How can a level 1 character simply glance in an NPC's pockets and know everything they're carrying? Shouldn't your character have to practice doing that? And how can your character do that while holding weapons, shield, or a torch? And how can they do that when standing DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE NPC, and the NPC doesn't even notice? If any of that seems odd or unimmersive, this mod is for you. Peekpocket introduces a new skill your character must learn before being able to peek inside NPCs' pockets. It is designed for a slower, more realistic playthrough.

  • Prevents pickpocketing unless out of line of sight (i.e. you must be BEHIND the NPC).
  • Prevents pickpocketing when holding any object like a weapon, shield, or torch. This includes readied spells.
  • Requires you to practice peekpocketing on 50 NPCs before you can pickpocket. This default of 50 can set to anything from 0 to 500 in the MCM. Note that you cannot try to peekpocket the same NPC twice since each NPC is tracked. On the positive side, your pickpocket skill will slowly increase as you practice on NPCs. By default, you have a 10% chance to increase your pickpocket skill on each peekpocket attempt (configurable from 0% to 100% in the MCM). If you'd rather be guaranteed a pickpocket skill every X peekpocket attempts, that is also configurable in the MCM. If you don't want any pickpocket skill gains, just turn these options to 0 (i.e. off) in the MCM.
  • Requires minimum skill levels in sneak, lockpicking, and speech before you can pickpocket. The minimum levels are calculated this way when the mod is installed:
  • Sneak Skill Minimum: Set to 20 at install time, but if your character already has 20 or more then 5 is added to the current skill level. This minimum sneak level is configurable in the MCM to anything from 0 to 100.
  • Lockpicking Skill Minimum: Set to 10 at install time, but if your character already has 10 or more then 2 is added to the current skill level. This minimum lockpicking level is configurable in the MCM to anything from 0 to 100.
  • Speech Skill Minimum: Set to 10 at install time, but if your character already has 10 or more then 2 is added to the current skill level. This minimum speech level is configurable in the MCM to anything from 0 to 100. Why include speech? Because speech is the ability to judge character, habits, and movement, all of which allow better pickpocketing. If you disagree you can just turn it off. :)
  • YOT (Your Own Thoughts) mode is available in the MCM.
  • VERBOSE mode is available in the MCM. See screenshots for examples.
  • You can DISABLE or ENABLE the entire peekpocket system at any time from the MCM.
  • You can EXCLUDE any NPC in the game from peekpocket, making them immediately pickpocket-able. To do that, just add the NPC's formid to the Peekpocket_NPC_Exclusions_FLM.ini file. See the example entries there.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you don't like having to learn to peekpocket before you can pickpocket, you can still install this mod, turn everything off in the MCM, and benefit from the first 2 features listed above (i.e. for better immersion, yes I used the 'i' word).

  • This mod does not touch the actual pickpocket ability, it only prevents it until certain conditions are met. So any mod that makes changes to the pickpocket ability is compatible (e.g. mods that make pickpocketing easier or more lucrative).
  • Compatible with SE and AE.
  • Compatible with perk overhauls (e.g. Ordinator and Vokrii).
  • Sneak Tools SE Edition: Use the supplied optional download for compatibility with Sneak Tools. In order to provide this compatibility I had to remove the restriction of having empty hands when trying to pickpocket, otherwise you wouldn't be able to knock out or assassinate NPCs when sneaking. I also exclude sleeping NPCs so you can perform kill moves on them or pickpocket them. I've tried to catch all the different weapon, sneak, and target situations to provide the most informative messages for each situation. Hopefully I got them all right. Consider this a solid beta release. Note that I did not touch or change any asset or feature in Sneak Tools to achieve this compatibility.
  • Pickpocket Everyone - Steal from Any Creature: Use the optional patch in the downloads. Yes, you can now pickpocket chickens, but with my patch you can't do it when standing in front of them. Chickens hate that.
  • You Can Pickpocket Children: Use the optional patch in the downloads.
  • Apprentice: Use the patch in the miscellaneous downloads. This patch removes the training requirement for pickpocket in Apprentice and uses only the pickpocket requirements in Peekpocket. All the other requirements in Apprentice are untouched.

A single script runs just once each time you fail to peekpocket, so it doesn't have an adverse effect on your script load. But in very busy cities with lots of scripts running the notifications may be delayed a second or two.

Thanks to AndrealphusVIII who helped me understand the best way to implement this, and for sending me a sample perk.
