I finished both of the games so let me explain. (SPOILERS AHEAD!)
Angael was the first owner of the buster sword. His Father made it for him as a gift for leaving home to go fight for SOLDIER. Angael figured out what was happening to him (slowly becoming a monster) and transformed into a monster when Zack and him were (if I'm not correct) in the mountains. Zack killed him in defense and Angeal gave him the Buster Sword. Zack went into depression having killed his own mentor and friend and after a while got over it. Later on when they (Cloud and Zack) were being exposed to the Mako they escaped and attempted to hitch a ride back to the Shin-Ra Corps, they were attacked by the entire Shin-Ra Army. Zack fighting the soldiers tried to remember the most important people in his life and how they influnced him, faded away as he protected Cloud. Even the love of his life, Aeris faded away for his friend. He eventually got wounded. After everyone but three soldiers were killed, Zack still clinging the buster sword in his hand(and wounded), fought the soldiers with his last dieing breath. He remembered Aeris and all the memories he had with her, even her saying "I'll meet you on the other side" faded away. He then got shot in the head. Cloud ran up to him and with Zack's last bit of energy he held up the sword to him. He then took it from him and later on in Advent Children he put the Buster Sword on the same place he died as a memorial to him. The wolf that you see in the movie is apprently a representation of Zack's spirit, (the Wolf represents Honor and Bravery, the two things Zack lived by after Angeals Death. That's the story of the Buster Sword.
Erm...casegood? Zack was never slain by Sephiroth, he was slain by the Shinra Army...And after Zack's death, Cloud thought he was Zack himself and went searching for Sephiroth...or something like that.
actully zack got the sword from angeal because angeal gave it to him and zack was felled by siphorth and with his dying breath gave cloud the buster sword to royaly kick siphroths ass.
For anyone who didn't know this already, this is the Buster Sword, which is given to cloud by Zach (as he was dieing from a battle against the entire Shinra army). Cloud then accepts the sword and starts balling over the loss of his friend. the sword was a symbol of honor to its original owner (Angeal) and was taken by Zack after having defeated Angeal (who had been his trainer). The sword was rarely used in battle as stated by both Cloud to Zach, and Zach to Angeal. This is a Brief history of what is most commonly known as...

PS. plz feel free to correct any mistakes i made in my explanation. although i KNOW its the buster sword, i haven't play ff7 all the way through, and haven't beaten crisis core in awhile (got boring around the 10th time i beat it).
Final Fantasy FOREWER, and let it never be a final one! There should be more FF related mods, as for this one, Im not impressed but its a good one. Keep it comin!
