About this mod

Lower health, weaker weapons, more expensive shops, or the opposite.

Permissions and credits
Mods to adjust the overall difficulty of the game up or down. Die faster, get weaker weapons and pay more at shops, or the opposite.

Notes (mostly for hard & brutal)
  • For safety you may want to backup your save file before using this mod. However in general there should not be any problem. Your save game is in AppData\Local\Returnal.
  • Balanced around playing through each biome without shortcuts. If you use shortcuts it might be much more difficult.
  • The enemy, boss and hazard mechanics aren't modified and doing so would be much more difficult. So for someone quite experienced with the game they may still be able to beat a harder mode first try without dying.
  • While the mods are balanced for the main game, the tower is also affected in the same way (except maximum proficiency level).
  • There are mod variants that limit the number of traits on weapons to 1. This should remove OP weapons and could make choices more impactful, but may also make weapons less interesting.
  • Weapon damage output is not directly modified. A trainer could do it if you feel enemies are still dying too quickly.
  • Your starting max health is always specified as 100% in-game, but the health bar will be smaller/larger. Your health values are relative to this.
  • Probably not compatible with any other mods that affect player stats, proficiency, items, shops, etc.

Installation

Choose one of:
  • Easy mode
  • Hard mode
  • Hard mode and weapons can only have 1 trait
  • Brutal mode
  • Brutal mode and weapons can only have 1 trait

Put the desired mod file in Returnal\Content\Paks\~mods\

Easy mode
  • +33% starting health
  • +40% healing and max integrity gain
  • +28% proficiency gain
  • -20% shop prices
  • Maximum proficiency levels 20 & 40
  • Absolute maximum integrity attainable is unchanged (I found no way to change it in the pak files)
  • Probably still not super easy because the mechanics are unchanged. If this doesn't work for you, you could try a trainer.

Hard mode

  • -33% starting health
  • -40% healing and max integrity gain
  • -28% proficiency gain
  • +20% shop prices
  • Maximum proficiency levels 12 & 24

Brutal mode

  • -50% starting health
  • -60% healing and max integrity gain
  • -41% proficiency gain
  • +40% shop prices
  • Maximum proficiency levels 10 & 20

Hard more & Brutal mode changes
  • Level 2 traits at level 14, level 3 traits at level 26. If you are lower level than this, they could mostly drop from elites and highly malignant chests, rarely anywhere else.
  • Removed "Resin Enhancer" artefact from the game which would reduce resins required to upgrade integrity from 3 to 2
  • You can have up to 3 malfunctions instead of 2
  • Watch towers are more dangerous if you get caught
  • 200% ether cost for cleansing malignant items
  • An optional file increases the cost of reconstructors from 6 to 12
