Indeed. This is a feature I have been looking into improving for mods in the future, making it more realistic. However, due to some technical challenges, I cannot say exactly how, when or where something like that would be implemented.
It's sad to see this mod has been inactive, it's a really great concept. I'd love a version for SE that is compatible with Morningstar - Minimalistic Races of Skyrim
In SSE, Skyrace reintroduces this swimming concept, along with race edits. Skyrace downloads are currently restricted though, because a few users reported experiencing CTDs when using the mod. It was a bit unclear to me exactly what had happened to them however, and whether their issue was universal to all users with the mod, or whether this was a more isolated issue. They have not yet responded to my most recent question, so nothing has changed since then.
If we for a moment ignore the aforementioned issue and just look at it from a compatibility perspective; based on Morningstar's description, it seems reasonable that Morningstar and Skyrace would be mostly compatible.
Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly but unfortunately I don't think I'd be able to use that mod as it would most likely be incompatible with 'Character Creation Overhaul'. Perhaps I'll give porting this mod for my own use a go and see what results I get.
Yes, individual configurations and adaptations are almost always the most reliable way to approach this matter, seeing how the sheer amount of possible mod combinations makes it impossible to take everything into account.
In regards to the Character Creation Overhaul mod you are mentioning, I had a look at its description. I am not entirely sure what they are referring to in the compatibility section when mentioning that racial starting skill bonuses could case issues. As far as I would assume though, it should not apply to Skyswim, since the changes of this mod come in the form of a new racial ability added to all playable races except for Argonians.
I noticed when swimming in an interior, Damphall Mine in Solstheim this does not seem to kick in. It does seem like something is trying to fire, as I randomly sink at times, but swimming is unimpeded.
I love the concept of this mod, Fr - thanks for putting it together. A couple questions:
1. I noticed your comment that this mod may cause problems with Requiem. Which problems did you anticipate? 2. Does the encumbrance effect take inventory items into account? For example, if I unequipped my armor and stored it in my pack, would I then be able to swim freely?
Thanks in advance for any replies, and again for the hard work.
I am very glad that you enjoy the mod. To be realistic however, this mod is probably the one that I personally am the least proud of, out of those I made. I originally had a more advanced idea when starting out, but quickly came to realize it had to be significantly changed in order to make it work at all. I am of course positively surprised that people download and enjoy using the mod, which is the reason for why I let it remain up on the site. But from my personal perspective, I've come to realize this mod is too "expensive" in terms of compatibility for what it is really worth.
To put it simply, Skyswim interferes with way too many unrelated parts of the game, just to make swimming a bit slower – which really is a very small feature in the grand scheme of things. I do not wish to sound unnecessarily negative when I say any of this; I just want to explain the reason for why I might not be too involved with this particular mod anymore. The compatibility issues affect basically all playable races (and thus making most race mods incompatible), causing mounted combat on land to stop working in melee, as well as any other potential issues caused by race mods.
To answer your questions; Requiem is a very complex mod that changes a lot of things in the game. As mentioned above, since Skyswim changes a lot of things in the game too, I am relatively confident that Skyswim and Requiem soon would run into compatibility issues on more than just a single occasion. This is not something I have actually tested for myself, but until proven otherwise, I will believe my assumption is plausible enough that I can rely on it.
Secondly, both yes and no. The encumbrance was supposed to be equally affected by all inventory items. Sadly, I never quite managed to get that part to work. Instead, all the mod really does now, is to take worn armour into account, making it many times heavier while swimming in water. Once you pass a certain weight threshold, you'll simply be encumbered the same way as when you're carrying any large amount of gear.
I hope this cleared up any confusion or questions you had regarding the mod. Again, it is still technically functional in the way that it works, and if things are working for you without complications with your current load order, I'm glad for that and hope you'll enjoy the mod.
Browsing through all your mods in the last few minutes, I have to congratulate you. I can't believe I've gone this long without any mods like these. So simple but brilliant. Keep it up.

Edit
I removed the sript for vampires with SSEdit, now there's no problems
