Neeshka sometimes unequips her weapon & armor and causes CTDs at random on cell transitions :-(

I have a similar issue after playing Oblivion on new OS, but I not sure that it is. I'm also running xOBSE.

She wants to un-equips her weapon & armor in my game, but that doesn't seem to cause the CTD

I only having this CTD issue when I give her steel plate armor that has been upgraded from the mod "Skyrim for Oblivion Crafting" and to be more specific when upgrading the armor to the superior set atm. It might be an issue when using armor from a mod.

I made her into a quest item in the CS and will see if that fixes the issue.

It seems the CTDs are related to her wearing an open face helmet and going to different cells. I ran around with her armored and unarmored, fast travel with her in her default armor, steel armor and a dwarven armor with helmet. As soon as I gave a open face steel helm the CTD started. I tested again this time giving her a glass helm at it caused the CTD when going to a different cell. I still had the issue with her un-equipping gear.

Making her into a quest item did not stop these issues BTW

I found an ingame solution for the CTD in cell transitions. Give her a non armor clothing hood if you have also given her an open face helmet for some reason it works at least for me it has. I can't explain why this works. After I found this worked I got rid of her non vanilla Ren hair and gave her a vanilla hair-do and removed the hood. That did not work so I gave her the hood again which solved the issue. My guess it has something to do her race with starting with a number (1ncmRace) or something in the scripting

The Hood was a great Strategy!  I was using Elven Gear for Neeshka. All Gear being enchanted.  Elven Head gear is open faced, after 4 hours of researching (Hard to beleive this bug has been arround for 4 year on some boards, all pointing to EngineBugFix; That we all must have sadly).
I used Type ~,  (once in Console ) The Type, ( Player.additem 00064FE3 1 )   = Black Hood, no weight, no cost. I then Gave item to Neeshka, Saved. Waited 1 min.  Then exited, loaded MO2 back up, reload Last manual Save.  The following occurred.
      1. After two zones, waited 30 secs after each zone, then manual save.   (Manual Save; Save through Console)
      2. No more/ limited crashes
      3. Kept her gear on more often!

Huge Shout out, and Big Thanks to ElderScrollsFan001.      A hoody of all things!

Cool glad to hear it works for someone else.

I'm still not good a scripting, but I think I've narrowed it to a conflict with EngineBugFix and the way her double face bug script is written in her main scripting. However it just a guess based on a lot of observation in game.

GBRPlussCFS (CrashFreeSetup) at Oblivion Nexus - mods and community (nexusmods.com)

has a tweaked EngineBugFixes.ini file here. I think he disabled some of the problematic and outdated features for xObse. Might help with the crashes.

Gonna try giving Neeshka a hood as well btw. Thanks for the tip. I hope she'll stop stripping off her armor xD

I tried the tweaked EngineBugFixes.ini ,which has improved the performance of my game :) but it didn't fix Neeshka issue
There was change though if you give her an open face helm and a hood when she transfers to another cell she will switch to normal clothes, but she will still be wearing the open faced helmet.

ok I got brave and modified her script and delete every reference to face fix and double face fix....and it works.

It stopped the CTDs and stopped her from changing from her armor to clothes when going to different cells and she can ware open face helmets again with out the hood trick.

The only thing she dose now is when you running on open ground and you get to the distance it triggers her to move to player script she will change to clothes, but that ok as it doesn't CTD any more.

Looking a the permissions under the read me I can upload the fixed esp I'm just doing a little more testing.

I also want to solve one minor issue with her move to player script that causes her change to clothes. I will upload it any way as that just minor issue.

You people should stop bitching and complaining, I had Neeshka [Makeover] for twelve years and there is nothing wrong with her standalone functions. She is a wonderful twit follower who spends most of the time unconscious with Vilja in the Bloating Float from Jim Barf fight mod.

I like Neeshka, but she has some serious downsides that make playing the game with her very inconvenient:

    1. When I first met her in the Bloated Float she wasn't wearing her Huntsman Vest, preferring for some reason to be in her bra in the public LOL. So I had to give her other casual clothes and take her Huntsman outfit to fix it. Moreover, the whole system of changing her fighting gear and casual clothes seems to be buggy: she changes them periodically for no reason, despite I told her to use armor (or clothes). The same thing is regarding her melee or ranged weapon choice. So it happened a couple of times that when the fight started she stormed at the enemy in her casual clothes and mere bare hands LOL.
    2. She is definitely not for the thief character types as she is going to turn you to the guards for your mere attempt to lockpick an unowned chest, jeez.
    3. Even when she is told to wait at the place (regardless the gear she is told to wear) she walks away all over the area, but at least I'm able to find her later thanks to the quest marker on the compass. Although the need to run over the place in order to find her is annoying.

So far I've found these inconveniencies, but I'm already considering to uninstall the mod, at least until somebody fixes all of this.

Do you use mod EngineBugFixes? I think the inventory issue she has is because of some sort of conflict the inventory fix that's in EngineBugFixes. Her scripts might need to updated to fix the issue if that is the case.

      @ElderScrollsFan001

Yes, I use EngineBugFixes mod. If the inventory issue is an incompatibility issue with this essential Oblivion mod then we are in a sad state indeed: I'm not going to refuse using an essential Oblivion mod and I'm afraid that the author abandonned the mod long ago and won't update it ever.

It's only speculation on my part as I had some Cm Partners I made which I assigned some custom the AI Packages not to use weapon and armors. They did the same thing Neeshka dose at random on cell transitions minus the CTD issues when I started using EBFs.

I don't have the issue with the huntsman vest though.  I agree she not worth uninstalling EngineBugFixes and I hope someone can fix her. My in game solution for the CTDs dose make her more useful if you keep her in your game. Assuming it works in other folks game.

Well, good luck to you in bugfixing it! But honestly to say maybe it's not worth it, as I'm sure there are plenty of modern companion mods here on Nexus without such bugs and with companion behavior similar to Skyrim's companions. I hope your CM Partners companion mods would be bug-free and so advanced as Skyrim's, no less!

I was wondering if anyone has experience with the bug that prevents companions like Neeshka from actually taking an arrow from their quiver when shooting a bow. They just pull and release their weapon string without an ammo, even if set on ranged mode.

Greetings, thank you for your kind answer!

I have EngineBugFixes installed, along with other stability mods such as Oblivion Stutter Remover, Oblivion Display Tweaks and the Unofficial Patch too. My mod list isn't very long, but I made sure to include all of these fixes.

In addition, EngineBugFixes' effect can clearly be seen on Nesshka: she unequips her combat gear from time to time, and attacks with bare fists. But this has been discussed earlier in this post and it's not a big deal for me as I just gave her enchanted clothes (so that I don't need to repair her armor). I then gave her a durable daedric weapon and when I see she hasn't it on her back or on her waist I just tell her to equip her weapons again.

Going back to the arrows issue, here's what's written on Vilja's readme:

"Vilja, like all NPCs and companions, is affected by an Oblivion bug which makes her forget to use arrows when firing a bow. You can cast the Vilja Summon spell to give her instructions during  combat. If you have her switch to melee and then back to ranged fighting it will usually (but not always) make her start using arrows again."

In my case Vilja almost always forgets to use arrows and generally never start using them again when asked to change fighting mode.
I'm sure this is the same bug that happens too with companions like Neeshka and Fergus, but then I cannot restrain myself from wondering how non companion NPCs (like bandits) and even creatures (like goblins) do use their arrows correctly indeed.
Various archers added by the famous "Knights Of The Nine: Revelation" mod, in addition, use their arrows as well, and transform any enemy into an edgehog on sight!

There one more you can try Blue's Engine Fixes. It work along side EngineBugFixes I've noticed it having an effect on the the archery that Companions use as they seem to use bow more that I remember that in past play through's. It doesn't fix issues with Neeshka. If you set bInstallInventoryFix to 0 in EngineBugFixes it stops Neeshka issues but may cause ctd's when coming across enemies.

Thank you for your suggestion. I admit I already have Blue's Engine Fixes, a truly nice addition indeed, however it doesn't seem to have any effect on that odd arrows behaviour.
I will try, by the way, to set "bInstallInventoryFix" to 0 so to check if that's the cause of the bug I'm experiencing (beside of other issues with Neeshka's inventory reported here). I admit that I've my doubts as Vilja and Fergus, more recently released and updated companions, don't have any issue with their equipements, but they still share with Neeshka this odd bug with their arrows and, as said, all of them don't take any arrow from their quiver when shooting.
By chance, do you have any experience with CM partners? Maybe some archers? I was wondering if they have too this issue with their arrows.
As mentioned, Revelation's archers shoot their ammo perfectly, so I guess it's a bug proper of certain companions, maybe the ones who allow access to their inventory?

Well I can report that disabling bInstallInventoryFix did not work apparently it only works on widow vista or she works better on the older os. I was playing older games and modding on that computer for the longest time till I got a new computer recently.

As for CM partners I do run with a few as well. The characters that are dedicated archers work well but there arrows never count down. You can give them 5 arrows and they never run out, but I think that is the case with any companions. Also and this is for any follower if the are archers they fight better with short sword and daggers.

As the the bow sting issue it reminds me of one time when I started seeing this issue and it was related the the Abomb bug in save games

Also known as the Glitch of Doom you might be able to fix this with Wrye Bash or Animation Fixer

In Knights of the Nine Revelation it is possible there scripts in the mod that deals various game buggs for the npc's in that mod.

Thank you so much for sharing all of your experiences. Unfortunately there's not much on the web concerning this bug that involves arrows, even if it's mentioned both in Vilja and (if I recall correctly) Fergus readme files.

By the way, I usually reset the Abomb counter with Wrye Bash, and I never let it exceed the critical percentage on my saves. Do you think the other fix does a better job than Wrye?

Also, while I don't use XP or Vista, I still use Windows 7, however this bug is into Vilja's readme since, I guess, Vista was still used, as it's from many years ago, so it may not be the OS.

I wonder if it could be related to which weapon an npc starts with, or how his skills are initially configured. Companions like Neeshka have their skills dynamically set, both in regard to player level and also by the choosen fighting stance (not in the case of Fergus as he is always ranged oriented, skill wise).
Lastly it could be the AI package. A vanilla archer probably starts with that combat package while a customizable companion may have scripts which change this according to repeatable dialogue choices. Maybe in this change something goes wrong with the arrows.

Last thing that came to my mind is another fix included in Engine Bug Fixes which is related to arrows. I should give it a try.
Or maybe a few optimization and performance ini tweaks involving havok and background loading.

Animation Fixer is good I'm not sure if it is better than Wrye Bash. I only had reported issues with Neeshka after using widow 8.1

I'm out of suggestion atm for the arrow issue wish I could help more :(
It might be good to bring the arrow bug up on EngineBugFixes page or Blue's Engine Fixes nexus pages they might be able to come up with a fix

As a follower, Neeshka is my favorite Twit! There is a Corean Make over that gives her an Asian look. If you don't want the Idkrr npcs that come with the Corean mod, just change the name and or sex of these  no-name characters.

I think there should be a Morrowind version of this Follower to back up the her story, perhaps even a Skyrim descendant?

For anyone who has noticed flicker on Spirit's saddle, it's because the horse is set up to use both a saddle and saddlebags, but the saddlebag mesh already has the saddle part built in, so there will be z-fighting.

To fix it, just remove the saddle in the list of model parts for Spirit in either the Construction Set or TES4Edit, and Neeshka will have a happy, flicker-free horse.
