About this mod

Guide to proper usage of AnimeRace Nanakochan. Includes optional integration and decoupling of My Little Nanako 3.

Requirements
Permissions and credits
There are players who encounter issues with using AnimeRace Nanakochan, and this guide should help alot of people install and use Nanakochan correctly. There is a larger part of this guide that integrates with My Little Nanako 3.

I will be using ModOrganizer 2, so instructions and screenshots will be in that format, but I'll try to include notes for manual users or other managers.

There will be multiple guides:
  • Installing Nanakochan Correctly - imo best installation procedure for Nanakochan, and is the foundation for the other guides.
  • Using My Little Nanako 3 - Using MLN3 replacer mod as a player model, or you are fine with all nanakochans to look like MLN3 model
  • Harmony Patch - The previous two guides are meant as build-up for this. The goal is to be able to use human, nanakochan, and MLN3 models on the same game. With nanakochan not replacing the player or human head size, and MLN3 not replacing nanakochan.
  • nana4 Conversion - (optional) How to convert NPCs/companions into "nana4", the independent MLN race

This guide will be a more involved than just installing mods. One can argue why don't I just add the necessary file changes into this mod so players can just download it. I just don't want to include any files I do not own, which I don't even know who the owners are. I don't want to upset any other author for redistribution. If someone clarifies that these files are safe for redistribution, I might upload a version that contains less work for players.

Installing Nanakochan Correctly

1) Install AnimeRace Nanakochan
and its requirements, except RaceCustomizer. RaceCustomizer is not required!

2) Install Custom Race Skeleton Fixes
File: AnimeRace Nanakochan - Skeleton Fix (You don't need the other CaN file)
Make sure to download the correct file

3) Rename skeleton.nif
  • For MO2 users, double-click the Nanakochan mod to open its "File Tree"
or for manual users, browse to your data directory
  • Browse to /Meshes/Actors/Character/CharacterAssets
  • Rename skeleton.nif into skeletonx.nif
(or any name, so the game can't see it, but you still have it as backup just in case)

Reason: A skeleton.nif file on this path will override the default skeleton for characters, including NPCs. Because of nanakochan's model, the head for this skeleton is bigger than usual. This is the one causing people to see other NPCs with big heads. But if we're deleting it, then nanakochans will have small heads relative to its body? This is where Custom Race Skeleton Fixes mod come in. They override nanakochan so it will use a skeleton on a different file path.

Your Mod order and Load order

Playing as Human (Nate/Nora)
Before, when playing as human you'll get a big head and invisible hands. Now, you are able to play as a normal human player (Nate/Nora) even with Nanakochan installed. This is especially useful to those who has other nanakochan-based NPCs or companions installed, but still want to play as human. Also, you have now avoided big NPC heads.
  • DISABLE AnimeRace_Nanako_Player.esp from Custom Race Skeleton Fixes
MO2 users can also disable it through "Optional ESPs"

Playing as Nanakochan
  • ENABLE AnimeRace_Nanako_Player.esp from Custom Race Skeleton Fixes
  • When creating a new character, it's tempting to just customize in the mirror, but just select female and exit the creation menu
  • Once in control, use mousewheel to go into third person, and look at your character
If mousewheel doesn't work, activate baby shaun, and you should get control after a quick animation
  • Open the console (~) and enter slm 14
  • Switch preset to change into the nanakochan head, then customize your eyes and hair

Where's your AnimeRace_512StandaloneHairColors compatible files?
This is already included in the base AnimeRace Nanakochan mod, you actually don't have to download that optional file. It was only provided if you want 512 mod to be below in mod order than AnimeRace, but we still need to override 512 mod. In the screenshot 512 is already above AnimeRace so all is good. I'd assume this is more useful to non-MO2/mod manager users who install mods by unzipping directly to data folder, and need to unzip AnimeRace_512StandaloneHairColors compatible files last.

Mod Order when using AnimeRace Nanakochan CBBE Bodyslide Patch
There is an important Mod Order requirement if you have the CBBE bodyslide patch.
(Mod Order is left panel in MO2... not the Load Order, which is right panel in MO2)
Make sure Custom Race Skeleton Fixes is below AnimeRace Nanakochan CBBE Bodyslide Patch
In other words, Custom Race Skeleton Fixes should win the override, and AnimeRace_Nanako.esp should be from Custom Race Skeleton Fixes!
It is actually safe to put Custom Race Skeleton Fixes at the bottom of your Mod Order so it wins all conflicts.

Other Notes
If playing as Nanakochan, during pre-war stage, your spouse may have a big head and possibly missing hands. This is because of AnimeRace_Nanako_Player.esp also changing the spouse NPCs to use nanako race, so you can now edit while in the mirror scene. Anyway this is only for the pre-war spouse and does not affect other NPCs.

Even if it's more involved, this is a much cleaner way than RaceCustomizer, and how Nanakochan should have been made in the first place. Still, it was very hard to make a custom race back when the skeleton CTD wasn't figured out yet.

If you're happy with this, you can stop reading the guide, and now play the game. However, if you're interested in My Little Nanako model as a player, or NPCs/companions based on it, continue reading and choose between the next two sections.

Using My Little Nanako 3 (MLN3)

My Little Nanako replaces Nanakochan to a smaller model and different face.

For ease of use, I will be referring to the usual AnimeRace Nanakochan as "normalNanako", and My Little Nanako 3 as "littleNanako".

This section is for those who are fine with all Nanakochans to look like littleNanako. However, if you want to see normalNanako and littleNanako on the same game, like if you installed other NPCs/companions that are meant to look like normalNanako (Preset 4~9), you might want to skip this and take a look at the next section, the Nanako Harmony Patch.

1) Follow the first guide "Installing Nanakochan Correctly"

2) Install My Little Nanako 3 or My Little Nanako 3.17
Note that the Nexus file is in English, and the 3.17 installer is in Korean

For best results, try not to select Default in the options.
Doing so might not install some compatible meshes/textures that can cause eye clipping, etc.
Some options are safe to default, like "Face - Detail" step if you really don't want it.
Still, make sure "Face - Shape", and "Body - Scale" are NOT default.
I haven't tried to extensively mix and match though, so I might be wrong.

What's the difference between Nexus English 3.1.1 vs Korean 3.17 installer?
Aside from different options in installer, I have no idea of the full changelog.

I don't speak or read Korean, should I still use the updated 3.17 version?
Only the installer is not translated. There won't be Korean texts in-game, so don't let that hold you back in using updated version.

3) Move skeleton.nif
  • For MO2 users, double-click the My Little Nanako to open its "File Tree"
or for manual users, browse to your data directory
  • Browse to /Meshes/Actors/Character/CharacterAssets
  • Put skeleton.nif into a folder called nanarace
In the end, it should be /Meshes/Actors/Character/CharacterAssets/nanarace/skeleton.nif

If using Nexus English MLN3, you need to move another skeleton.nif
  • While still editing My Little Nanako mod's "File Tree"
  • Browse to /Meshes/Actors/Character/_1stPerson/CharacterAssets
  • Put skeleton.nif into a folder called nanarace
In the end, it should be /Meshes/Actors/Character/_1stPerson/CharacterAssets/nanarace/skeleton.nif

Your Mod order and Load order

Playing as Little Nanako
  • ENABLE AnimeRace_Nanako_Player.esp from Custom Race Skeleton Fixes
  • When creating a new character, just select female and exit the creation menu
  • Once in control, use mousewheel to go into third person, and look at your character
If mousewheel doesn't work, activate baby shaun, and you should get control after a quick animation
  • Open the console (~) and enter slm 14
  • Switch to the little nanako preset. Only 3 of the 9 presets are for little nanako. Then customize your eyes and hair.
  • If you're using 3.17, the installer does not have an option for change body scale, and your player model will be taller, but you have a big nanako head. Just go on console (~), and run player.setscale 0.86, adjust number as preferred.

Nanako Harmony Patch

As mentioned, MLN3 is a replacer for Nanakochan, so installing it also changes all nanakochans, including player and other companions installed. This patch's goal is to decouple/"separate" MLN3 from the normal Nanakochan, and be able to have both of them running on the same game. This means you should be able to freely use which player model you want to use, and have normal nanakochans be unaffected by the MLN3 installation.

Scenarios where this mod/guide is useful:
  • Player can be human (Nate/Nora), but there are both normalNanako and littleNanako NPC/companions
  • Player can be normalNanako, but there are littleNanako NPC/companions
  • Player can be littleNanako, but there are normalNanako NPC/companions
  • or any combination of human, normalNanako, or littleNanako, as player or npc - i.e. Harmony Guide

1) Follow ONLY the first guide "Installing Nanakochan Correctly"

2) Install My Little Nanako 3 or My Little Nanako 3.17
Note that the Nexus file is in English, and the 3.17 installer is in Korean
During installation there is one required choice below!

For the Eyes (second to last step in installer, the one with choices: Default, Type 1, Type 2, Type 3, Type 4)
CHOOSE: "Type 1" with description "6 types 8 colors total 48 eyes"
After installation you SHOULD have: AnimeRace_NanakoEyes1.esp
(NOT _NanaEyes1.esp, NOT _NanaEyes2.esp, NOT _NanaEyes3.esp)

Reason: This patch overrides AnimeRace_NanakoEyes1.esp, which is already alot of work, and that's the file I chose to override. The other options install different esp files. The only difference is the choices for eye color, and this one has the most.

3) Move skeleton.nif
  • For MO2 users, double-click the My Little Nanako mod to open its "File Tree"
or for manual users, browse to your data directory
  • Browse to /Meshes/Actors/Character/CharacterAssets
  • Put skeleton.nif into a folder called nana4
In the end, it should be /Meshes/Actors/Character/CharacterAssets/nana4/skeleton.nif

If using Nexus English MLN3, you need to move another skeleton.nif
  • While still editing My Little Nanako mod's "File Tree"
  • Browse to /Meshes/Actors/Character/_1stPerson/CharacterAssets
  • Put skeleton.nif into a folder called nana4
In the end, it should be /Meshes/Actors/Character/_1stPerson/CharacterAssets/nana4/skeleton.nif

4) Rename some meshes folders
  • While still editing My Little Nanako mod's "File Tree"
  • Rename /Meshes/nanarace/nana1 to /Meshes/nanarace/nana4
  • Rename /Meshes/nanarace/nana1a to /Meshes/nanarace/nana4a

5) Inside the mod Custom Race Skeleton Fixes, COPY these files:
  • /Meshes/Actors/Character/_1stPerson/CharacterAssets
    • COPY /nanarace/skeleton.nif TO /nana4/skeleton.nif
  • /Meshes/Actors/Character/CharacterAssets
    • COPY /nanarace/skeleton_faceBones.nif TO /nana4/skeleton_faceBones.nif
    • COPY /nanarace/skeleton_female_faceBones.nif TO /nana4/skeleton_female_faceBones.nif

You might not be able to copy it within MO2 file tree, you'll need to right-click open it in explorer to copy files.

6) Install this mod
This mod adds a new race called nana4Race specifically for My Little Nanako, that uses the "nana4" skeleton. This means MLN3 does not affect the normal nanakos.
  • AnimeRace_NanakoHarmonyPatch.esp is the main file
  • AnimeRace_LittleNanakoPlayer.esp (Optional, ESL-flagged) only if you want player to be little nanako

Playing as Human (Nate/Nora)
  • DISABLE ❌ AnimeRace_Nanako_Player.esp
  • DISABLE ❌ AnimeRace_LittleNanakoPlayer.esp
  • Play as normal

Playing as Normal Nanakochan
  • ENABLE ✔️ AnimeRace_Nanako_Player.esp
  • DISABLE ❌ AnimeRace_LittleNanakoPlayer.esp
  • Then follow in-game instructions like the first guide

Playing as Little Nanako
  • DISABLE ❌ AnimeRace_Nanako_Player.esp
  • ENABLE ✔️ AnimeRace_LittleNanakoPlayer.esp
  • Switch to the little nanako preset. Only 3 of the 9 presets are for little nanako. Then customize the hair only.
  • To customize your eyes:
    • Open the console (~) and enter setrace nana
    • Enter slm 14
    • Change your eye color. Note that there is a section on eyes colors list for Little Nanako.
    • After existing menu, open the console (~) again and enter setrace nana4
  • If you're using 3.17, the installed does not have an option for change body scale, and your player model will be taller, but you have a big nanako head. Just go on console (~), and run player.setscale 0.86, adjust number as preferred.

nana4 Conversion Guide

If you followed the guide, and have nanakochan NPCs/companions based on Little Nanako installed - but they still look tall, like a normal nanako, that is expected. Currently known NPCs, and companions made with My Little Nanako is using the replace-nana1race method. Here is a guide on how to convert them to nana4race.

Requirement: FO4Edit

Contrary to how it sounds, converting little nanakos into nana4race is very easy.
Follow the following image, and that's it. Make sure to save the ESP file.
Also if some of you want to attempt making an override instead and saving to a different ESP file, it can break voice file paths, and they wont have voice in game. So make sure the ESP filename where the NPC resides is the same.
