About this mod

A small tweak to EdisLeado's Smoking mod that removes all tobacco-related stat buffs. Your D.A.R.E. instructor would be proud. (New: optional files to remove your post-smoke junk items).

Requirements
Permissions and credits
THIS MOD ONLY CONTAINS AN .ESP AND REQUIRES EDISLEADO'S ORIGINAL MOD, WHICH ITSELF REQUIRES NVSE! THE ORIGINAL MOD CONTAINS THE MESHES, SOUND, AND TEXTURES REQUIRED FOR THIS MOD

New in 2.1! (April 17, 2024)
  • Fixed an oversight where the Nicotine Effect of all smokes, and the LCK +1 effect of Lucky Cigarettes, wouldn't display in your inventory.
  • Changed the name of the LCK +1 effect on the Status Screen from "Tobacco (Luck)" to "Lucky Cigarette."
  • Added optional files that don't add empty cartons, empty packs, and butts to your inventory after retrieving or smoking. While immersive, this can really clutter your inventory, though keeping them enabled can be a fun way to keep track of just how many smokes you've downed. Get those numbers up! Go for the high score!
  • Cleaned masters (for all files).

New in 2.0! (April 14, 2024)

  • Removes the buffs from cigarettes in a slightly less amateur way (the parts of the script where stat buffs were added have simply been commented out, and same for the parts of the script that add extra lucky packs or lucky cigarettes if you use the optional file).
  • Forwards the original mod's Dead Money patch (for the vending machine recipes), meaning that the .ESPs from the original mod are no longer necessary. Only the assets (meshes, sound, and textures folders) from the original mod are required; install the original as normal but do not use any .esp files from the original mod alongside this one.
  • Changed the Dead Money recipe names from "[Return] Cigarette (Carton/Pack)" to "[Return] Cigarette Carton/Pack."
  • Changed the Dead Money vending machine recipe for a cigarette pack to output the unpackable aid-version by default.
-----------------------------------------

All that this revision to Edisleado's original mod does is eliminate all of the stat buffs provided by tobacco in any form—even the vanilla tobacco plant chew. Lucky Cigarettes, however, will still increase your Luck by +1, unless you use the optional file to remove Lucky Cigarettes. Furthermore, this mod does not eliminate or reduce in any way the addiction chance for tobacco or the stat penalties for withdrawal. As a result, the differences between cigarettes, cigarillos, and cigars are purely aesthetic, and if your character develops a smoking habit, it'll be entirely a negative. Nothing good will happen if you smoke, but if you get addicted, bad things will happen if you don't.

You may be asking, why would I install this? Well, the addiction mechanic of this game adds something very valuable: persistent goals for your player character. If you're roleplaying as a smoker, your need to get your next fix and have a decent stash on hand will impact the way you search for loot, purchase from merchants, and approach combat encounters (you wouldn't want to get cravings right in the middle of a fight, would you?). This mod works especially well with mods like More Conditions to Fast Travel, where withdrawal symptoms become much more meaningful; with a mod like that installed, your addiction to cigarettes effectively imposes a tax on fast travel, at the rate of one smoke per trip.

Obviously, all of that is true for any chem that you can get addicted to, but I made this revision in the first place because while I really enjoyed the emergent gameplay of an addiction mechanic, relatively abundant access to cigarettes made it feel like I was playing with permanent stat boosts. Remember, if you do want the boosts, then that's what the original mod alone is for!

Installation and Use

This mod contains nothing but an edited version of the main .esp file of the original mod. Installation is as simple as installing the original mod as normal, but loading my .esp file instead of EdisLeado's. Since my mod forwards the changes of the original's Dead Money patch, you do not need to download the patch file.

  • Download and install this mod as normal. You only need to download the one file, whether it's listed as main or optional, that suits your preference. The versions that remove Lucky Cigarettes or junk items do not actually remove the items from the mod (or your inventory), but just stops the script from running so that you can't acquire them (anymore). This means that it's safe to switch which file you're using at any time.
  • Go to EdisLeado's original mod page and download his mod. You do not need the Dead Money patch (its changes are included in my own mod; see "New in 2.0!" at the top of this description).
  • Install EdisLeado's original mod as normal.
  • Disable "LightUpAndSmokeThoseCigarettes_edisleado.esp" from your load order. You can also just delete the .esp if you want to.
  • Enable "Light Up and Smoke Those (Buffless) Cigarettes.esp" (or whichever variant of it that you downloaded from here) in your load order.

And I swear that I'm not going out of my way or anything to make tweaks to EdisLeado's mods specifically, but as I learn how to make and adjust mods myself, I've been tweaking some of my favorites to better suit my personal preferences.
