I did NOT create any .esp in GECK - I simply pasted from resource folders directly across to same named folders in main data directory folder and threw in the .esp plugin from MD Willow. I have the changes to willow in effect now with proper hair/face, but she has a huge red translucent diamond with a white exclamation mark around her. what am I missing here?
This is simply a resource pack that includes only meshes and textures, as well as a basic test file (I haven't messed with it.) You need to grab GECK from the official Bethesda source here The Garden of Eden Creation Kit Wiki. Also be sure to grab the meshes and textures from this file and place them into the proper folders. After you grab it and unzip the contents (to your root New Vegas install directory, such as C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout New Vegas) you'll need to run it and select FalloutNV.esm and anything that edits the vanilla races in the game (such as Lings or Project Mikoto) from the list. Then, click on Character at the top and open up Hairs. Right click in the new list, click New, and type in a unique id for the hair (something like CazyHairs01) then click OK. Make sure that the new hair is selected and type in a name for it, place a checkmark on Playable, remove either male or female if you want (only makes a difference on whether the game will let you give the hair to a guy/girl character/npc.) Now, click on the edit button for art file and select the nif file for the hair in meshes\characters\cazyhair (it should open a window inside the meshes folder where you installed NV.) Use the screenshots to see which ones you want to use. Click edit for the texture file part and select the dds file that matches the mesh you chose. Ignore the ones with _n and _hl at the end, the game uses them for technical stuff. Do that for every hair you want, and click on Character at the top again, and click on race. Select a race you want to add the hairs to on the left, and click on the Face Data tab. Drag the hairs out of the hair window and into the hair list in the race window. Do the same for each other race you want to add it to (if you want to add it to a custom race, just load up the correct esm/esp when you open GECK at the beginning and it's the same) and you're done. Remember to save!! Also remember that you CAN edit the esp after you close GECK. Just make sure that you load up all of it's masters (the files you selected at the beginning) and make your esp the active file (highlight it and click make active file before clicking ok.)
Read the next part for why the person who made the pack wants you to make your own esp.
You are editing the vanilla races, which means that if you don't specifically make it compatible with any other mods, it will overwrite all of their racial edits if loaded after them. You need to include all mods that edit races when you load up GECK. So, if you use Lings, for example, you'll wanna make sure to have it ticked in GECK. That way, your lil mod using these resources doesn't completely negate your other race mods, which is why there isn't an esp included that is compatible with all of the main beauty packs. It would make your game crash if you didn't have Lings/Mokoto/etc installed. That's 4 files that would have to be in the pack. Vanilla, Lings, Mokoto, and both. Starting to get the idea?
Lol. Read this comment from the top. You'll find some useful info on why it isn't working, and why you have to make your own esp.
is this compatible with fallout character overhaul? that mod does have an option for hair and im assuming I would just leave those unchecked if I wanted to use cazy hair. I just wanted to be sure before I start dumping stuff into directory, thanks
Not with out some work in the geck, you will need to add the Hairs to the Custom races FCO creates here is how:
You'll need to create a new 'hairstyle' form. It can be found in the GECK under Character > Hair. Point the model path to the hair you want to use.
Then you need to open the Race entry you want to add the hairstyle too, and drag your hair from the Hair list to the allowed Hairstyles box of the race menu.
After that package it all in a BSA for the EGMs to be read properly.
Unless you had fallout on pc years ago you really can't seem to get anything good. As nicely as I'm trying to put it... why are mod authors taking down their mods and making things so complicated?
Well, you need to create patch override for FCO. With FNVEdit. You need to override races(which you want to be with cazy hairs) from FCO to your patch(new file), and then add cazy hairs manually to HNAM - Hair group in your overridden races. Or you could use this https://yadi.sk/d/XRy97QQ5eoaFJ But it Mikoto - FCO cross patch with Cazy hairs added. My experiment. Obviously, will not work without Mikoto Beauty Pack mod - http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/35878/?.
Anyway, there is also hat problem with cazy hairs. Fixable, of course.
I have no idea what I did. I followed what androidmaster said but I couldn't figure out how to mess with the race so I just skipped it and it worked! Thanks for the help.
