Permissions and credits
Enhanced Vanilla Trees (EVT) is a mod that aims to enhance the vanilla experience. Though vanilla enhancement is at the core of the mod, we also provide a variety with optional branch textures from Skyrim Flora Overhaul and alternative trees from Realistic Aspen Trees and SFO.

Skyrim LE version: Enhanced Vanilla Trees

  • Enhanced 'Vanilla' Trees (see below for how we do this)
  • 'Lush' option, which double the amount of branches on the pine trees
  • Large tree options that are 50% larger than vanilla trees
  • Custom Trees that have the lower, leafless branches removed from their trunks and alternative trunk textures to be more visually pleasing
  • Support for Realistic Aspen Trees built in
  • Support for Vurt's Snowy Pines Trees from SFO built in
  • Optional pine branch textures created by Vurt from SFO
  • Optional greener bark textures (only for Custom Trees options)
  • Support for ENBSeries/ReShade/Weather mods that increase ambient brightness via darker trunks
  • Pre-generated LODs for some options
  • Billboards for all options so users can generate their own LODs
  • Support for Hybrid 3D Trees using DynDOLOD

Through splitting the mesh and UV-remapping, the trunk texture is applied, vertically, around the tree trunk 2x to 3x more than vanilla. This results in less texture stretching, thus, allowing the texture detail to remain closer to its original quality. This technique does not result in any performance loss!

Besides having 2x to 3x the quality on all tree trunks, these higher polygon meshes also allow EVT to have more complex and detailed trunk shapes. Here is an illustration of the technique applied to the trunks:

As a side effect trees will have reduced branch animations. While the leaves on the trees are still animated, branch movement is not possible at this time. This is true for all tree mods that provide custom meshes. If this is an issue for you, do not use any mod that replaces tree meshes and stick to texture-only mods for trees. We might investigate in the future how to work around this limitation.

Here is a demonstration video of the animations that can be expected:

Mod Options

Enhanced Vanilla Trees SE:
This is the most vanilla-like replacement. Pre-generated LOD and LOD generation available.

Enhanced Vanilla Trees SE - Lush Trees:
The Lush options provide double the amount of branches for lusher trees. Pre-generated LOD and LOD generation available.

Enhanced Vanilla Trees SE - Lush Large Trees:
This is the same as the Lush option, but with 50% larger trees. Pre-generated LOD and LOD generation available

Enhanced Vanilla Trees SE - Custom Trees:
This option provides the lush branch, as well as, custom bark textures. Only LOD generation is available.

Enhanced Vanilla Trees SE - Custom Large Trees:
This is the same as the Custom option, but with 50% larger trees. Only LOD generation available.

Enhanced Vanilla Trees SE - Alternative Branch Textures:
Includes alternative, SFO-style branch textures for the pine trees. This file is optional. Only LOD generation available.

Enhanced Vanilla Trees SE - Alternative Trees:
Includes alternative 'Realistic Aspen Trees' style aspens and SFO-style snowy pine trees. This file is optional. Only LOD generation available.
  • A note about SFO Snowy Pine Trees:
  • The TreePineForestSnow01 tree has a large curved portion at the top. This makes it impossible to get a perfectly matching billboard for it. The best solution to this was to make the billboard as straight as possible. This reduces pop-in with this tree, however, it will always have some pop-in; depending on the angle the player is approaching it during cell load. Users should be aware of this when using 2D LODs. Bug reports about this tree will be ignored because it can't be fixed. It is the best it's going to get. Since the branches are rendered with 3D Trees, this isn't an issue; therefore, if SFO Snowy Pine Trees is used, I would recommend generating 3D Trees for the best experience.

Mod Managers
Only modern, updated mod managers are supported. This means the latest version of: Mod Organizer 2, Vortex, and Wrye Bash. Mod Organizer(1) and NMM are not.

  1. Install one Main File of choice. The FOMOD installer will guide you through the various options and automatically install all the files based on the options selected.
    • If installing the Optional Files, take note of your choices from the Main File as you will be required to duplicate some of them during the installation of the Optional Files.
    • If you want to generate your own tree LODs, install the Billboards option in the installer and see the "Generating LODs" article.
  • (optional) Install Alternative Branch Textures. Choose to overwrite or install it separately.
  • (optional) Install Alternative Trees. Choose to overwrite or install it separately.

    • Installation and removal during ongoing games is safe. You can try out different combinations as you like. Billboard users may need to regenerate LODs when doing this.

    • If you want to install this mod manually, good luck! We will not provide support for users who try this and run into problems.

    • When installing, make sure that no other mods overwrite the meshes, textures, or LODs from this mod. Unless, of course, you are an advanced user and know exactly what you are doing.

    • Sort with LOOT. In general it doesn't matter where the ESP is placed in the load order, as it mainly contains new paths to the new meshes. There shouldn't be any conflicts, except with mods that are incompatible to begin with.

    Mods with support built in

    Compatible Mods

DynDOLOD is supported for those wishing to customize their LODs. Install EVT and let EVT overwrite files from mods with conflicts.
3D Tree LOD generation is supported..

    • Enhanced Landscapes - install EVT after Enhanced Landscapes and let EVT overwrite file conflicts. Users will need to generate their own LODs.
    • Bent Pines - users will need to generate their own LODs.
    • Skyrim Is Windy - mod provides its own compatibility patch.
    • Grass/Landscape mods - EVT does not touch any grass or landscape textures so they're compatible.
    • Compatible with any textures that change the tree clutter. Overwrite EVT with these mods. We provide these textures for convenience.

    Semi-compatible Mods
    • Skyrim Flora Overhaul - incompatible out of the box. Users can use the updated meshes for the Vurt's SnowyPines option, being sure to grab the billboards for them from SFO. Users may also hide/delete the trees from SFO and only use the grasses.

    • Limited compatibility with texture mods for branches because EVT's 2D Billboards may not match. However, any texture for the branches will work with the EVT meshes without the need to adjust them. 3D Trees support any branch textures. Overwrite EVT with the new branch textures.

    Incompatible Mods
    • Incompatible with texture mods that change tree barks due to EVT's new meshes.
    • Textures from other mods will need to be made compatible with EVT's meshes.
    • EVT pre-generated LODs are incompatible with any other mod change vanilla trees or add new trees.
    • Incompatible with any mod that changes vanilla tree meshes.
    • Mods that add new trees are compatible, but users will need to generate their own tree LODs.

Because we have reduced animations, despite a higher polygon count, the 'Enhanced Vanilla Trees' option will have slightly better performance over vanilla trees. For the other trees there may be a small hit of 1-10  FPS. This is entirely, dependent on your system, the resolution you run at, how much headroom your system has per frame, and your VRAM.

Most of the impact on performance will be due to shadows because larger trees and trees with more branches will cast more shadows; both on the ground and on themselves. If you use more conservative settings, you might gain a few FPS back.

Try out what best fits your system. If one option seems too much for your mod list, try a lower one.
