Spent a good amount of time fiddling with this only to learn that there's a similar feature in SSE Engine Fixes that turns quick saves into regular saves, you just have to enable it in the text files. :)
If I recall right, the caveat with this approach is the SSE Engine Fixes merely forces the F5 button to make regular (hard) saves, but the QuickSave menu item in System would still do the usual (potentially game breaking) quicksaves (not normal hard saves). It may be advisable to use the Remove QuickSave Button from SkyUI System Menu.
I'm not sure if latest version of SSE Engine Fixes addresses the above QuickSave menu concern, but I'll check it out myself and confirm back here today.
For a recent playthrough, I've been using My Minimalistic AutoSave Mod - it works seamlessly with AE 1.6.1170, but it does regular autosaves, nor hard saves.
I believe any potential problem with autosaves can be addressed if we quit the game to main menu (so that the running scripts get reset) and then manually load the autosave. Do NOT directly load any autosave from within a game play session, as some scripts may still be running and may not get reset, and that may cause the game save to break or bloat.
Here are the steps I have followed; and just a quick loading of a save - the mods seems to be working; have even reloaded the saves a couple times to see if any hotkeys reset in the mod or not.

Make sure THIS MOD is loaded BEFORE FileAccess Interface for Skyrim SE Scripts - FISSES [Main reason I say this is because THIS MOD has files that overwrite "FISSES" files -- so sense "FISSES" is newer, I assume it should overwrite this mod instead]
Further explanation on Number 2: in your load order have "Named Quicksaves" FIRST, the "FISSESS" NEXT --- making "FISSES" higher priority, letting it overwrite a couple files from "Named Quicksaves"
Once in-game and everything is loaded up, you may have to [I did anyways] bring up the in-game console and type in/run setstage ski_configmanagerinstance 1
Wait until a message in the top-left corner says MCM has registered new menus; and when you go back into the "Mod Configuration Menus (MCM)" it should have an entry for "Named Quicksaves".
I will say; all I did was load it into a existing game, set a hotkey for Manual Save, tested out the hotkey, and then reloaded the game and save a couple times -- and it seems to function. However, no clue about the long term of it.
Also of note; I am running these versions of Skyrim, mods, SKE, etc.:
I've tried this with AE (paid). Rotating saves with a hotkey. It works, but the saves are not in the profile, so you have to choose to show all saves to load them.
I was having issues with the fan made patches for this. Stuff missing, changes seemingly made. I finally fixed this by:
Use the last official release of NQS. Downloading one of the patches, either of them will do. JUST replace the DLL. Take the DLL from one of the patches. ( I recommend Worgs, as he simply just compiled against the new SKSE) Load up.
I was having numerous issues, including the mod not working, or it was just quicksaving without letting me name things, etc. This solved the issue.
I still get an MO2 error "NQS_NamedQuicksaves version 1 (NQS_NamedQuicksaves.dll, Named Quicksaves - A Save Manager patch) reported as incompatible during query."
I've done like you sugested, downloaded Worg's patch and named it "Named Quicksaves - A Save Manager patch", hidden all files except the DLL, having it overwrite the original mod.

ah, ok, i saw a post below
also for anyone wondering, this mod works with skse 2.0.20 if you get the newly compiled files from Worgheart's post below

Any ideas?
Reading the comments I ask myself:
Will this work with SKSE 2.0.19?
The recompiles here are only for 2.0.17.
Is there any alternative to make rotating saves if this does not work any more?
