Edit: Having never touched FO4Edit/TES5Edit etc, it took me less than 5 minutes to download and change the equipment slot to something else. If you need it to be a different slot, grab FO4Edit and change it!
I changed mine to 59, which is labeled as Shield with seemingly no adverse effects. Edit edit: I lied. Shield seems to conflict with items like grenades. Have to re-equip it after I use a grenade or something. Either way, you can change the slot.

Should work fine with companion and the player character. It uses the ring slot, so make sure you don't have the wedding ring equipped. I haven't given it to a companion yet, but I've used it on my character without trouble.
