About this mod

Transform the bleak landscapes of Vvardenfell in green, lush, forested areas (Classic).

Newer version

You may want to have a look to the newer version of Forested Morrowind. It uses nicer looking trees, but it has fewer options.

Description

The mod converts a large part of Vvardenfell in luxuriant green landscapes.

There are three different esp files, each gives more than the previous:

  • "Green Morrowind," makes the Ashlands, Molag Amur, and the Red Mountain luxuriant and green using only normal Morrowind assets,
  • "Leafy Morrowind," replaces most of the trees on the whole Vvardenfell with leafy player-made models,
  • "Forested Morrowind," all you get in Leafy Morrowind, plus few extra dense forests and many more trees.

Most of the work has been made by an author called Max, I wanted to give to his mod more visibility as I think it deserves it.

I put the original three mods  in one place, cleaned them with tes3cmd, and prepared few extra files that give you the watercolor aesthetic, high resolution, more colored leaves, slightly bended trees, or a lore-friendly alternative. Consider that Leafy and Forested Morrowind use their own tree models. If you want to use a tree replacer, for example the work of Vurt or Remiros, consider the "Green Morrowind" variant for it uses only Morrowind assets that will be replaced.

Lore-friendly alternative

In the download section is also an alternative mod based on Forested Morrowind that leaves untouched the Ashlands, Molag Amur, and the Red Mountain regions. This variant kills the original idea of making Vvardenfell nice and green, but it is more lore-friendly keeping good part of the island a barren, unfriendly wasteland and gives you have all the new trees in the Grazelands, Ascadian Islands, and Western Gash regions.

In the new texture archives (watercolored or high resolution) the ground textures are separated. You should not use the ground textures with the lore-friendly variant for they makes the Ashlands green.

Notes

In the screenshot section are various examples. The game may be using the Watercolor aesthetic or the high resolution textures from (in order Intelligent Textures, Visual Pack Combined, Vurt's Silt Strider Retexture, all from Ashlanders Textures before Morrowind Forested.

In the main file the original readme files are included untouched: 'readme - 1 green morrowind.txt', 'readme - 2 leafy morrowind.txt', and 'readme - 3 forested morrowind.txt' were written by Max to explain his vision of the mods.

'readme - 4 watercolored.txt' has been written by me and it is about my small part.

What about the Bitter Coast?

Forested Morrowind covers Vvardenfell of trees, the change makes the woods of the Bitter Coast to lose a bit of their uniqueness. To compensate I put in the download section also the mod from Connary and Vality that makes the Bitter Coast much more swampy and overgrown.

Installation and Compatibility

Start with the main file and possibly install on top the extra ones, use one esp at time. For example you might want the high level textures. As usual copy the files in the proper directories under Data Files. or if you are using OpenMW add the directory names in the openmw.cfg configuration file.

The mod is compatible with all quests from the original game, but since it covers a wide area it may conflict with other mods. However, the worst it can happen is you'll find a tree growing from a building or a creature stuck in tree.  If you see such problems just open the console, click on the tree, type disable, and press enter. If you are interested making a compatibility patch, let me know.

Besides, some dialogues will sound a bit strange. Ashlanders will speak about barren wastelands and surface lava that are nowhere to be seen...

Modder resource

Forested Morrowind includes many classic tree models from (at least) Dracus, Jdooby, and N'dib. So it is also a modder resource. If you are interested check the nif files.

History

v3, High resolution textures now cover all textures, including leaves and barks; the new resolution has been upscaled 4 times with Esrgan, the ground textures are also more colorfully coherent. Add the Connary/Vality Bitter Coast addon.
v2, Made the mod modular, added an high resolution variant, added the (I thought) lost Green Morrowind, properly compressed the watercolored variant, add a lore-friendly version that leaves Vvardenfell wastelands untouched.
v1, Improved the looks considering the brush stroke sizes with more care. Added an alternative, more colorful, leaves texture set.
v0, Prepared Forested Morrowind with the Watercolored aesthetic just applying the oilify filter without much of rhyme or reason. Cleaned the esp files with tes3cmd.

Acknowledgments

The work come from a mod author called "Max" that left his results in the public domain. Thank you Max.

Mr. Swiveller made the textures for the Emperor Parasols in the watercolored colorful variant and most of the ground textures for the high resolution variant.

The Connary/Vality Bitter Coast mod comes from the titular authors, Connary is the author of most textures, Vality of the tree replacement.

Laeris and LyonHrt made the Ersgan models I used to upscale barks and leaves textures.
