LHammonds, I agree this needs a base of mod data to get started. Unfortunately I can't contribute my time for filling up all the data. What I can do is provide a free to use tool and the means for mod creators to keep it updated.
Wouldn't Unique Landscapes cover a great deal of this land mass? I guess if you used the "Tag Search" feature to search for all "Oblivion" and "New Lands," that would be a good starting ground to populate the data in this XML file.
I do think that somebody would need to add coords for existing mods before future modders would take this seriously and submit their own coords. As it stands right now, it doesn't seem all that useful without the big mods already being included.
arcano200, it can be done, but not with the technology I'm using which is more suitable for the web rather than the desktop. It would also require require interpreting .esp files, the thought of which is quite scary "> On top of that, an automated flagging process wouldn't always be relevant - the author of a mod would know best which cells should be marked as occupied.
It would be nice to be able to zoom in further, given the large (relative) size of cells in oblivion, and that a mod may "occupy" a cell by only moving a couple rocks at the edge of the border. That would be a good deal harder to implement though, so its probably not practical.
I'm not much of a coder, but I suppose you could do something along the lines of exporting the cell details from the esp, stripping that to the grid numbers, and then using those to flag the cells.

i wished i had that before, so i could see if there were any problems with the mods i use.

FYI, the tool is also being discussed at the BGS Forums:

Whether this will take off depends largely on the community.
