Functional Backpack Framework (and patches)

It always seemed strange to me that backpacks could not be enchanted - particularly since the "Fortify Carry Weight" enchantment exists, and a Skyrim "bag of holding" would be attractive to any sensible adventurer.

The reason backpacks cannot ordinarily be enchanted is that they provide a carry weight bonus by having a magic effect applied.

However, Jelidity figured out a clever way of circumventing that limit. We apply a keyword to backpacks, and give players a perk which gives them a carry weight bonus when they have an item with that keyword equipped. Having done that, we can remove the carry weight enchantment and the "MagicDisallowEnchanting" keyword from backpacks to make them enchantable!

What does this mod do?
This mod contains a Functional Backpack Framework (FBF) that creates the perk and keyword. The framework was built by Jelidity for Functional Adventurer's Backpack. It is included here in a form that allows more general use with the generous permission of Jelidity.

The mod also contains patches for a number of popular backpack mods. These edit the backpacks to apply the FBF keyword, remove the vanilla Fortify Carry Weight enchantments, and allow enchantment.

Since backpacks are now enchantable (i.e. you can add a Fortify Carry Weight enchantment on top of their innate carry weight bonus), the innate bonuses have been standardised around what I believe are more realistic levels:

  • Small backpacks:      +15 points of carry weight
  • Medium backpacks:  +20 points of carry weight
  • Large backpacks+30 points of carry weight

The weight of the backpacks themselves is also standardised to 3(S)/4(M)/5(L) for most backpacks.

Finally, the mod comes with an optional CID ini, which distributes some of the backpacks to merchants in Skyrim.

Requirements
The backpack mods that you want to patch (see below).
Spell Perk Item Distributor - if you want the carry weight bonuses to apply to NPCs including followers.
Container Item Distributor - if you want the backpacks distributed to merchants.

Compatibility
The framework itself should be compatible with everything. Patches for the various backpack mods will conflict with other mods editing the same backpacks. Descriptions have been added to the backpacks patched in the style of Enchantable Special Item Fix, so that you can see both the innate carry weight bonus and the effects of any enchantments.

FAQ
Q: ESPFE?
A: Yes. Obviously.

Q: Will you add a patch for <insert backpack mod>?
A: Probably not, unless I like it enough that I want to add it to my own game. But permissions are completely open, so feel free to make patches for anything and everything.

Q: The carry weight is too low! I need help lugging around my 40 large dwemer struts!
A: You're struggling with the weight limit? If only there was someone who could help, someone sworn to carry your burdens. Or maybe something like a large, powerful tame animal you could purchase, capable of carrying several hundred kilos of equipment with ease. Jokes aside, you can use Hyperies' mod, which applies carry weight bonuses closer to the original bonuses. And then throw a carry weight enchantment on top of that.

Q: The carry weight is still too low/too high/too similar across backpacks!
A: Change it in the framework. Though do note that you'll have to change the description records in the individual patches too if you want accurate information to be shown in the inventory screen. This, by the way, is also the reason I won't offer patches for different carry weight bonuses.

Q: You skipped a few backpacks, and edit a few non-backpacks..?
A: Yes. Some backpacks appear to be intended to represent enchanted backpacks. As such, it doesn't make sense to disenchant them and allow new enchantments. And some patches adjust a few other things to bring them more in line with the mod, such as the carry weight bonus of (non-enchantable) pouches and satchels.

Q: Does this add enchanted versions of the backpacks to the game? Jelidity's mod adds enchanted versions of the backpacks to the game.
A: Jelidity is a really good modder... This does not currently add enchanted versions of the backpacks to the game, because doing so for all the different backpack mods would be a lot of work. So for now, you will have to enchant backpacks yourself. But it's something I might consider adding.
