I've downloaded this last year when it was released, but had totally forgotten about it. Now I've tried it and I must say it's really amazing! I don't know about the problems others have mentioned, but I don't have MAO installed. I was surprised to hear two guards who had spotted an enemy from far away, though... at first it sounded very near to me, but that may have been because both were shouting at the same time.
A bit late to answer my own post, maybe, but I don't seem to have this problem any more, but I'm on a completely different computer now, so who knows... anyway for people who have problems installing/using this, here is what I did:
First, I used this version, not the one from this page, because it appears to be newer. It doesn't matter that it is from the Fallout: New Vegas section, as this is not a mod as such, but a .dll that can enhance the sound capabilities of many older games. Make sure the files are in the main installation folder, where the Morrowind.exe is. Find out if your headphones are using 44100 Hz or 48000 Hz mode in the Windows sound settings. Open the alsoft.ini in the Morrowind installation folder with a text editor and make sure all occurences of these numbers match your settings. Enable Hardware Accelerated 3D Audio in the ingame sound settings.
If I'm using openmw, should i use this mod or enable hrtf through the openmw settings? https://openmw.readthedocs.io/en/stable/reference/modding/settings/sound.html#hrtf-enable
This mod doesn't exactly explain things properly and the read me is for a different game. The other read mes don't tell you how to instal.. and my game won't run now.
Nice in theory but with a big problem for me, both in Morrowind software/hardware mode, with or without any other spatial effect/equalization with my Realtek integrated chipset: Min/Max range of sound definition seems to not be respected at all, sounds emitted using the PlaySound3D scripting command are played at maximum volume regardless of distance from the player (this is particularly evident e.g. with MAO lantern sound activators Sound AO_Lantern_0X) such making a confused continued high level background noise
He means that the main menu sounds a bit muffled, not as crisp as vanilla. I find that all sounds are now a little bit muffled but the overall effect is really impressive. I normally play with headphones so this is a real treat. Thank you!
EDIT: Actually it sounds like ALL the 'non-spatial' sound, such as menus and sounds made by the player are all a bit muffled now. Only drawback I've found so far.
yeah if you are playing without headphones it will really screw up the sound in your game and sorry its turned out slightly muffled for you but keep tinkering with the in game audio and you should find a good compromise. thanks for downloading anyways
@SuperQuail Muffled sounds with DSOAL is caused by something in Windows 8/8.1/10's audio stack. The fix for it is usually to go into your speaker properties, untick "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device", and then tick "Disable all enhancements".
im using a gtx 1060 6gb version and a i5 4690k at 4.6ghz and im using default morrowind not OpenMW so im not sure my mod list would work but if you are still interested let me know and ill message it to you. As Oxary said they are using openmw and it works so you should be fine, thanks for checking out the mod
I have a GTX 1080 and i7 2600k @ 4.8 and it's dipping to 40-50 fps in post- S.T.E.P and shader heavy Balmora :D
A tip for dedicated sound card users that wish to use higher sampling than 44Hz: Edit the alsoft.ini to use "frequency=48000" and "default-hrtf=Built-In 48000Hz" instead so it will work with 48000Hz sound output.?" Of course replace the frequency parameter with the one you are using.
PM me the modlist if You can, that would be great :)
@kamilfranke I am currently working on v1.32 of the Fallout 3/New Vegas "True 3D sound for Headphones" mod and it will come with new 48000Hz personalized HRTF tables if you are interested.
