For anyone that's interested, I've just uploaded v1.7, which has these changes:
Added the ability to specify custom file extensions for users who have additional files to backup. (ChicagoJoe)
Hopefully improved error handling when a particular folder path can no longer be found. (HeyyAabot)
The Game Save Monitor is a Windows desktop utility which automatically creates backup copies of the Generation Zero game save files. This is helpful if the game or system crashes, and leaves the only save file in a corrupted state. With a backup, you can restore to the most recent save.
Please let me know what you think, endorse if you find it useful. Also please feel free to post a success story of how you found GSM to be helpful.

With Latest Update Today ... 5/25/23 ... The launcher is Broken or seems to Be .. Can not launch game.
Edit: Was able to start game .. but all weapons and inventory were gone, Like starting new game all over again from scratch/day 1. Don't know if update corrupter the files or not .. But thought I should let you know and Thank you.
Launches game fine but then crashes with this error info:
An exception occurred during the operation, making the result invalid. Check InnerException for exception details. Could not find file 'C:\Users\********\Documents\Generation Zero Save File Backups\SAVE_BACKUP_0'. at System.ComponentModel.AsyncCompletedEventArgs.RaiseExceptionIfNecessary() at System.ComponentModel.RunWorkerCompletedEventArgs.get_Result() at SaveFileMonitor.SaveFileMonitorModel.BackgroundFileCopyWorker_RunWorkerCompleted(Object sender, RunWorkerCompletedEventArgs e) at System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker.OnRunWorkerCompleted(RunWorkerCompletedEventArgs e) at System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker.AsyncOperationCompleted(Object arg) at System.Windows.Threading.ExceptionWrapper.InternalRealCall(Delegate callback, Object args, Int32 numArgs) at System.Windows.Threading.ExceptionWrapper.TryCatchWhen(Object source, Delegate callback, Object args, Int32 numArgs, Delegate catchHandler)
Does the same when I try to create a manual backup. Figured it was caused by not finding a backup file (that IS what it says in the second line...). :)
Yes, I have given it admin status. No, it didn't make a difference.
I'm new at modding like this, so bear with me. If we have save files with mods that have not updated, do we just lose those saves that have that mod included? I've noticed that with this new update some modders haven't updated and was curious if this is why I can't load old saves. I'm not use to having to start a game over because of a mod, like what I'm experiencing now. I'm also not use to modding the way this game does either. I could very well be missing something.
I like the idea of having this tool but if mods don't update, will these saves be able to load?
Thanks, y'all!
*Never mind. I think I understand this now. I spoke too soon.
Thank You for this mod But I have 1 question .. You said in the features that:
Allows for a manual backup of the save files.
Is there a key binding for this in the program or is it just the auto backup .. that we set it at. The reason, I ask this is .. I lost 3 hours of play time yesterday after dying and game crashed .. couldn't do anything but use the windows out button for escape. Thank you and have a good Christmas
The "manual backup" feature is just the "Create Backup Now" button on the main app window. Unfortunately building a hotkey directly in the game can be tricky, but I will add that to the to-do list (no ETA however). The good news is that you can setup the GSM to automatically backup every 10 minutes, so hopefully that will prevent losing so many hours of gameplay.
I purchased GZ today due to the steam sale, was wondering if this utility is safe to use with the patch/update released today 'Dangerous Experiments', I don't see anything in the update notes about saves so I'm hoping yes? Thanks in advance
Sorry to bump you again, just curious about optional mod parameters field. Leave this empty unless if a mod specifies to use it? Or is this where I should place .exe launch options, for example --vfs-fs dropzone --vfs-archive archives_win64/initial --vfs-archive archives_win64/supplemental --vfs-archive archives_win64/optional (currently I have this set in Steam -> GZ -> Properties -> Launch Options)
This is a much needed mod considering that without it anyone can and most likely will lose tons of hours saved due to an issue the devs can't sort out. Before this mod I had 2 corrupted saves, which both happened from black screen lockup and having to power off pc and restart. With this mod I have now logged over 100 hours on the same character and have not had to restart so thank you for making this.

The utility should remember your settings once you save them. Please set them again and let me know if the same issue occurs again.
Best Regards!
Glad to hear it!

I was able to load my save game successfully using the launcher, however I never tried base building.
Best Regards!

Does the top portion of the main form display all green checkmarks? Can you post a screenshot please? That will really help with troubleshooting.
Best Regards!

That feature was added by request, so unfortunately I have not personally used it myself. Give it a try and let me know.
