I always thought that your average human (let alone a astronaut settling an uncharterd planet) is capable of setting limits for manufacturing, running from enviromental danger and contacting ships without need for a whole building to exist. You can imagine the colonists have tablets/notebooks with them to do these things, if that breaks immersion.
