You're the only person reporting this, so I'm thinking there's probably a mod conflict.
Are you using any mods that tinker with Diamond City in general and DC security in particular? Derek isn't simply a generic NPC wearing DC security armor. He uses DC security guard data, so any mods that touch DC security could be overriding the recruit file.
yeah i use more settler mods and there is one where you can recruit a dc guard aswell
That DC guard probably isn't the culprit, but mods that overhaul Diamond City security as a whole might be causing a conflict. Another possibility is if you installed Derek midgame, after you already visited DC.
Other than Derek, this mod is the only one I know of that features a recruitable DC guard. I don't use any of the big quest mods, though, so one (or more) of them might have recruitable DC guards.
That wouldn't explain his DC faction affiliation and Security Guard class. His only raider connection is that his vanilla outfit is long johns, and I'm not certain long johns is a raider only outfit.
I was thinking it was the only clothes the raiders gave him as they held him captive. Then after you rescue him (like the Bunker Hill traders) he returns to his job as a guard if that makes sense. But it was just a thought, it would be an altruistic decision to help DC Security (on the job board) when they won't help you.
Oh, okay. I misread and thought you meant that he was raider who was captured by DC Security. I like your idea, though. If I can figure out prisoner/captive stuff, I just might make an alternate version where he's been captured by raiders. I could use the "rescue" dialog for recruitment as I did with Arnie.
So far all they have all been esl-flagged esp's (at least the 5 now that I have installed), which is infinitely better than a straight esl. All the benefits of an esp, including prioritization and is looked at as an esl when it comes to mod count. ESL's have too much potential to be ignored or overwritten.
Yep, should be esl-flagged. Most everything I make is that way 'cause I don't know how to do the fancy stuff like scripts and textures, and all the other things that require BA2 files.
BA2 archives are the bane of my mod list, as I have hit the BA2 limit somewhere around 430 and had to painstakingly delete obsolete and not less important mods. Now I'm really happy if a mod doesn't use BA2 archives, or even better, uses loose files.
I haven't yet decided on the next one, but I may have found a way to use Casey. She won't be part of the "Big Dig" quest anymore, but the "new" version will be recruitable in the same manner as Arnie.

Maybe he was kidnapped from the perimeter by a gang Diamond City annoyed?
(Not suggesting you alter the mod.)

Is there a chance that will happen in the future?
