About this mod

A sandbox addon for the civil war, giving it more excitement, and a new way to advance civil war events by doing sieges and duties instead of the vanilla quests. Adds some fun without the heavyweight complexity of other CW mods, while usually safely running alongside them--Live the soldiers life!

The Soldiers Life. . .

The primary goal of CWRS is to create an environment where you can base your whole game around the Civil War, living the immersive life of a soldier. It will also sidestep a lot of the vanilla quests for those that have played the story part and don't care to see it again, and just want to get right into the fun, while keeping full functionality intact.

With the 2024 installment there is full Stormcloak implementation brought into the new system that was introduced in 2021. Also, no more Jagged Crown, no more Message to Whiterun, or any of the individual hold quests that lead to the next vanilla fort battle: You will be thrown right into the fort adventures from the start, and they will pull the strings that manage events bringing you up to The Battle of Whiterun right up to the final Battle of Solitude or Windhelm and everything in between. You will now see a full integration and enhancement of all loose CWRS events to create a truly fort-centric and siege-centric sandbox experience which now run the progression through the Civil War. These objectives will also take you into random vanilla dungeons you may not have explored or may have forgotten, along with an elaborate recruit system to aid in your adventures. Tons of sandboxy goodness, much of which already existed in game, with the CWRS programming tapping into it, delving into Skyrims untapped potential.

Loads of fun with Skyrim Unbound, Death Alternative and a lot of the survival mods, so consider using those too. They enhance the experience.
Also, The old 2016 version of the mod will always remain in place. This version does absolutely nothing to anything in the base game, and is the least intrusive and most compatible with anything else out there. It is not without flaws, but it is the mod in its most raw form that saw thousands of downloads over the years.

Key Feature Quests and Objectives

'The War comes to Whiterun'
An introductory quest that allows you to choose which side you will take in the conflict, prior to The Battle of Whiterun. This is the replacer for the CW introduction quests, Message to Whiterun, and The Jagged Crown, executed in a simple, easy, straightforward manner. No running around or fetching, just straight to the action.

'Recurring Sieges'
The central and simple event that started it all in 2014, which was once the only event in the mod at the start. On a random timespan of every 12 to 96 hours, a fort battle occurs at any one of the military forts involved in the civil war, regardless of which faction owns it, as the story indicates they are often under constant contest, so this brings that element of the background story to life. These battles are similar but not identical to the vanilla fort battle quests. There is an option to fast travel to one of these fights as soon as they begin, which is helpful if you're on a new game. These along with all the other events will contribute to advancing the civil war main quest. There is also a defensive siege mechanic integrated into this where enemy soldiers will periodically and randomly attack the fort you are visiting. This can happen during a main siege, or during the vanilla sieges as well to make things really exciting.

'Military Duties (seek and destroy)'
A recurring and ongoing objective where you check in with officers stationed at indicated forts to gain intel and locate secret targets of special interest and eliminate them; main purpose being to make your army look heroic to the masses, and to keep you engaged with fort activities and events. Each officer you talk to, and each target you eliminate will help progress the civil war, in addition to any fort battles fought along the way. This can take you to every dungeon in the game ultimately.

'Wayward Souls (recruiting system)'
This introduces itself upon completion of The Battle for Whiterun. Potential recruits appear randomly at inns. If they decline your invitation, or if they die or you dismiss them, another will respawn at any of the 20 inns in the world(including Solstheim). There are only ten(mage included) active in the world at a time. So the more there are in your party the less you will find. They behave similar to traditional followers, and up to 5 of your own followers may be enlisted as well. You may choose when they follow you, or you may automate their AI. Once recruited you may also direct them to report to headquarters to also advance civil war progress. Dozens of new NPC have been handcrafted for the recruit system and all CWRS events, which will be using some rarely seen assets, focused on a young and more vibrant 'cannon fodder' look for the faces of the civil war.

Instructions

-Most of the more elaborate directions are included in game, in the quest descriptions, so be sure to read them when unsure of something. 99% of all the content in this mod is self executing, and is scripted to run based on your interactions, without much conscious input at all. I have done that part for you in the coding.

-Be CERTAIN that CWRS.ESM is in your load order BEFORE USLEEP. Otherwise, the progression through the battle of Whiterun and the battle for Windhelm or Solitude will NOT initiate.

-If you use the old 2016 version be sure to remove all four of the new versions from your skyrim data folder. These will not install and overwrrite the new version without issues.

-Install into a game where you have not yet spoken to any military leaders or picked a side in the war, or ideally onto a new game entirely.

-Remove or be sure your old CWRS.ESP is overwritten by this file.

-If possible, put CWRSConscription.ESP before other Civil War mods in your load order. This should allow mods like CWO and others to overwrite some of my changes without breaking anything. My material is versatile and can adapt around many contingencies put in by other mods.

-Keep in mind that objectives may appear in Solstheim, and if they do, a map marker will not appear until you go to that region. So you will need to go there to see where it is. This is about the only instance of a map marker not appearing, unless it was intended to not appear.

--joshuathedork

“Really great mod mate I think its underrated around the 500 endorsements for a mod what deserves a thousand. also the part I like about this mod is that i don't need to start a new game to get some more play time in the civil war”
--dragonvsdemon123

“With this mod I can finally play through the civil war and not be bothered afterward by npcs talking about it as though it's still occurring, because it IS now”
--Nakoichi

“Excellent mod! Kind of RTS feeling and of course, heavy RPG.”
--TmaxInSkyrim

“Been wanting something that does this since the game came out. Really never felt like a war when I could end it in like 3 in-game days.”

Thank you everyone who has spoken and shared their experiences with CWRS. It is those of you who use it which actually define what it is and your commentary, negative or positive attribute to the direction it has taken. This was my ideal for side events on the civil war. I decided to add stuff on the side to make it fun without breaking the game--now it's your turn to add to and share that inspiration; please speak up, and share your images and adventures on the mod page. Thank you all for enjoying the experience of this mod with me.
