Not sure if you're active Spifferino. I'd like to seek permission or discuss a small edit of your mesh in NifSkope. I've created a mod that makes the dials on radios functional so that player's can change frequency channels and volume in game. It requires radio meshes to have attach points to function properly.
Happy to take this to private messages, couldn't do that initially because of the new Nexus forums setup.
I do want to say that I do really like this this, it's beautiful. My only gripe is that describe it as being more accurate to a 60's radio, which while this mod is, Fallout is not. The in game universe is based on a 1950's esthetic, which while sounding like nit picking, there was a difference. For the sake argument actually, the in game radio designs for 4 are almost more like 1940's designs even. Point is, felt like a weird thing to point out in the main description when the series isn't based on the 60's.
Fallout takes inspiration from many mid century years, from the 30s to the 60s, even slightly into the 70s. We see a lot of this in FO76 as well, and whether it's accepted by people or not, 76 is cannon.. Even as such, radios in this era didn't vary too much, many radios like this existed. The reason I mention in the description this is closer to something you'd see in the 60s, is because this kind of radio would have been more common during that time period as many design choices from the 40s and 50s started to be phased out. Thanks for the feedback regardless.
Fallout 76 departs so far from established canon that most players consider it a simulation meant to entertain vault-dwellers.
The biggest clue? The date on your Pip-Boy never changes.
The scorched are not canon, neither are dragon reskins or the Brotherhood being anywhere near the East Coast until 2255. Maxson recruiting members over the radio when he was supposed to be frozen is just an additional part of the goofiness.
What is and isn't canon is entirely up to the people who own the IP. If FO76 is canon, it's canon, regardless of what headcanon fans want. Cool mod either way.
This is the same series with ZAX computers, P90's, Desert Eagle's, and the bladerunner gun. I think it's safe to say that Fallout pulls from the whole second half of the 20th century for inspiration rather than one specific decade.
This is my favorite small replacer mod out of literally everything. I don't know why but I find the vanilla radio to be very ugly, and this one fits the world so much better.
Its a nice mesh, and I am not trying to belittle your work here. But you could have and should have gone the extra mile and make it illuminate to show when they are turned on. It was done on Talismans Vintage Radio replacer. All you need to do is make the glow map and get the code from the default radio. The needle animation is not needed, but the radio lighting up is a pretty big deal to indicate its on, especially in a dark room.
And please Spiff, this is not a dig at you, your work is as ever very good. I just think if this had been done a year ago, and you know why, this radio would be lighting up.
Thanks for stopping by, this is something I would definitely like to get done in the near future, I just wanted to get something out in between working on my Lost Vault Redux, as I was feeling a little burnt out and haven't released much in a while.
Would like me to see what i can do with it? I have played around with other radio meshes to make them light, so I have a pretty good idea of where to go. Remember i was making a matching console TV and Radio mesh a while back, and got the radio to show light effects. The one issue with Talismans Radio is that it doesn't light when first coming across them. They are on, but not lit, so he missed something. If you turn it off and then back on, the light works. Of course it could be my install, but I have seen across two installs like this, so its a bug. I will check back to see what your answer is.
If you want to take a look at it, be my guest. I've looked into the radio anims quite a bit and it's not too dissimilar from something like a door, with a simple open/closer nicontroller - I don't even know if it fully uses glowmaps, but I haven't been able to find one referenced in the vanilla nif
Hey Spiff, yes the default radio does in fact have a textures reference to a glow-map. The entry right under the normalmap is textures\Props\Radio1PreWar_g.dds, the _g indicates that a glow-map is being used. I was thinking it might be that BGS just didn't add the texture path data, as they do that allot in there meshes now. But the paths are all there. You probably were a bit tired and missed it. I will see what I can do to make an appropriate glow-map and see what I can do with it. The needle animation would not would with work with your radio very well. The dial on your radio is linear, meaning it moves from left to right, while the dial in the stock game radio and Talisman's have the needle move from a set point. and it swings. The same animation used on the pipboys radiation needle. You would have to locate another mesh with that sort of animation, and off the top of my head, I can't think of anything like that in the game. I will give it some thought and try an remember what might use such an animation file, and if it can be used with something like this. You can always hit me up for a talk on Discord, I have the same name, but no pressure.
Hey Spiff, I have the radio animating the dial. The needle has been disabled because there is no animation to substitute for it, so i just pushed it into the radio. But when turning the radio on, it should now light up, and when its on, and you turn it off it should go dark. I will testing it in game shortly. If it turns out to be working, I will send you a link to the updated files via a PM. I did have to alter the textures, needed to add another dial below the original so that it can have transparency. You will see what I mean when you get the files and open them.
If you're altering the behavior of the radio model, I might suggest a little cosmetic modification to the radio. Add the "Radiation Kings" logo to it. That would make it lore-friendly, and add to the immersion. :)
Impulseman45, did your edits end up working correctly in game? I very much love this model, but not being able to easily identify where the music is coming from in some places was a bit too frustrating for me. If you have succeeded in animating it in game, please let us know.
@Dragonflight: That's what I was going to say! Gotta have those gigantic, glaring corporate logos - feeds into the whole "corporate oligarchy" concept of pre-War America. o7

Or maybe perhaps a base object swapper version?
