Isn't it weird how you can find copies of scrolls in so many places, but you've never seen someone write one?

How dumb is it that you can carry around arcane knowledge in a scroll, a book, or even your own head, but your hands lack the skill to make new copies?

Want to write down scrolls, but don't want ALL of the features or options in some of the big cool mods out there that include scrollwriting?

If you've ever thought these things or similar, hi, I made this for you.

Simple Scroll Transcribing adds scrollwriting stations to a handful of locations (court wizards and the Arcanaeum) where you, too, can copy down arcane knowledge... as long as you came prepared!

Transcribing a scroll requires 2 Rolls of Paper, an Inkwell, a filled Soul Gem of an appropriate size (Petty for Novice spells, Lesser for Apprentice spells, etc), and a copy of the spellbook or scroll in your inventory, or knowing the spell as normal. You will receive two copies of each scroll you write. Spell tomes and scrolls are not consumed upon transcription, but they are required to see the recipe.

I recommend mods like Shops Sell Paper to add more paper to merchants and Tinkerer - A Crafting Addon (Crafting + Breakdown modules, or AIO) to add recipes for paper and ink so these basic supplies are less scarce. I also recommend a mod to prevent eating spell tomes, any would do. My current pick is Challenging Spell Learning.

There are three versions of this mod: Vanilla, Mysticism and Odin. The vanilla version has no requirements besides Skyrim (and will should work with any game version - please let me know if this is not true after the recent AE update). The Mysticism version includes scroll transcribing recipes for every scroll from vanilla and the new scrolls/spells added by Mysticism, and spells follow Mysticism's leveling for spells (meaning there are a handful of vanilla spell level changes in the recipes to match). The Odin version does the same as the Mysticism version, adding recipes for all vanilla scrolls as well as new scrolls added by Odin. All plugin versions and patches are ESL flagged.

Xbox port by Snipey360 this way!!!

Scrollwriter locations:
Dragonsreach: To the right when you walk in, behind the war map in Farengar's quarters.
Blue Palace: To the left in Sybille Stentor's quarters.
Mistveil Keep: On the counter in Wylandriah's quarters.
Understone Keep: Perched on a short dwemer column in Calcelmo's research area on the way to Nchuand-Zel.
Palace of the Kings: On a table in Wuunferth's quarters upstairs.

Patches for a handful of interiors mods are included:
  • JK's Dragonsreach just removes a few clutter items that clip with the scrollwriter (no visual change in position compared to vanilla).
  • JK's Blue Palace moves the scrollwriter to a different location in Sybille's room.
  • JK's Mistveil Keep moves the scrollwriter to match the interior shift (no visual change in position compared to vanilla).
  • No patch is required for JK's College of Winterhold alone, but for Obscure's College of Winterhold and JK's-Obscure's combined (with Janquel's patch) there are patches which move the scrollwriter to a study station in the Arcanaeum.
  • An optional patch for JK's College of Winterhold moves the scrollwriter off Urag's desk and onto an empty lectern to the left. This is useful for people who use things like Legacy of the Dragonborn and its many supported mods who find that Urag's desk becomes quite crowded, and would like unfettered access to the scrollwriter. LOTD is not required.

No patches are required for JK's Understone Keep or JK's Palace of the Kings, there are no clutter or layout conflicts so the vanilla positions work perfectly.

Additionally,  there is an addon in Optional Files to add a scrollcrafter to the Safehouse from Legacy of the Dragonborn, it is between the forge and the bench with the varying enchanting stations.

I can entertain requests for patches for interiors, but if it's not a mod I use, it's unlikely I will do so (because I really hate moving stuff around in the Creation Kit). Patches for spell mods that add scrolls (to add recipes to the scrollwriter) will be entertained based on the quantity of spells added. Please feel free to make your own patches, addons, and extensions using this framework though! I'll happily link to them if they are made.

Upcoming:
  • Double checking because I'm pretty sure I forgot DLC scrolls in the vanilla version
  • Dareni spell patches
