With the development of Panthera species, the Jaguar features some of the most well balanced attributes of genetic line. Like their other feline counterparts they possess acute agility and strength, but they are by far the best swimmers, thus providing a diverse range of environmental adaption. In combination with their rosettes black spots, this often assists them in breaking up their silhouette in stealthy encounters to unprepared foes. With all of this in-mind, the jaguar by extension offers superb flexibility in all operations.

While other Panthera of the line may possess greater raw strength, any close encounter should come with extreme caution as they possess the strongest bite force of any Feline known.

"Touch the Jaguar they said, it would be fun they said. They should have said not to take that literally!"

An elusive line of the Panthera, the Snow Leopard (colloquially referred to as "Snep"), finds itself uniquely specialized to its namesake. Developing a fur pattern that naturally camouflages them in the tundra and snowy mountains they are by far the best choice for long-term winter engagements. When lacking equipment their insulation and large paws present excellent snow adaptation for travel or hunkering down regardless of circumstances. They are however the most shy and introverted of the Panthera. Their solitary inclination would make it wise for them to be deployed alone. As single units they traverse distances most marathon runners would view as a juggernaut of a challenge.

"He dangled from the climbing wall with joyous ambition, leading me to ask if he would give a public speech on his technique. From that all I saw was fear struck across his face."

The Puma line of the Cats share similar traits to the jaguar with both species being balanced in their physical performance in their environments. The Cougar finds itself specialized in ambushing and stalking its targets, patiently waiting for the moment to pounce. They are adaptive swimmers as well, but lack the sheer strength of their spotted counterparts. However, they are uniquely gifted in their leap and pounce; any opponent assuming they posses the high ground will find that thought running away as quick as a cheetah, for the Cougar line can leap up to 6 meters in the ar. In addition to these observations, a mutation of them developing saber teeth has been noted.

“She told me age is but a number, and now everyday I am alert to my surroundings for ambush. Which I often failed at.”

While not a member of the Panthera line, the Cheetah defies itself in more ways than one being the only member of the Acinonyx family. Incredible agility is a quality possessed by all Felidae species, but far exceeds any expectations and hopes! Often achieving speeds almost twice the rate of their fellow cats. Their enlarged lungs and highly efficient circulatory system make them the ideal candidate for interception and reconnaissance; however what is gained in speed is lost lose in defense, so watch yourself.

"She told me it would be here in 30 minutes or it's free. She not only delivered it in 3, but ate it entirely."

The Leo branch of the Panthera line represents the raw strength and determination that the Big Cats are most known for. These heavy weight champions can hold themselves in the most perilous encounters. Not quick or flashy, but they will get the job done. While agility may not be as accelerated as their relatives, this one shortcoming is made up by their social tendencies. Lions demonstrate tremendous cooperation, and a squad (pride) is a fearsome force to behold.

“I found myself surrounded by 3 of the beasts at the weight bench. My bloody body locked up in fear, but he just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich.”

An interesting development of the Jaguar, the panther is a melanistic color variation of the species. While similar in all physical features as to that of the jaguar, the recessive melanistic traits makes them easier to identify in stealthier operations. However, in dense jungles and dark environments their pigment development gives them a slight edge to their fellow jaguars. Making them a desirable subtype through LM application.

“It is said courage is found in unlikely places, and last night we had discovered that in the form of stepping on a panther’s tail in the pitch darkness.”

DISCLAIMER: for the time being, any mention of special abilities or physical traits for each race are for lore/flavor purposes only and have no effects on gameplay.

Requirements:

--- F4SE
--- Caliente's Beautiful Bodies Enhancer -CBBE-
--- LooksMenu

--- ZeX - ZAZ Extended Skeleton

--- Race Changer
(OPTIONAL, only required if you intend to change the Player's race on an existing save).
--- Bodyslide and Outfit Studio
(OPTIONAL, only required if you want to customize the body shape or generate Nevernude versions of the bodies).

CUSTOM HAIR REQUIREMENTS:
(Required for the custom KS hairs included with the race to work; otherwise, there will be texture bugs. Only materials and textures are required, meshes and plugins can be safely skipped/deleted if desired).
--- Commonwealth Cuts
--- KS Hairdos – Addon with Physics

Notes for Character Creation:

--- If you do NOT want to play as a Feline, and only want to install the base race mod itself (e.g. because some other mod you use adds feline NPCs and has this mod as a requirement), simply don't install or enable any of the Player plugins included here! The FOMOD installer should handle that choice for you, but this is worth pointing out regardless.

--- There are several alternate skins/texture options available through LooksMenu's Skin Override system ("Skin" tab in the Body submenu). These can be applied to all of the races, not just the (sub)species they are based on. Currently available skins: Black Panther, Albino/White Lion, King Cheetah, 3 different "spot density" options for Jaguars.
--> If using Skin Overrides, check the "Known Issues" section.

--- All races start the player and their spouse in chargen with a "base" preset (Preset 01) that has no morphs or extra tints applied, to act as reference for what their basic look is and to work as a blank canvas or a"reset" button" for customization. As a result, these may look a bit "samey" or barebones at first; the idea is to start customizing them further from that base. The race presets "slider" itself is used to select whether you want to have extra face fur on the player or not (the fur adds some visual quality but it can clip through hairs or headgear or have visual bugs due to the way FO4 handles transparency). Stick to Preset 01 for no fur, or swap to Preset 02 before editing your character to keep the fur.
--> Do note that the face fur will NOT be affected by skin overrides or alternate textures, so you'll probably want to stick to no fur if you intend to use those.

--- Some of the races have extra customization options (such as piercings) available in the "Facial Hair" submenu; highlight/select the Eyebrows face region and hit "T" to access it.
--> LooksMenu might bug out after selecting it; see the "Known Issues" section below for what to do.

--- Most of the races have extra shape customization options (e.g. ear shape, nose shape) available in the "Type" submenu; highlight/select the corresponding face region and hit "T" to access them.

--- Each race has its own custom head shape applied by default, but these are universal for all races and can be swapped. Open the "Type" submenu for the Cheekbones face region to select the head shape you want and/or blend it with the base shape.

-- There are several scars, paints and face masks available in the "Extras" submenu during chargen.

Other Notes:

--- Felines will use a custom body with beast feet by default, customizable through Bodyslide sets (for both males and females) and with nude and nevernude options available. Default meshes are Nevernude and use the CBBE/BT3 Zeroed Sliders shape with pre-generated morph data for ingame morphing. Slidersets are listed under the "Snow Leopard Race" name/category.

--- The Player module of this mod requires a new game to work properly! Installing this on an existing save where the player is human (or anything that isn't a previous version of this very own mod) is not officially supported and is likely to lead to bugs like human heads on feline bodies, bugged face textures, bugged skin tints, and so on. If you attempt to use this on an existing game, you do so at your own risk (but in that case, make sure to install Race Changer).

--- Due to the way equipment slots and body meshes work in Fallout 4, any items or outfits that take up the default body outfit slot (Slot 33 - Body) will
replace the custom beast legs/feet with whatever meshes are included in the outfit nif itself, presumably human legs and feet. This is unavoidable. The custom feet will only be visible when naked or wearing gear that has been edited to use the custom beast-feet body meshes.

--- The mod includes a handful custom headgear items specifically built for the races themselves, available under the "FELINE RACES" category in the Chemistry Workbench. These are meant as a fallback to be able to have some kind of headgear on your cats due to the lack of proper vanilla refits or any other meaningful headgear support.
--> These items will default to a shape that will match the head of whatever race you are playing as, but you can change the race fit at the Armor Workbench if you have changed/customized the Player's head shape to a nonstandard one for their base race.

--- The mod also includes a custom kimono outfit with matching mask available at the Chemistry Workbench. Includes proper support for the races' custom bodies, as well as Bodyslide sets for customization.

--- There are wearable "Tail Hider" and "Short/Stubby Tail" items available under the "FELINE RACES" category in the Chemistry Workbench, in case you ever want or need to hide the tail or make it much shorter on any of the races.

Recommended Mods:

--- Start Me Up Redux by Dashboarderian (Original mod by TinyManticore): SMU is strongly recommended, in order to prevent the game's plot and dialogue from going completely haywire due to the change to the player'sspecies. To do so, simply choose one of the starts as a random wastelander that removes any mentions to the PC being related to Shaun and having lived pre-War. (It should be noted that while SMU is still not a hard requirement and the mod should work without it, the tests on a 100% vanilla start have been minimal and there could be some weirdness involved).

--- Furry Fallout 4 by BadPup: adds another feline race not included in this mod (Tiger) as well as different takes on Lions and Cheetahs. Also includes vanilla headgear refits for its own cat races which can be applied to races from this mod through an optional plugin (included in the installer).

Quirks and Known Issues:

--- If Nate remains human but Nora is properly changed into a Feline, that means you have a mod conflict with some other plugin that edits the base Player actor data. In that case, make sure to move the Player plugin from this mod to the bottom of your load order so it loads after everything else/wins any conflicts.

--- The tail may spazz out and get stuck in a weird/distorted position, especially after using some crafting workbenches or furniture. Simply open and close the PipBoy and the tail should go back to normal.

--- Certain outfits may automatically cause the tail to bug out when worn, with no amount of Pipboy opening and closing being able to solve it; this happens when the outfit uses the exact same vanilla long coat clothphysics set/data as the tails do, and there's no way to avoid it other than using the Tail Hider item for as long as the outfit itself is worn.

--- If using any of the Skin Overrides applied through LooksMenu's body tab, these may bug out after loading a save or changing cells and either fail to load the override texture on body and hands (in which case you'll have to equip-and-unequip an item in each slot in order to "bump" LooksMenu into loading the proper textures) or un-apply itself altogether (in which case you'll have to open LooksMenu on the player and apply the override again). These are caused by bugs in the LooksMenu .DLL code itself and there's nothing we can do to solve them.

--- Highlighting the different face regions in LooksMenu may cause face fur to become invisible. The bug goes away as soon as you stop highlighting the region or enter edit mode for that region, and thus shouldn't interfere with character creation much beyond being a minor visual annoyance.

--- If you are using NAC X, felines may end up displaying a blatant texture mismatch (most notably a difference in shine/gloss) between body and hands or head while wearing certain outfits. This is caused by NAC X's edits to the default head/hands/body skin materials, and there's nothing to be done about it from this mod's end.
--> Do note that this bug may apply to other custom races as well.

--- LooksMenu may bug out and enter a "glitched" state where pressing any key always shows the same (wrong) submenu, and trying to click or hit "E" keeps returning to the base UI/menu instead. This is a vanilla LooksMenu bug and is very prevalent when editing Nora during initial chargen. If this happens, do this:

  • Return to the base UI/menu, and hit "F" once. This would usually open the faceregions menu, but the UI on the right will still show whichever one LM got stuck at.
  • Avoid hitting any keys or hovering the cursor over the bugged menu on the right. Slowly move the cursor over the PC's face until you manage to highlight (with the "green hologram" effect) either the hair or eyes.
  • Hit "C" once. This will open either the hair color or eye color selectors, depending on which of them was highlighted. (The UI on the right should un-glitch itself and show the corresponding options).
  • (Optional) Use the mouse or arrow keys to browse through some eye/hair color options at random, and make sure they work/change properly.
  • Back out of the color selector menu.
This should (key word: should) reset LM to a working state and allow you to continue editing your character. Note that you may need to do this several times throughout a single chargen session.
