Woop woop! Short update from my side. As you can see from the time since the last update, I've long moved on from Skyrim modding. Please don't ask for new features, they won't happen. I'm happy to hear that this mod still works fine even under modern conditions (with Skyrim AE and whatever all that new stuff is, oldmanyellingatcloud.jpg). Have a good year 2022 all of you!

If you don't like the spell notes and the possibility to "cheat" and eat the tomes, you might want to check out Immersive Spell Learning - DESTified
by Hackfield. He took most of the code from ISL and rewrote it using Don't Eat Spell Tomes, a SKSE plugin that adds new scripting events that allow to bypass the Vanilla tome eating behavior without losing compatibility. Of course this comes with an additional dependency, but if DEST would have been around when I made ISL, I would have used it for certain. The spell notes have always been a workaround to allow ISL to be compatible to spell mods out of the box. With DEST, they are no longer required.
Hackfield's mod is early in development, so head over there and help him test the mod! :-)

So, the mod has > 2000 unique downloads by now and has been tested extensively. All the core features work properly and the mod does not interfere with anything it shouldn't. Since I'm not playing Skyrim at the moment and since I'm occupied with other software projects during my spare time, I'm not planning any updates in the near future. I do, however, regularly check this comment section, so don't worry - I'm still here. :-)
Have fun playing and enjoy the mod!

Hey all! Version 1.1 is up. Take a look at the logs section to see the changes. No more duplicated spell notes, MCM option for first person messages and more!

I'm really, really happy to see that there are many others out there that had this itch that urgently needed scratching. If you're happy with how the mod works, it would make me even happier if you took a second to endorse the mod. Thank you very much! :)

hey ameisenfutter, this mod has been a staple in my mage playthrough in SE, then i really missed it when i play my LE skyrim. i just did a test to see if your mod works in LE and it did! all i had to do is extract the bsa and resave the esp in 32 bit CK, probably needs more testing but so far its working like how it should in SE

Cool to hear! I won't support LE, but other people might find this interesting, so pinning this post might be a good idea. Thanks for the tip!

Can anyone attest that this is still working as of the Skyrim AE update?

a couple kinks related to my load order, but it's working fine for me on any spellbook not flagged as read

I adore this mod and it became a must have in my load order since I've gotten it. No more learning master rank spells as a beginner mage. But there some sort of support or patch for the "Experience" mod? Like learning a spell granting some small Exp?
Or maybe trying to learn or practice a new spell, even if you didn't comprehend it granting some skill progression?

I've just started using this and it dawned on me that learning spells appears to give no experience for the relevant school. Seems like a big missed opportunity. I think I'm going to disable it for now, until I can find something to make it a little more worth the time investment. If you found anything since this post, I'd love to know about it.

I know the mod is finished and awesome but i have an idea what i am doing manually maybe as a feature. i  lower the time whenever i am in the college, reason: i can use the library to crossread etc. or asking the professors for help.

Hi, does this mod compatible with Simple Obvious Spell-crafting?, i understand your mod dynamically compatible with any spell mods, but the spell craft mod i mention also add a messagebox mechanism, that makes me doubt the compatibility

Getting a lot of CTD when trying to study. Apparently comes randomly, sometimes changing the area (eg was getting ctd inside breezehome, moved to the streets of white run no probl). My previous run it worked flawlessly so now Im quite confused :-(

I understand the reason stated in the mod page, but is it possible to have the popup on the "read event" and not on the "Added to inventory event"

I like the concept behind the mod but it's annoying to have the popup at this time when you are probably just looting a corpse or a chest.

It will be better and it will make more sense to be able to go home, site on a confortable wizard chair, and THEN being asked while I try to read the so call magic book

And also, is it possible to not destroy the book? I mean.. you take notes, you are not eating the book

Thanks a lot for your mod

EDIT1: my bad, I just looked your code and I saw destroySpellTomes = True... then I saw the MCM option... I am blind!

EDIT2: I also saw the code for the OnItemAdded, I will check the SKSE documentation to see if I can change that by OnReadBook or something....

EDIT3: Ok I found the Auto take notes option... it's fine with that

You thought of everything apparently... well done 😎

Been a while since I worked on the mod, but if I remember correctly, there is no "onReadBook" event or something comparable. Instead, there is only a script directly attached to the book itself (no global event), which wasn't the path I took due to the compatibility issues that would have been the result (which I think is also described on the description page).

      Glad you like it. 🥳

I don't necessarily want to chock this up to a bug. But I was trying to increase the tier level of some spells to make them harder for me to learn because they seemed over powered to me. After increasing one of the spells from a minimum skill level of 25 to 100, when I go to read notes, it says something along the lines of "this spell is too difficult for me to master. studying this spell for 1 hour with master this spell".

So in this case, a spell with a minimum skill level of 75 did not provide the amount of hours necessary to master the spell which I presume is the intended feature. However, a spell with a minimum skill level of 100 only required 1 hour to study to master the spell.

I don't know if the mod is bugged for me, or maybe I don't understand how it works.
I simply can't study. Whenever I buy a spell tome, or pick it up, it is instantly consumed and converted to notes. I can't interact with it in my inventory because it is immediately deleted.
The notes I get also seem different : I have like a hundred notes of restoration, I can read them and it just opens like a regular book. Nothing else happens.
I can talk to mages to learn things, and sleep to learn too, but I just can't learn like it's shown in the pictures. I can't bring up the UI
    menu to study.
    Am I missing something?

You need to activate the Mod in the MCM first.

Would it be possible to do an integration with Wintersun so that studing the notes gives favour to Hermaeus Mora?
