I'm not sure if there is a general answer to this question. But for a start a custom NPC (follower) is easier: This tutorial shows where to put the exported mesh / dds files.
You will need creation kit (or maybe SSEEdit is enough) incl stability patch, alternatively the AE creation kit if you need the extra features. The main issue with normal NPCs is that by default they all use the same mesh and individualize only via tri files. NPC replacer mods may add individual meshes.
You will have to find out the NPC (i.e. modification from the base mesh) with these tools and replace them with the tools. For a start I definitvely would recommend to do such a change on a custom NPC with it's own mesh.
You will need to open up races.ini file with a text editor (I use Notepad++) and add the race names (EditorID from their respective plugin) into the ini file, like the ones that are already present. After that, they should work; unless they use a different eye mesh (e.g. Charmers of the Reach).
Where would I find races.ini? I'm trying to use this mod to edit Bird Races of Skyrim SE, but there's no expression sliders for custom races unfortunately
@SPLITS3C0ND Unfortunately I don't think that mod will work even if you edit the races.ini file, as even if it uses a vanilla mesh, the vanilla beast races aren't supported.
@veracruze Hey, would it be possible to get an update to have the vanilla beast races supported? Please and thank you. I was going to try to use the LE port on my Khajiit character, but I found that even if you edit the races.ini file it won't work because the beast races likely use a different mesh and would require different .tri files.
