About this mod

A food balance mod that strikes a balance between gameplay and realism. The mod aims to make food viable for different strategies when saving food for consumption in travel and combat. Alcohol has been tweaked to serve an alternative from potions. Potions are tweaked for balance.

Permissions and credits
As much as we are grateful for an existance of a realistic medieval simulator, there is that part where you ask what the hell is wrong with the devs. Apart from the flawed but fun combat, the tremendous bugs, the too predictable linear story experience, you expect the immersion to hold much water.

It does, and does...not. While it's great that energy, nourishment and health are well balanced game systems, the items that come with it are not. Dried Mushrooms that feed more than other nutritious foods (and even heals), two roast duck legs that can withstand an entire day from hunger, apples that heal, one cabbage that somehow feeds a man that does far more than soldierly duties. Right, something has to be done.

I'll try to target the sweet spot between gameplay and realism, gameism if you will. It should make sense that this food type helps you in this particularly, whilst leaning close to real life food principles. Hopefully that bean pot wont be so attractive, once I figure how to remove it in future version.

Here are the goals this food mod will achieve:

  - Gives a more reasonable food stat benefits and consequences that improves immersion, whilst balancing gameplay.
  - Make most (if not all) food types viable for different strategies on travelling, resting and in combat.
  - Turn alcohol into a secondary option with distinct benefits.
  - Potions have slightly worse consequences so as to discourage the concept of 'binging' on would be drugs, and benefits to offset the change

Food Principles

Health – When wounded or injured, food like alcohol provides a temporary reprieve from pain, and thus it is sensible as a healing item. Honey provides antiseptic properties that it can be a useful small healing item. Meats provide protein which might aid in recuperation, and thus reflects in the energy loss from eating. Food with medicinal properties heal slightly.

Nourishment – Food high in fats and carbohydrates will provide the best nourishment. Filling, and quality food provides that extra bonus. Most fruits, vegetables and mushrooms have low calories, and reflects as such.

Energy – Sugars gives fuel for one to go on without sleep, hot food also helps for one to wake up and be ready. Dry food or food that needs chewing (like meats) tends to sap energy, but refreshing foods boost it slightly

Durability – Food that is dry, or plant by nature are good traveling food. Meats, cooked food should be meant for eating whilst settling at a location. The easier the food is transported could also indicate the better durability of the food.

Alcohol – Versatile attribute that it differs on many types, giving decent nutrition on it’s quality, good health for it’s effects, and energy for it’s warmth. The consequence is mainly reflected from alcoholism, which is used as the control point from spamming.

Weight - Bowls are definitely much heavier due to the bowls... Watermelon isnt a convinent fruit used for travel. Some minor tweaks on weight

Prices - Potions are more or less expensive to the desire of their rarity or properties. Some food types are priced based on quality so you have options to go cheap or eat like a king. Game meat is slightly lowered, also testing has to be done to make more sense out of it.
Food Tweaks:

Bowls
Mushes, soups, straight from the pot. Cheap nourishment that has some energy gain. It’s quite filling, but it should not be travel friendly, considering that it’s liquid food, and the bowls are additional weight.

Dairy & Eggs
High in fats and protein, these food provide good nourishment and a small health bonus whilst losing little energy. Spoils fast though.

Dried Food
Handy for long voyages, but the downside of it is that most of it’s nutrition is reduced.

Drinks
A substitute for potions, each drink has distinct bonuses and penalties. Beer(cheap) Wine(Nutrition) Mead(Energy gain) Spirits+Schnapps(Healing)

Fruits
Perfect for travel, these fruits lasts quite long, and provide some energy from it's crisp and refreshing taste

Meats
Good nourishment source at the expense of energy. Spoils fast unless cooked, but provides another alternative to healing. Gamier meats provide better quality healing and nutrition. Preserved meats last longer with slightly lower benefits.

Pastry
Heavyweight food that gives good nourishment, and keeps for awhile

Vegetables and mushrooms
Food that has low benefits unless cooked. Has little penalties from eating to reflect it's 'healthy' nature. Loses alittle weight when cooked

Potions

Potions that improves focus and concentration does not have include alcohol, whilst strength or chraisma potions have alcohol in them. Buffed and nerfed various potions, some potions have added alcohol to control drink binges. Increased and decreased prices accoridng to their desirability.

INSTALLATION
Install the zzz_sensiblefoodmodv01.pak into the data files, alongside the other .pak files

COMPATABILITY
Tweaks the food.xml file and pickable_item.xml file

Changelog
v0.2 - Added price and weight changes. Tweaked some values of various foods. Added durability of most foods since they get poisonous at below 50% mark. Price of Saviour schnapps lowered by half to fit into most alcohols

v0.11 - Changed pot stew nourishment from 25 to 10
v0.1 - Initial release

NOTES
Take note that this is a work in progress, as I have not factored in the tremendous amounts of meat gained from hunting, not tweaking food prices and food availability in shops and taverns which I will get into the future.
