Introducing:

Little Artisans - Fish Products
Expanding the utility of caught fish and the vanilla preserves jar, charcoal kiln, and oil maker!

Fishing has always been one of my favorite aspects of Stardew Valley, and like many, I was continually disappointed to see fishing fall so far behind other means to generate income in the game. My fishing rods, once glued to my side, now sat in chests, gathering dust.

I had seen a few different approaches to address this. Most of the balance mods I found, while they made fishing more profitable, also flattened fishing, creating less distinction between different seasons and weathers. To me this removes a lot of the vanilla flavor. Another option would be to install a massive mod-pack like Artisan Valley and in addition to buffed fishing profits, enjoy a couple hundred extra cooking recipes as dependencies.

I was looking for a way to improve the viability of fishing into the late game that preserved the feeling and tone of vanilla game without overshadowing any of those vanilla mechanics.

So, taking inspiration from Artisan Valley's smoker, and the use of vanilla assets/machines from mods like, Preserved Fish, and (PFM) Wine to Vinegar, I put together Little Artisans - Fish Products.

Changes:

Oil Maker
  • Most fish* can be placed in the oil maker to produce "fish oil"
  • Sells for a fixed 225g
  • As a rich nutritional supplement, fish oil the edibility of regular quality cheese, and can serve as a substitute for fishing heavy runs for mid-game energy.
  • Fish oil benefits from the Artisan Profession and has associated likes/dislikes with NPCs.

Charcoal Kiln
  • A large selection of fish* and 2 wood will produce a "Smoked Fish"
  • The value of smoked fish is calculated at (base value * 2) + 120
  • 6000m processing time - equivalent to aging sturgeon roe into caviar
  • The star quality of the fish used when smoking is preserved
         - Because of this, the final value of a high quality smoked fish can exceed the value calculation above!
  • The smoked fish retains the "fish" category, benefiting from the Fisher and Angler professions and has associated likes/dislikes with NPCs.

Optional File - Pickled Fish Preserves Jar***
  • Most fish* can be pickled in a preserves jar
  • (base value * 2) + 50 - the standard calculation for pickled goods
  • 4000m processing time - equivalent to aging roe
  • Uses the vanilla "pickles" object

* - Legendary fish are excluded
** - Legendary, crab pot, and certain rare fish like the octopus, and pufferfish cannot be smoked, largely for consistency with vanilla and to preserve the uniqueness of these fish.
*** - The Pickled Fish optional file functions as a stand-alone, requiring only the Producer Framework Mod to work.

Requirements:
This mod is built on top of Producer Framework Mod and Json Assets and requires both mods and all of their required dependencies to function

Installation: Download and extract the Little Artisans - Fish Products file. Copy the extracted folder to your Stardew Valley mods folder.

Compatibility: This mod should be compatible with all fish added by mods that use the "fish" category. Fish added by mods normally marked as inedible or otherwise unsuitable for processing won't be marked as such, however.

Translation and Localization:
This started as a mod for personal use that quickly spiraled out of control. As such, the translations and localization are woefully lacking. It is extremely simple however, which is another benefit of building the mod around base game assets. There's only one significant area where work is needed and I am very open to including any translations that come my way.

Road map and To-do:

- There is nothing on the immediate road map that isn't better saved for version 1.6, when it releases. There's always a possibility of me tweaking/expanding the mod until then, but barring glaring problems, this should be done.

- That being said, this mod adds some balanced, vanilla friendly way to process fish, what about a balanced vanilla friendly fish expansion? Stay tuned!

Little Artisans:
The "Little Artisans" moniker is my hope that I may be able to tackle other areas of the game with the same intention of vanilla integration and balance. There is nothing on the immediate horizon, yet.
