I tried to fix this by giving the giant (much) more health and even set him protected (doesn't work, Aela acts af if you didn't kill him). It seems this is the only fix to not let Aela trigger you. Thanks!
The only workaround I ever found was to kite the giant from the the hill behind the farm. (Couldn't possibly get to him in time to land a blow with my sword.) She'll marry you, either way, though, so I guess she gets over it.
Haha. That is so annoying. You don't know how often I try to avoid that. And it doesn't even make sense what she says. It's as if she runs to you just because she must and then says crap because you didn't help. Why? And why me? there's the Guard and everyone else, but she makes a beeline for me! Hate that part of the start game. I find in default if you kinda go near and see them fighting the Giant, then go far away, she never does talk to me, but I have to stay away and visit somewhere else for a while.
The giant has its own NPC record, its much lower level than other giants. Since they are all essential actors it might be worth also raising the health offset of the giant so that people have more time to help. This is usually something I do in my final patch myself but figured it would have a good place amidst this mod page, if its something you wanted to add even as an optional espfe
This mod has limitations, if it works at all: I killed the giant single-handed with a long-range bow shot, and when I approached them afterward they were already leaving the scene and completely ignored me as if I had contributed nothing. I'm guessing that I took the shot from far enough away that it was outside the trigger radius for the quest... or something.
