Originally the chems were called drugs and we're intended to have real world names but due to the UK banning the use of real names they changed all the names and called them chems
The only chem that ever had a "real world" name was Med-X (which was originally Morphine.) That alone is the only thing that was ever changed. And it was because of Australian video game censors that morphine was changed to Med-X.
All the chems from Fallout 1/2 have always had fictional names and origins. e.g Mentats are a fictional drug that are a reference to Dune, not a 1:1 equivalent to a drug for ADHD (I still don't understand where people get the notion that adderall is some kind of universal intelligence-booster that makes anyone/everyone who takes it smarter and more perceptive.)
