It basically allows you to take a portion of a vanquished foe's strengths and weaknesses, and apply it to one of your existing custom-enchanted items. The idea to allow the player to, with some effort, create enchanted items that are on par with those granted by quest rewards.
The idea is based of the enchanting system of The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, where many captured souls added unique bonuses and side-effects to enchantments that use them. I don't know if it's possible to do this with conventional Oblivion soul trapping, but for now, this is the next best thing.
There should be no savegame bloating involved... Imbuing simply modifies your existing custom items, and the proccess (if everything works correctly) is reversable.
