About this mod

Displays English and Japanese text in speech balloons and narrations. There's also an optional mod that includes NPCs' info (via path action), journal entries, "Hear a Tale" section in the tavern, and banter titles.

This mod only works when the text language is set to English. While the optional mod includes extra stuff mentioned in the overview above, be aware that there are issues such as overlapping and/or hard-to-read text (especially in the journal). Please refer to the images to see what these issues look like.


Notes about the different versions :

There are four versions of this mod, each has slight differences in its font. Here's a brief description of each version (you can also read the descriptions as they're included as the caption on some of the images) : 

  • The first version uses a modified font for Japanese characters, especially hiragana and katakana. Though most of the kanji are from the original font used in the Japanese text language of the game, some of the kanji had been modified (notably 心 and 女)
  • The second version has modified hiragana and katakana, but all of the kanji are from the original font used in the Japanese text language.
  • The third version has all of the kanji and hiragana & katakana from the original font used in the Japanese text language.
  • The fourth version uses IBM Plex Sans JP (Regular style) font for the Japanese text. Since all the kanji and kana are from this font, this version shouldn't have the issue of inconsistent thickness of some kanji (like in the first version). This is a sorta experimental thing, so there might be issues in the Latin alphabet or common symbols.




How to install :
Place dual_sub_EN_JP_p (and/or dual_sub_EN_JP_gametext_p) pak file in the Paks folder.
(example : C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Octopath_Traveler2\Octopath_Traveler2\Content\Paks)

To uninstall the mod, simply delete the mod file(s) in the Paks folder.


Possible issues :
Gonna be completely honest, this mod is super unpolished because I haven't even played an hour of this game (as of September 4, 2024). I've pretty much started working on this mod immediately after downloading the game, even though I haven't played a minute of the actual game yet. What made me decide to upload the mod (despite minimal testing) is because I noticed that the speech balloons' positions depend on the number of lines in the character's dialogue. You can see this right away in Ochette chapter 1, when Juvah's speech balloons sometimes appear above or below him, depending on the number of lines in his dialogue.

Thanks to this new behaviour of speech balloons, I feel pretty confident that there (hopefully) won't be a lot of cut-off balloons at the top or bottom of the screen (like in Octopath 1). My optimism could be short-lived though, lol. Feel free to send me screenshots of cut-off balloons, and I'll fix the issues.

1. (For the main mod) TalkData_EN.uasset/uexp, and these ufont files : KS_Skech_Default, KS_Skech_Default_02, KS_Skech_B, KS_Skech_B_02, KS_Skech_I, KS_Skech_I_02, MJ_KR_YoonGothicPro770 (not sure why the musical symbol ♪ used in both English and Japanese text language is taken from the Korean font)

2. (For the optional mod) GameTextEN.uasset/uexp

This mod is incompatible with other mods which use the same files.


Optional files :

1. A .txt file (English_Japanese_subs) containing the English and Japanese text extracted from TalkData_EN and TalkData_JA files.

2. A .txt file (GameText_EN_JP_subs) containing the English and Japanese text extracted from GameTextEN and GameTextJA files.
