v2.0 includes a vanilla compatible mesh (2d chains) as default to make sure that my mod works correct because some mesh mods use incompatible meshes with their own texture paths. you will see vanilla 2d chains as standard setting!
if you like smim mesh (much better 3D chain) just copy the smim mesh file metalcage01.nif MANUALLY in the mesh folder of my mod and replace my standard vanilla mesh to be sure everything works including 3d chain. be sure my mod is not overwritten.
because of the importance of the load order you must do this if smim metalcage01.nif is overwritten by some other mod and you do not see my textures or the smim 3d chains.
it is no essential update if mod already works as it should but it was necessary because more and more mesh fixing mods are not vanilla/smim compatible and overwrite the smim mesh unintentionally corrupting my mod.
V2.01 chain fix if you use my vanilla mesh (50kb) with 2d chains instead of smim (2mb) wit 3d chain mesh.
you will never see my vanilla compatible high res textures if you use a mod with vanilla incompatible meshes or another file path ! use vanilla settings or compatible ones. all other solutions have to be done on your own risk and manually!
Thanks for your quick reply! Hmm, that's too bad I think.. There's almost nothing left of your mod this way, and that doesn't really match up with the first part of your sticky post, or does it?.. I have a LOT of texture mods, but pretty much none of them touch your files. SMIM only touches one imperial jail texture, but loads it with the plugin. If I were you, I'd just upload the full mod and don't care about other mods. Mods/retextures are personal and original, and these textures in particular aren't touched by many mods. I mean, everything's better than vanilla anyway lol
oh i don't think so. the most important textures and normals are still part of this package. if you like the full old stuff just download it in the old file section
Okay.. Oh well, I already just installed both 1.04 and 1.05 separately in sequence so I basically merged them. But is there any difference between 1.04 and 1.05 in terms of texture (quality) changes, or are the 1.05 textures the exact same as in 1.04?? I guess they're the same, since the file dates say they haven't been edited since 2016/17.
The metalcage01_n.dds in the folder textures\clutter\common\ is wrongly named into metalcage01_nx.dds so the game cant find the matching normal map for your retexture.
affirmative! deleted the wrong file in the uploaded 1.03 zip file. so renaming metalcage01_nx.dds to metalcage01_n.dds will be sufficient to update to v 1.04
i'm using smim 2.07. no problems so far. new meshes should bring finer object detail while doing no harm as long as they do not change the way textures are applied. if you encounter any problem, e.g. pink objects or badly applied textures, please let me know. some jail related stuff (metal fence)seems to be optimized with smim and looks very good with the new meshes. this does not conflict with my mod. the big metal cages seem not to be looking better than my ones but are a bit more grey and lesser rusty. my texture seems to be more detailed. so it is a matter of taste. the other stuff covered with my mod is not changed by smim 2.07.
Thanks for your reply. So it seems like another case of "pick-and-choose". Actually, I really like how the prisoner stuff looks since I've been using your mod so I guess I'll save myself the trouble and forego updating SMIM. Between us, I'm not a big fan of Brumbek's custom textures and it takes some time to sift through them and replace some of them each time a new SMIM update comes around...
Your mod has always had a higher priority than SMIM in my loadout. But SMIM uses an esp so it can bypass this "disadvantage" and still call its own meshes and textures (I'm not saying that it does, I haven't checked yet).
thanks for reply, I was getting Bethesda logo -> crash in the way a required dlc happens, but , it had nothing to do with this mod x) sorry for taking your time. I'm liking the stuff!
this is what I was looking for unfortunately the prison bars are impossible to fix (not the standalone cages, the prison bars connecting celing to floor), you need to modify nif, anyone who tried knows: u can put 8k on prison bars and the texture is stretched and looks like 512 or like in the images of OP. Look at image 4 prison doors. Also there is something wrong with it every time one tries to mod, hard to explain but it's like you poured gruel over it (both vanilla and modded), doesn't look rustic yet but somewhat blurred and with strange white layer (gruel) and too soft a surface. So it looks like a blurred soup with alternate pixels of red, black, white, nif change is the savior. I mean only impmetal01.dds ofc on other textures u can see the detail just fine. Confront picture 1 with 4 and everyone will know what I speak of.
I think this is related to: meshes\dungeons\imperial\jail\ diffuse: textures\dungeons\imperial\ImpMetal01.dds Normalmap: textures\dungeons\ships\ShipGoldenMetal01_n.dds
I will give endorsement because of dreamed of such mod long time, nobody ever did this yet
what you say is 100% true and thanks for endorsing! the streching nif is the problem and vanilla textures look horrible. but some of the textures are used for more than one nif and i think my high res textures are a very good compromise until someone takes the time to create unstreched nifs with a better result
Thanks - I love stuff that makes my game more beautiful to look at btw, there are some cages in Hob's Fall Cave that don't seem affected by this mod. Is my cell buffer playing tricks on me?
it depends on the mesh/texture which is used for that place. i will have a look. i found larina in a big metal prison here. this one is not covered so far and the vanilla texture is really ugly. thanks for the hint.
Yes, that must be the one. It's the destination of radiant quests (Dawnguard) where a master Vampire has taken a Dovah-friend hostage that needs to be rescued.
Wow, cool - thanks so much for the update. You're doing great work here for the benefit of all. With "similar" I'm hoping the one in Driftshade Refuge is included. I happened to come by there today, in the cellar, and it surely could use an update. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Driftshade_Refuge
yes, driftshade and most other prison cage stuff should be covered now. i hope you like the reworked textures. the problem (texture stretching) with this cage stuff is that the objects/meshes are huge in relation to the applied textures. it's the same as with some rock textures.
Righto. I'm seeing more and more improved cages as I travel through Skyrim, so I guess it's working Thanks!
However, the small cages that hang from ceilings on chains... there seems to be more than one model. There is one where the top (the round part) of the cage is painted white. I guess that's supposed to be snow. That could be done better (like, done by you ) imho. Would you be amenable to take a look? TIA!
thanks for feedback! i'm using some texture/snow overhauls covering the ugly plain snow problem so i have no idea where this kind of cages are. give me a name of a place where you discovered that and maybe i can find the mod (out of 400) which covers that for me.
EDIT: Here is an example from the Wreck of the Strident Squall (Dragonborn DLC). I look at them and go "Hmm... what is that white paint doing there?". That breaks my immersion, lol https://imgur.com/a/k7qDV
Also some of the chains look more like they are made of gold, rather than rusty iron. But that may just my ENB. I do believe they are from another mod though, possibly SMIM or ELFX. https://i.imgur.com/9OnhsrL.jpg
EDIT 2: Here is a better example for the "golden" chains. From the Telvanni Wizard's Tower on Solstheim https://i.imgur.com/wKinP3o.jpg
i cannot reproduce the color problem with the chain. maybe an enb or other color settings related problem. i didn't find the cages with a white crown so far
I already posted pictures in my (edited) post above (7:57, 22 Mar 2016). Here they are again, from the Wreck of the Strident Squall. https://imgur.com/a/k7qDV
Today I spotted a cage that is almost entirely white for no particular reason. It's right next to the chest at Tumbledown Tower, near Riften, just West of the Black Briar Lodge. https://imgur.com/a/H8lzC http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tumbledown_Tower:_Riften_Outskirts
strange. in the second pic it's clearly a mesh or texture error because it's a mesh my mod covers and no place even for another mod to apply this kind of white texture. i do not have such white cages at these places. they look perfectly the same as the textures in my mod. you may try to put my replacer at the very end in your mod load order and tell me if this error still exists. if this doesn't help it must be another mod what causes this problem or a problem with archive invalidation. if you are not sure simply uninstall/deactivate my mod and watch the result.
I see. That would be "mrkmetalcagea01.dds" then, correct? When I open the corresponding mesh "mrkmetalcage01.nif" in nifskope it shows up perfectly fine.
I have no other instances of that mesh on my system. And your mod is already among the last in my load order and MO shows no other mods overwriting it. So it must be a mod that has an esp and uses its own meshes and textures with unique names. Only I have no idea which mod that might be
in this case it could only be another mod/esp or achive invalidation/load order problem with an overwriting bsa replacing the standard meshes/textures. i unpacked all my bsa's to circumvent strange things like this because i had a comparable problem with some bsa files using mo. now i have full control over mod load order and i can identify overwriting textures/meshes of former bsa packages.
Your gold looking chains are glowing, but this was solved with SMIM some versions ago after i mentioned it to Brumbek. It was removed in Version 1.74 of SMIM. It could be another mod replacing this meshes and have not a updated version of them, or you use an older SMIM-version.
Strange thing with your cages lol I dont have this problem, could it be a mod like Ash-Rocks for Solstheim changing some meshes to have "better" ash on them like the Better Dynamic Snow mod ?
@ Hallodria ok i forgot to mention for the test: put smim and my mod @ the end of the load order! this should solve your problem. the mod with faulty/oudated meshes should be one of the mods with bsa packages. you may test that by deactivating them temporaryly.
if you plan to buy a hard disc i recommend evo 850. runs like hell
In case anyone cares, I finally found the culprit. I was using an outdated version of Skyrim Ice Shader Fix which is an optional bonus add-on for the brilliant Skyrim Particle Patch for ENB mod. The current version of the Ice Shader Fix does not cause this problem.
it should because it's just a texture replacer but i don't know because i play modded standard version. i would apprechiate if someone could test and give me a feedback on that. i'm waiting for a stable skse64 before testing sse

@ xrayy - so the renaming of that file is the only change over v1.03?
Any clue on how this will - or won't - work with this mod?

Did you look in the cargo hold of the Strident Squall (Solstheim)?
I see those cages everywhere, even in mods that add an entire new worldspace.

@Penetrator - right, that thought had occurred to me, too - that it's meant to be ash, rather than snow. I use SMIM v1.89 btw.
I'll try moving SMIM more towards the end of my load order. I guess that's safe to do at any rate.
