I was so aggravated that I couldn't get this to work, used it in FO4 regularly. I just figured it out. #1 Enter the command screen and click on NPC to get their ID and then close the command screen. #2 Rotate your focus off of the NCP and reopen Command screen. #3 Type "openactorcontainer 1" (without quotes), hit enter and close command prompt. #4 un-equip any equipped items you want and enjoy your new duds, (FYI: Clothing only seems to work on named NPC's and guards, generics normally just have miscellaneous junk).
Alternatively you can use the Bat file included which should do the same thing but you will still need to command line, click, close, rotate, command line , enter bat file prompt, close.
imageso question. I've been able to add items back and forth with the npcs, however I dont see an option to force them to equip it. when closing the menu with the item still in their inventory they continue to wear what they initially had. Any idea?
I have also tried many times. Tried leaving and re-entering console command and tried moving away from the npc. Also tried just waiting a few times as you said their inventory may not open immediately. nothing lol any suggestions? I installed correctly and everything.
Sticky post is very helpful. Was confused that "openactorcontainer 1" command didn't always work properly. Just don't look at NPC when you want to check it's inventory ;)
Wasn't working for me as some crew member IDs were not coming up as NPC-something .. maybe because they were interacting with something on the ship .. once you get an ID that starts with "NPC" whats describe in the sticky should work.

No need for mods to remove Sam Coe's Hat
Just open the console, Select the NPC (make sure it says SamCoe_NPC etc...) then type unequipall
