Q: Does this have any FPS hit? A: Nope! All it does is darken the cell fog colors that are already there, it doesn't add or change anything else.
Q: Does this work with ELFX? A: ELFX is a complete lighting overhaul, and modifies the same data this mod does, so there will be conflicts. You should use ELFX on its own.
Q: Some locations have disappearing walls/floors/etc. What do I do? A: This means another mod in your load order is conflicting. If another mod changes precombine data or layout of the cell, a patch needs to be made. A simple bashed-patch style is all that is needed (conflicting mod's changes with Interior Enhanced lighting data joined into a patch plugin.)
The way interiors look with this mod is absolutely how it should... however.. where it is pitch black for me, enemies can still detect me as opposed to how they wouldnt detect me outside with Darker Nights. I cant even see my own character in 3rd person but enemies can.. Turning off the mod explains why they can see me.. the corner im trying to hid in is actually really well lit! So it seems this mod darkens unlit areas but only for MY eyes! Unfortunately
Pretty sure this is just stealth being janky. Being in the dark never guarantees stealth in BGS games.
If you type this in the player console you will see the lighting level on the player, you can test in the same spot before/after the mod:
player.gll And you will see that in fact it's very low with this mod on. But the stealth calculations in Skyrim and Fallout 4 factor other things in much heavier such as your level, your movement, sound level, distance, and so-on. There is a "view cone" that ignores a lot of things including physical walls. You can see this early game when sneaking 2 floors down Raiders will still say "What the heck was that?" and start patrolling. There are some mods that make this a bit better.
In fact this is giving me an idea for an add-on for this mod that will help!
It's compatible in that it doesn't cause problems, but Subway Runner Revised would need to have its own cells edited, i.e. a patch would need to be made for it to have dark fog as well.
Subway Runner Revised uses similar techniques like fadingsigal uses, in fact i scaled down the lighting to the lowest numbers possible. If you prefer fadingsingals settings, you must create a patch. Which is super easy when done with FO4Edit.
Looks like this mod has quite a bit of potential. Although it completely ruins interior cells for places like USAF Satellite Array and leaves floating items in other indoor cells. I made sure it was at the bottom of my load order, and I have no other mods that effect interiors.
Hey there. It doesn't ruin any interiors. You're experiencing a common conflict when multiple mods have conflicting cell header data. You may not think you have mods that affect interiors, but I assure you, you almost certainly do.
I can probably help troubleshoot it if you want. Load your mod list in FO4Edit, use the search in the upper-left to look for 00068F7C (that's the cell ID for USAF Satellite Array), take a screenshot and show me what you see. Also post up your mod list here.
Really want to use this mod but all ways end up with a crippling hit to my frame rate when inside. Is this mod compatible with darker nights? Any one else have this issue and fix it?
This doesn't do anything that can alter performance, so it sounds like it's conflicting with something that alters precombined meshes and is thus disabling it, which causes big FPS problems.
Make sure it's like this in your load order if you're using PRP. If you're using other mods that alter interior cells make sure those load later as well.
Buy the DLC. Im so tired of people saying this. Its 2024 the dlc cost a few bucks. It adds tons of content. If you like this game then why in the world would you not own the dlc????
Hi @fadingsignal, I hope you don't mind me asking, is there a way to make interiors even darker with your mod? Aside from turning my monitor brightness down :D
Long story short, I was trying to use ELFX with PRP, I have the compatibility patch so they are working together but they cause wickedly bad black banding in extremely dark interiors. I've spent multiple hours each day for two weeks trying everything possible to resolve the issue but there is no way around it, apparently the banding it's visible for everyone but because I use an OLED monitor it makes it 10x worse. It really is extreme, everything is covered in gray stripes that flicker as you move.
I tested your Enhanced Interiors mod before ELFX as a lot of people recommended it, but it doesn't make the interiors dark enough for me, on my monitor they are still incredibly bright that I would hardly ever need to use a light. So I wondered if you knew of a way or a patch that would make your mod even darker?
Hi! Every value for every cell would need to be re-edited, which is a lot of work - not something one can easily do without some kind of automation. And it may just re-introduce the same problem when it gets dark enough.
I play on a large OLED and use ELFX and experience that issue as well, though I was able to mitigate it somewhat. There is another mod "eXo Patch" that brings the ambient levels in ELFX up slightly so they aren't flat 0 black, which also helps them work with night vision. It's in the update files section: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/64990?tab=files
But the core if the issue you and I are experiencing is that OLED is allowing one to see extremely low levels of color not normally seen with previous displays. On the 0-255 color scale we're talking about ranges of 0-10 in the dark areas. That's barely any information for the renderer to work with to display fine details, so you end up with clipping and other artifacts.
Fallout 4 is also SDR, so there is very little information to work with in those lower ranges. And things like Windows auto-HDR doesn't solve this.
Lastly, most OLEDs still have issues with accurately displaying information in that lowest area of darkness. My particular display (LG C2) has a known issue with artifacts, banding, and shadow flicker in those lowest areas.
If you're using ENB, one thing you might be able to do is tweak the AmbientLightIntensityInterior in the [ENVIRONMENT] section. You can either darken Interiors Enhanced, or brighten ELFX a bit and try to get the banding to calm down.
Hope that's helpful. Cheers to another OLED DEEP DARK player!
Hi @fadingsignal, I want to start by saying a gigantic and enormous THANK YOU!
I have been trying to fix this issue for the past two weeks, and I'm a little embarrassed to say I have spent upwards of 4-5 hours working on this every day bar one Sunday trying to resolve it. It's one of those issues I just couldn't let go, I needed to know why.
I posted in dozens of forums, Reddit, and mod creator discords asking for help or advice, and most of the replies were: "Don't use the mod then, duh!" or "I don't have this problem, therefore, you did something wrong and/or your monitor must be broken/needs calibrating". I also realized I needed to do a lot of reading and educate myself about how these mods work. I knew it was a visible issue for others as I tested it on one of my ISP panels but only slight, barely noticeable, so OLED was amplifying it. And my theory was because of the perfect (zero) black levels.
So to hear you say this after I've been pulling my hair out and losing sleep for the past couple of weeks... I let out a very loud audible sigh of relief :) It's funny I came to the same conclusion yesterday but I went about it a different way by adding an ENB. I spent the night learning how to apply a black filter to the darkest areas with the intention of making the dark areas/blacks slightly less… black. IT WORKED!
I wasn't aware of the eXo mod, big thank you for that, I will give this a try as I would prefer that over a badly optimized ENB that I crudely set up.
Thanks again for taking the time to help me and explaining it too so I learn something. Cheers to you.
P.S. I'm also an LG C2 user. We bought one for the lounge a couple of years back, and I immediately started measuring if I could fit a smaller version on my desk as a monitor.
I was also chatting with the mod author for the ELFX Fog Rework and ELFX - PreVis - patch, they realized what the issue was and released a v1.2 patch update for the ELFX + PRP patch that fixed the problem. I've tested with and without the eXoPatch, both work perfectly with an almost unnoticeable banding.
Awesome! Glad you got it sorted! And thanks for the link, I'm going to check that out because I still have a few interiors that have weird black clipping/banding in the shadowy areas.
This will conflict with mods like PRP. If you load it before PRP you won't get the changes from this mod and if you load it after PRP you lose its optimizations. As the author stated a patch is possible tho to get both.
Since build 74, I've migrated to not providing the patches anymore and having people use a script like the ones used to build PRP with to build a merged patch of this nature.
Use option 8 of PJM's script in xEdit (MDHT etc) to make a FinalCellPatch.esp as it's more tailored to your load order.
@BenRierimenu Thank you for that! I have a heavy load order in progress with a ton of cell edits and was scratching my head how I was going to update PRP and patch it properly. Was ready to roll up my sleeves and write an xEdit script but glad you saved me that pain with that link.
sad wish this was compatible with storywealth but it causes invisible walls and makes the elevator to go invisble and makes u fall through the vault and die when starting the game if not in GOD MODE hopefully a path soon

not sure if this a good idea but I use the 69 patch from prp with their 74 update
