onboard. got sick of seeing so many wearing the generic flight suits

    thanks!!!

edit: i also tried using this to see if i could get the non wearable outfits off the npc's in new atlantis and neon but didn't work, dang

Wouldn't matter if you could get the item -- it doesn't appear that they will work on the player. You can equip the invisible items using the equipitem console command, but it'll just make your character naked -- so those outfits seem to lack appearances for the player.

you can equip items to your crew members and companions, you just talk to them and tell them you want to trade items then it opens a trade menu where you can then give them stuff and press B Key while having your mouse over it for them to have them equip it, the only thing is it shows your character in the preview rather than theirs

The named companions and crew yes that’s right. But for the regular “ballistics weapons specialist” or “fusion engineer” that you can recruit from the bars, you can’t trade with them. When clicking on them, they only say hi captain or everything’s fine captain, etc etc

i have 4 named companion/crew and 3 generic specialist crew members and it’s boring seeing the companions in their own outfits while the generic members are in boring flight suits.

this mod solves it for me so I can access their not normally available inventory and equip outfit

if the non wearable outfits are in the npc inventory and you can see them using this code/mod try pressing the unequip button on them when highlighting the outfit like when equipping items to your companions then try a take them
