I've made a couple of obscure gun mods before but this is my first time having designed a gun from scratch. I think it turned out really well. Design-wise, it's meant to evoke the sort of interwar-era, about mid-1920s, experimental weapon that's incredibly cool-looking but also quite impractical. Imagine if the BAR, the MG13, and a Winchester had a lovechild, and the spawn from that unholy union would probably be this: the Self-Loading Rifle.
Some of the Forgotten Weapons viewers out there will recognize a huge influence from this funky Czechoslovak prototype as well, which was actually unintentional. I had it floating around in my subconscious but I didn't realize the similarity until I was halfway done with the model - the idea was to make a cross between the Combat Rifle and the Lever-Action Rifle from Far Harbor.
It's meant to be a gas-operated rifle by way of a barrel shroud that traps gas at the muzzle, using the force from the blast to propel the barrel and bolt backwards, which then return forward under spring pressure to cycle the action.

The original concept includes the ability to remove the shroud, thus disabling the ability for automatic fire, after which the rifle would operate as a lever-action; the lever would be used to manually cycle the action for reloading or as a failsafe if the action jammed or failed to cycle properly (which is why it's called a lever gun in the files). Yes, it's totally impractical, unfeasible, and unrealistic, but I think lever-actions are cool as hell. Unfortunately, I don't have the skills or knowledge to make custom animations, so it's only automatic and borrows the Combat Rifle animations. (For now...?)

The Self-Loading RIfle is much more powerful than the Combat Rifle and effective at short-to-medium-range. It packs a hell of a punch... provided you can hit your target, because it also kicks like a mule! Its high stopping power is initially offset by its small ammo capacity (the standard mag holds 10 rounds) and its accuracy, or should I say, its lack thereof. However, once upgraded enough, the gun can be specialized either to accurately mow down hordes of ghouls from the hip, or to pick off Gunners at range.
With the right attachments, the Self-Loading Rifle becomes more like an LMG hybrid and can even have improved accuracy with sustained fire!
The Self-Loading Rifle uses .308 ammo, which can be converted to .50 cal. for even more damage. You can find it in the world at staggered levels: potential legendary and boss-level loot at level 20; Gunners, raider bosses, and super mutant bosses at level 25; vendors at level 30; and Minutemen at level 40.
There's one unique variant in the Commonwealth, amongst the would-be spoils of a failed bank heist.
