Use OpenIV to extract the files as .xml
edit them and change the .xml extension to .ymt and you're good.

Im in the Same Boat as Jimmyiscao

Still new to modding, I finally Got some of the basics down as to which program to use when and where, but I'm completely lost as to where we can find the Directory of horsefiles and how they should be edited.

So far I've made a complete mod overhaul on bodt Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, and most other RDR 2 mods dont present a problem, but something as simple as switching the paint on my damn horse completely stumps me and after 2 hrs of searching I've found ZERO guides to help a newbe Modder.

OpenIV has a search function, you can search using term 'a_c_horse_' and that'll help you locate where the horse files are. It should be in metapeds.rpf inside one of the update.rpf files.

I am fairly certain one of the mods here on the nexus had a detailed description on how to change horse colors and parts in the mod description\comments. I don't remember which mod but it was a mod that had custom horse coats.

Okay, here's a step-by-step way of doing this for anyone still having problems with this.

First of all, you need to have Lenny's Mod Loader installed (which you already should have for this mod). Create a folder inside LML (in RDR2 root folder) called 'Test' (only temporary; deleting it later). Copy whichever one of the .ymt files you want to edit into this folder. Download OpenIV (if you haven't already got it). In OpenIV, navigate to the LML folder and then the 'Test' folder. Double click the .ymt file. It will open it up in a text editor and it will now be completely readable. In the top right of the text editor, click the 'export' button. Export as a text file to a location of your choice. Go to this location and open the text file. It will now be readable.

Inside the text file, click 'edit' and search for 'scale'. It will bring you to the section of the file where the horse size (scale) is. Shires are 1.14750000 in scale. Thoroughbreds are 1.08125000.

Make whatever changes you want. Save the file. Select it and press F2 (or click on it twice) to edit it. Change it from .txt to .ymt. Close OpenIV. Navigate to your LML in the RDR2 root (not inside OpenIV). Delete the test folder. Go back to where you saved the exported file and copy/cut it. Paste it into the 'Stream' folder in LML in the RDR2 root.

      You're done.

after exporting it as .txt i can only export it as .txt again or .html files. How do you export yours to .ymt?

There's no way to convert it back to ymt. Change the extension to ymt instead (rename it from .txt to .ymt) and LML can read it as it is.

Thanks a ton for the detailed instructions mate !

Question though, since these are story mode horses and not online coats, do we need ASI loader for the mod to work ? The mod description says it needs either rampage or LML. After editing the files do I need to install ASI and Scripthook for the mod to run ?

Apologies if the questions were dumb. I'm kinda new to modding so a bit of help would be nice :)

In order to run Rampage or LML you definitely need Script Hook & ASI Loader. An ASI Loader already comes with Scripthook (dinput8.dll) so that should be all you need. If dinput8.dll doesn't work for you or you want online content then replace it with version.dll here

Converting txt to ymt worked fine, but when I put it in the stream folder, the game crashed on the loading screen.
I wanted to change americanstandardbred_black to the size of Bigger turkoman...
I guess this method won't work in 2025.
Anyway, I'm having fun playing thanks to the mod you made. Thank you.

    Doesn't work.

I place the mod in lml/stream/ folder.

Im not surprised, the instruction is weird, why do we have to create a "stream" folder when all other mods just has to be placed in the lml folder ?

Can someone is able to say CLEARLY where we have to place this mod please ?

Put the ymt files you want directly into the stream folder you created. If it doesn't work look for a file called lml.ini in the game directory, open it and make sure that 'DisableStreamFolder' is set to 'False'

Oh and make sure you don't have RedDeadTrainer installed.

Is there a way to merge this mod with Online Turkoman Horses? I'm trying to replace the silver Turkoman with the black online version and have the larger sized horse. I'm also running into an issue trying to edit the ymt file. I changed the extension to txt but the file has a bunch of special characters.

Download the "Bigger Online Horses" file here, rename 'a_c_horse_turkoman_black.ymt' to 'a_c_horse_turkoman_silver.ymt'

Love the mod, but I want to add a custom horse coat as well. I can't because Bigger Horses and Horse Coats use the same file. Is there any way I can have both a horse coat as well as bigger horses?

Ignore my mod, install the coat mod that you like, open the horse file in a text editor, search for scale, you'll see a number next to it like '0.99...' change to to a value you like for example: "1.0300.."

Im having this issue aswell. When i open the file to change the scale number the entire file is in chinese and gibberish so i cant even find anything that refers to scale in the file.

I'm using "Massive Arabians" and it's awesome, however, the Red Chestnut isn't scaling up like the black or white version. I opened the .ymt for the black and chestnut, compared, and all looks good - they are scaled the same in both files and should look the same size in game. For whatever reason, the Red chestnut is small like the original. I don't have any other mods running except for the restricted area sniper, so I have no idea what the issue is...?

Also - if you stable the red chestnut the stable map icon will show the quantity change but once you enter any of the stables the red chestnut isn't listed or seen in the stable. The red chestnut is retrievable at the horse post in camp (still small though)

SOLVED: I use the "Special Horses in Wilderness" mod to spawn the Red Chestnut Arabian which remained small no matter what I tried even though I removed the mod immediately after I got the Red Chestnut. On a hunch I looked for and found the Red Chestnut in it's natural spawn location next to Owanjila Lake, and yes it larger. So it seems the unnatural spawns somehow conflict with the Bigger Horses mod.

Thanks so much for your hard work! The original size of the arabians was laughable, this mod was badly needed ;)

It's not so much a conflict, but It's more likely that the mod you're referring to is adding the online version of the Red Chestnut to the spawn, there are actually 2 different red Chestnut Arabian horses in the game,

This mod doesnt seen to be working for me. I created a folder inside the lml folder called "stream" and I put "massive shire" and the "bigger turkoman" folder inside and when I go ingame they look the same. I dont think any of the other mods I have installed might conflict with this, but how can I check if they use the same horse files? I dont think thats the problem though because the other mods im using arent horse related. Any help would be appreciated.

      1) Try it like it the installation instruction, copy the files -not the folder, the .ymt files- into lml\stream.

      2) Open lml.ini which should be in the game directory and make sure that DisableStreamFolder is false.

      3) Make sure you don't have Red Dead Trainer installed.

Thank you so much for your mod, it is really wonderful and I really appreciate see the proper size for the arabians <3

I hate to be a bother but if you have time sometime, please could you add the red chestnut (non pc version, the one with white socks)...? it basically my favorite horse in the all game and I would love to be able to play with it without have to edit his scale EVERYTIME I log in the game...

ps: never mind... just found out that is in the online horses files! Sooo sorry, (I really did not know it was a online coat)

all good now and thank you one more time for your work!

Whenever I try adding this to the lml folder, there's no "stream" file and when I make a folder named "stream" and try to put this mod into it, it doesn't appear on the mod manager (using lennys mod loader)

It won't appear in the mod manager, if you copied the files there, you're done.

Hi! this may be a dumb question, but are these sizes accurate to horse sizes in real life? Because i'm using the Tennessee Walker one and i heard that they are medium sized horses, so the og size seemed a bit on the smaller side, however this makes them huge to me. not sure if it's size with this mod is accurate or not. if not its all good, still love the mod. was just curious :)

I have no clue about real horses, I've never seen any of these breeds in real life before. That being said make sure at least that you don't have a trainer that might be messing with horse size without you knowing.
