Any companions currently accompanying you will wear a Radiation Suit whenever you do. This excludes Ghouls, Creatures, and any companions who are currently wearing a full suit of Power Armor.
The suit itself is non-playable and weighs nothing, so it won't take up any of their inventory space and they will always be able to equip it.
