The Hollander Hotel and Casino - Full Playthrough
A short little mod with an enjoyably spooky atmosphere.
In fact the atmosphere kinda betrays how tame the mod ultimately ends up being. It reminds me a lot of the game Oxenfree.
There's a base level of creepiness throughout the whole experience that feels like it's building up to the reveal of something truly horrific, but outside of a few big shocks, it never really happens.
I would say it's disappointing, except that... it's kinda cool? It's a suitably off-balance concept for a Ghost story. After all, if we had ghosts going around murdering people left and right, that would be kind of a big deal that would stretch one's suspension of disbelief. It's fine if a story wants to just do it's own thing and be completely off-the-walls, but equal credit has to be given when a story attempts something more reserved.
I will now, until I forget, call this concept "Chekov's Protonpack": If ghosts are going around killing people, there should be people, other than the player, attempting to kill/contain the ghosts.
The level and sound design is good. The standout is obviously the ground floor of the hotel, which really sets the mood of Spooky Hotel.
The upper suite-level floors are pretty samey, and perhaps could have been creepier to explore, but they have plenty of Spooks to keep you going, and I applaud the mod maker, intentionally or not, forgoing having every door accessible, bloating the exploration with excessive rooms for the sake of immursion.
The other major location of the mod you'll visit in the quest has what I recognize as Modder Exhaustion, as it doesn't have nearly as much attention to detail or atmosphere as the hotel, but It's passable, and is a welcome break that makes the return to Hotel just a bit fresher.
Very enjoyable mod, would definitely recommend you play it yourself before watching others though, otherwise a lot of the appeal is lost.
