This has always and will ever be related to load order and install order of your mods. Make sure that Simple Children is installed last and FaceGenForKids.esp is loaded low in your load order. If some other mod edits the kids in any way, they will overwrite the faces provided in this mod, causing dark faces.
I will reiterate that there are many patches located in the Optional section of the Downloads, and off-page patches are listed in the Mod Specific Compatibility section of the Description.
I've tried to make the description as concise and straightforward as possible, so please read through it carefully.

Do not install the mesh patch for Child NPC Mods in the installer. I believe that was meant for RS Children only. With simple children the mesh is broken and causes issues, the most noticeable being child's with bald heads, the worst (I've seen) being exploded polygons or broken mesh glitch.
Without the mesh patch installed Simple Children and Wet and Cold work perfectly fine.
I've pre-prepared the STEP Modifications patch to save people trouble and time. The short version is, this mod was written for an old version of USSEP, and has an "Error: could not be resolved" problem in it that causes crashes. Only takes a moment to fix it in xEdit, but not everyone is comfortable doing that, so I've zipped up the patched version of FacegenForKids.esp for you here:
Making my first comment just to say thank you, man. Even after going into xedit and following directions to fix stuff myself, my game STILL hit an infinite load, until I used both the patches you posted. Works like a dream now. Thanks for helping newbies like me! We're hopeless XD
After so many months of trying and failing and giving up on this mod, I read through the comments once more and finally got this working in AE! I know it's a dead mod, but I finally was able to figure it out! Thank you so much for your patch! Now my children are beautiful and diverse, not potato heads or creepy cartoons! :D
Okay, I know that I'm sounding like a broken record, but could someone PLEASE spell this out step by step? Because I still can't figure it out.
I followed every instruction: only left the *tri files of TK Children, downloaded Simple Children, deleted the FaceGenForKids.esp, downloaded the new one for the new version of USSEP that's in the comments, and just put that in my Data folder.
I even went into the "textures" folder in my Skyrim Data folder, found a 'TK Children' folder and deleted it to be sure that I had ONLY *tri files left.
When that didn't work, I uninstalled the mods and then installed everything manually, but my game isn't loading any manually downloaded mods. I don't like downloading manually and I usually use Vortex, but I decided to try it because nothing else was working.
But no matter what I do, every time I go back into the game, the kids have dark, bald, TK faces. What the heck am I doing wrong?
Can someone explain what exactly I need to do to TK Children? I use Vortex, downloaded the mod, installed and deleted everything in the folder but the .tri files, but nothing change in the children, only the dark faces.
I'm on MO2 and I also have no idea what he meant by that installation. Do we simply install the TK mod but leave the esps unticked? Or do we need to go into the folder and literally delete everything one by one except those tri files?
Dentro do TK tem uma pasta com alguns arquivos .tri, a pasta CHARACTER ASSETS, deixa essa pasta e apaga todas as outras, então instala o TK só com essa pasta, depois instala o Simple Chindren
You do literally just what is said in the description.
As repeated by ambuzi below; "Inside TK there is a folder with some .tri files, the CHARACTER ASSETS folder, leave that folder and delete all the others, then install TK with just that folder, then install Simple Children"
If you don't know how to search for a specific file extension in explorer, * followed by the extension (example; *.tri will filter just .tri files).
So do you leave the file structure intact TKChildrenSE/00 Main/Meshes/Actors/Character/Character assets and install the zip file or do you literally pull the character asset folder and its single sub folder and paste that into Data/Meshes/Actors/Character/character assets in your game?
So the confusion comes from wondering if the word "install" is being used literally or figuratively since that literally changes the meaning of what you are supposed to do depending on how fast and loose the mod author is with the nomenclature.
Hi, I know I'm a bit late for the party but I have a strange bug where all the children have grey eyes ? Not like there is no texture or anything, but just... Grey. Did they all turned into werewolves in the process and what can I do to fix their eyes ? Thanks !
Love the mod. Wish the other users could use it, but I honestly had no problems with it.
Just a heads up (for those of you who can get the mod working), the Immersive Weapons Integration patch, and I assume others as well, forward the same, old USSEP record that causes infinite load screen. Make the same changes to it you did for the original mod in SSEEdit.
For a mod called Simple Children, trying to get it to work is anything but simple. I cannot, in it's current state, recommend this mod (for whatever that's worth)

Includes a ReadMe (summary: install the original mod first, then replace the original FacegenForKids.esp with mine).
Hopefully the mod author will just update the original mod to include this so my patch can go away.
If you also use "Beyond Skyrim: Bruma", see my updated Simple Children patch for that, too (here, in a reply to a post by KotoriKaji).
Thanks
