About this mod

New vanilla-textured hairs utilizing vanilla meshes - fully functional, hat and hatless friendly. Male and Female!

Permissions and credits
Summary

This mod adds 12 female hairs and 9 male hairs, all with vanilla-style names (because naming is fun, and these fit right in with vanilla hairs):
  • Female: Art Student, Buinesslike, Close Crop, Crimp 'N Proper, PFC, Radiant Pixie, Radiant Pixie II, Scholastic Queen, Scholastic Royal, Slicked Back, The Tomboy, Trailer Park
  • Male: Boy Scout, Close Crop, Greased, Hail Caesar, PFC, Slicked Back, Smoothly Tousled, The Drop-Out, The Senator

All hairs have EGMs and properly conform to face customization as well as appear correctly with hats.

There is some duplication with Female hairs that I only noticed after I had finished implementation:
  • Scholastic Queen and Scholastic Royal are slightly different sizes of the same texture. If you switch rapidly between them you can tell the difference, but I have named them similarly for clarity's sake. Crim 'N Proper is also the same texture, but it is more obviously a different scale.
  • Radiant Pixie and Radiant Pixie II are very similar as well, utilizing the same texture with slightly different sizes. Included as I already did all the work.

No additional mods required except for something to properly implement these - for compatibility's sake, I have no interest in manually adding these to any races. In order to actually utilize these in game, you will either need to add these hairs to your desired races in xEdit (I do not recommend) or you must utilize a Hair Patcher tool, such as Hair Patcher Two ESPless (I highly recommend this).

Detailed Information

Hairs in Fallout 3 & New Vegas utilize two models within one .nif: A Hat and NoHat version. The NoHat version is the standard hair mesh, while the Hat version is a reduced size mesh to avoid clipping with hats (these Hat versions utilize the same textures as the main hair style). In some cases, these Hat versions actually look fairly good without a hat as an alternative hair style.

I have modified many vanilla hairs' crimped Hat hairs into their own new custom hair styles. Completely standalone, utilizing vanilla textures, with functional EGMs (for morphing/scaling) as well as duplicate Hat/No Hat parts (So you see the same hair with or without hats). I have only chosen hairs that were effectively different than vanilla hairs that already look like this (e.g. the raider/punk hair styles basically all just have the Buzz Saw hair style as their No Hair version) and that actually looked like they could work as standalone hairs (anything with a ponytail/bun looks a bit silly with a 2d squashed bun at the back, made more obvious without a hat covering it).

All EGMs were built from .TRI's based on HeadFixes by ThrottleKitty, which I believe to be the basis of all race mods since. It works on multiple races, and everything works fine on Type4 and Enhanced Vanilla Males. Please let me know if you experience any hairs not moving with head shape changes or bald hair when wearing a hat.

TTW

I use TTW. This is compatible. Please do not ask if this is compatible with TTW.

Requirements

No hard requirements, but to actually use these hairs in game they must be assigned to the race you wish to use. Rather I strongly recommend using Hair Patcher Two ESPless.

Permissions And Credits

Permissions: You only need my permission to utilize these assets in any way you see fit (except to make money off my work), I would just appreciate a heads up so I can see what you do with them! Credit would be appreciated as well but is not required. Be aware that EGMs MUST be packed in a .BSA file to function properly - otherwise the hair will not scale or animate with the head, and will not function properly with a hat.

Credits: All files are created by me based on vanilla hair meshes.

Thanks to the following tools, without which this would not be possible. Included here to provide a loose explanation of how this was made.
  • NifScope: The bulk of the work.
  • Outfit Studio: Removal of some NoHat head parts, as some inexplicably would crash the game when removed with NifScope. Be aware of somewhat sexualised content from this link.
  • The Conformulator: .EGM generated from .OBJ files exported from NifScope. This is far easier than the lack of documentation makes it seem, but it is arcane.
  • Head Fixes: .TRI files used to generate the .EGMs for this hair. Not included in this download, only referenced in the generation process. Permissions are not clear for this mod but as I do not actually include the files, I don't think they are relevant. If you use vanilla heads and have trouble with scaling, try installing this mod. You should not need to download this in general.
  • xEdit: Plugin implementation, because doing this inside the GECK would be ten times more work.
