Hmm, for this I would need some more informations: Which race did you choose? Are you using a vanilla beard or a beard from a mod? Have you installed mods that make changes to the beards? Did you save your "helmet-file" after adjusting your helmet? ;P
apparently either my CK is broken and corrupting files or i was accidentally changing something i wasn't supposed to, but every time I saved the file I kept getting a bunch of "error, could not find reference" messages in the .esp.
after about 12 hours of trial and error i finaly got it to work using sseedit and editing the forms that way. ¯\_(?)_/¯
as a separate question, would it be possible to do the same for khajiit beards/facial hair?
I tried to look at the Khajiit beards and make the same edit you did to the human ones but i couldn't find the bodyslot field in the .niff's.
Great that you have solved the problem :D About the Khajiit, I was also not able to adjust them, because how you mentioned they don't seem to have the bodyslot field in the .niff's. Sorry, that I can't help you with this..
It won´t work well, always when you equip your mask the hairs will be removed and your character turns into a bald head... (I put a picture to the images). Also when you equip a helmet at addition to the mask, the mask will be removed. If you want a specific look you could try to make some kind of mashup with nifskope. For example you could extract the hair/helmet/hood/whatever mesh you want from the meshes.bsa file and "mash it up" with the facemask mesh. I could imagine that this works, but I have not tried it before. This would be an option if you have some experienc with nifskope of course.

I enable part 31/41/44 for all helmets that Improved closefaced helmets affects, but they still clip through.
