My mod already has white textures for the unopened icons, but they show up at the bottom.
As for the original mechanic, when open locations had brown color and not found white color - it was redone in Remastered to have the brown icon reduced in transparency if you didn't open it.
I don't have the skills to edit Unreal Engine scripts to bring back the previous logic to work. If someone uses my textures to bring back the previous mechanics - I'll be glad to share.
I think I have a pretty good idea what the cause might be. It seems that the enemy icon on the map is in the same texture to the right of the rest of the main map icons. Therefore, the author of that mod disabled the icons of enemies not by script, but by erasing them on the texture, the game logic still shows them only there are now transparent pixels. I'll try to make a patch. While you can look for a similar mod for the lack of enemy icons, but which changes the logic and not textures.
I don't understand English very well, because it's not my native language, so I'll give a comprehensive answer.
The icon mod is compatible with the mod you sent me via the link.
The mod I'll publish for the classic map colors will have a 4k version. But just like with this High Quality 4K World Map 4k mod - it's not real 4k, it's still bad quality 2k, just with better sharpness through cheap upscalers. In order for the map to really look better and add detail, it needs to be redrawn manually, or you need to spend a long time fiddling with full-fledged 8,12,18 gb Stable DIffusion upscalers like "Supir". Most of 4k upscales is made by 200 mb upscaler, so it haven't enough info to draw, it can only sharp image, and image become looks cartoonish and glitchy.
If you want me to make icons of better resolution in 4k, then I won't do it. I'll explain the reason. In the game, they are already of a fairly high resolution. If you zoom in on the map to the maximum (or just look screenshots above), you'll see that they are quite detailed. The problem is that when you look at the map zoom out from a distance, these textures have blurry mipmaps turned on and even if the texture is in 8k or 16k or 32k, it will still be rendered at 64x64 pixels from a distance. This is already a problem with the Unreal Engine settings, without the mod - you can see that the remaster icons also look blurry but they good enough in original scale.
Also, since I can't draw well with a pen in Photoshop to make a vector icon from scratch, I don't want to turn what game already have into a non-detailed neural mess.
My experience with this mod is great but... My spells I use to cast buffs on myself they do not show on my ui for some reason. When I uninstalled this mod I can see my buffs again on my ui. Just letting you know.
Actually i don't want be the man who degrade graphics, so i use remastered version of icons to change them. I think that the original vision of single-color icons was more meaningful from a design point of view.
Hahaha, I've been refreshing the mod page constantly, I love finding new mods that restore the classic oblivion look, so I was really excited to get this one installed and load it up for testing. Looking forward to the map background mod as well :)

Just one issue, could you also update markers (icons) on radar by similar logic?

You don't need install or have original mod. It will not work with mine. Just download and install optional mod version on classic icon page.

Thank you for your question.

Screenshot with the mod. What status icons are we talking about? Not the ones on the bottom left?
I didn't expect that someone would manage to install the mod after just a couple of minutes of publication.
