Nothing like the Aetherium Forge described in the inscriptions has ever been found within the borders of Skyrim. It may have been destroyed long ago, by the Nord invaders or the Dwemer themselves. Or perhaps it, like the secrets of Aetherium itself, still remains to be discovered.
- Excerpt from The Aetherium Wars, Taron Dreth

Aetherium Alterations aims to provide users with a lore-plausible World of Warcraft style Transmogrification/Transmutation system within Skyrim. It does this by expanding the capabilities of the Aetherium Forge and introducing the Aetherium Alterations Transmutation System.

So What Is It?

The Aetherium Alterations Transmutation System works by combining two pieces of like equipment - taking the stats from one, and the appearance from the other - and producing a transmuted result piece. The system allows players to imbue their favorite weapons and armors with a different appearance while still retaining their original stats and enchantments.

Video Showcase

A huge thank you to Nexus user and all around great guy - because he uses all of my mods :) - liamdev for creating this video for me.

How Do I Access It?

After successfully completing the quest 'Lost to the Ages' and starting up the Aetherium Forge the player will have access to the new Aetherium Alterations Transmutation System.

How To Operate The Aetherium Alterations Transmutation System:

The Aetherium Alterations Transmutation System has two methods of operation. It can either create a transmuted piece of equipment, or revert a transmuted piece of equipment to its constituent parts. The Transmutation System can only operate on two pieces of equipment which have the same type. For weapons, this means they must have the same weapon type (e.g. two swords, two staffs, two bows, two crossbows). For armor, this means that they must occupy the same slots (e.g. two helmets, two robes, two pairs of gloves). For the most part this is straightforward but there are some exceptions. For example, masks can be transmuted with other masks but not with hoods or helmets and vice versa.

Please be aware that there are some limitations placed on transmuted equipment, both for technical and game balance reasons.
  • It is only possible to transmute one piece of equipment of a given type at a time. E.g. if you already combined Dawnbreaker with an Ebony sword, you'll need to revert that transmutation before creating a new transmuted sword.
  • Held and equipped transmuted items will be automatically unequipped and re-equipped when the game is loaded. This allows the 3D model changes to take effect but the script runs quickly and should not hinder gameplay.

Compatibility

This mod is safe to install mid-playthrough as long as you have not already accessed Bthalft. This mod is not safe to remove mid-playthrough.

There are 2 known incompatibilities with this mod:

If you're using a custom race mod that mod must rely on RaceCompatability in order to be compatible with this mod. Otherwise all transmuted armor you create will be invisible on your character.

Any mod that adds new weapons or armor will have to meet a few requirements in order to be used in the Transmutation System. That said, you can still use mods which are incompatible with this one, you just won't be able to transmute the equipment added by that mod.

The full requirements for compatibility can be found on my Github.

I grant anyone permission to make a patch between this mod and another. The process isn't difficult, if you are interested in making a patch and want to know the best way to do it feel free to ping me on my Discord.

Support

Please direct all support questions to my Discord where I can best help you. :)

Known Issues

  • If an armor does not support weight sliders it will not transmute properly and can lead to crashes. I'm working on a fix that disallows transmuting armors without weight slider support which should solve this problem.
