About

Like the brow fix, this is one of those things you notice when you make lots of characters. The standard game male and female eye meshes are very different. The male mesh includes an extra data field, and has a couple of flags set to recognize this, which also identify the mesh as a male resource (the flag is "vf_male"). The female mesh has no such extra data field, but also has that male/extra data flag set, in two places - why, who knows?

What are the negative effects of this goof? I don't have a clue, but I just set the flags to where they should have been set. See the two Nifskope screenshots to see the specific flags that needed editing.

Note: do NOT, EVER EVER, attempt to correct these two flags in Nifskope. For unknown reasons, the results will insta-crash your game. To make the corrections, I used the nif optimizer to back port these eye meshes to LE and back again. It will automatically set both flags correctly if you do this. I think this is an unintended consequence of the tools intended function, but, hey, if the shoe fits, wear it. This same trick can be used to correct npc facegens, btw (which I need to do myself on some of my older characters). Just make sure in ALL cases (eye mesh or facegen nif) to check the "head parts" box when you do this.

The eye meshes come in two versions, V1 has the cube maps (that add that weird greasy effect) disabled. People ask how I get such expressive looking eyes (see the pictures), well, here is my secret sauce. Let the specular map do the talking, it looks MUCH better IMO.

V2 has the same fixes, but have the cube maps enabled, for those that prefer the vanilla eye look.

Usage

This is strictly a modder resource, for those that are making female npcs or followers. With this installed, when you do a Racemenu export, the resulting facegen will have corrected eye settings. These meshes also include the fixes by HHaleyy and Artsick. If you aren't a modder, you don't need this.

Feel free to tear this mod apart in the comments, in case I'm missing or misinterpreting something. I see npcs by myself and others that have the flags set one way or the other, or in some cases set differently in the two different flag locations, and no one seems to have a major problem. So, in the end, this "fix" may be totally unnecessary, unless you want the eyes to look the way I make them look (as in the V1 version). And/or are just OCD like me.

Credits

This just builds on the prior excellent work of HHaleyy and Artsick to fix eye mesh issues. They can have all the credit. You'll need to download from these two linked mod pages for fixed male meshes (although I believe Artsick has a version with both male fixes included), please remember to endorse them.

Permissions

This is a modder resource. Feel free to do whatever you want with this, within Bethesda's TOS. They are just modified meshes from this game.
