This is a very small mod which adds a rowboat between Solstheim and Tamriel for players who use Random Alternate Start - Reloaded. If you happen to spawn on Solstheim there is no immersive in-game way to get back to Tamriel without using the console. It also places a key inside Hillgrund's tomb so you can escape if you happen to spawn there...

Random Alternate Start - Reloaded by GreyMtnFox is a brilliant mod which spawns your at a random location in Tamriel or Solstheim. However, if you spawn in Solstheim there is no way to get back to the mainland without using the console, as the captain of the ship at the docks will not give you that option unless you travelled there with him from Windhelm originally. There are three mods I know of that do provide a way for you to get back: Passages of the Dovahkiin also by GreyMtnFoxSkyrim Underground SSE by AncientKane and Fyr Manor Special Edition by DarthVitrial. So this is just a very small mod which provides a simpler solution - a row boat between Solstheim and Tamriel. Obviously you will have to find it in order to use it: if you really want to know where it is:

  • The Solstheim rowing boat can be found tethered to the foot of the one of the Dwemer ramps at the Nchardak ruins.
  • The Tamriel rowing boat can be found on the shore north east of the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary at Dawnstar.
 


There is also another location that is problematic: Hillgrund's Tomb - If you spawn inside there is no way out, and if like me you only play survival/permadeath* then you will slowly die of dehydration (although I did die laughing). So I have also placed a key inside the tomb so that if you spawn inside you will actually be able to escape. Again you will have to find it first, if you need to know where it is then:

  • The key itself is in a strongbox on the table opposite the final large treasure chest, but the door to this room is protected by an expert lock.
  • Although you may randomly come across lockpicks, just in case I have placed 12 inside another strongbox on a table somewhere else in the tomb. So you have at least 12 chances to get out...
 


I have tested the mod in Skyrim SE (it is also compatible with Skyrim VR) and checked that there are no conflicts with the vanilla game and DLCs - obviously if you install any mods which place boats in the same places then there will be a conflict.  New Vominheim - SE by venjhammet places the Norfolk Docks close by but there is no direct conflict or overlap. If you find any conflicts or bugs let me know. Also if there any other locations which you cannot escape from after spawning with Random Alternate Start - Reloaded let me know and I will try to add solutions into this mod.

I have now managed to convert the original .esp into an ESPFE plugin (flagged as light) which will not count towards your 254 cap, but will still be sorted correctly by LOOT. I did this using xEdit to compact the Form IDs and then flag it as an ESL - using this Guide on Nexus Mods. However, this means that if you have already downloaded one of the earlier versions you will have to start a new save as otherwise you might get a CTD or corrupted save file...

Making this has refreshed my memory as to just how terrible and frustrating Creation Kit is to use, and although I realise it was never really designed for end-users, I still  can't believe they managed to create such a great game with such an incredibly poor tool...
