4/30/23: Desperados Overhaul is now in version 0.3, but it uses a whole new precombine system and needs a lot of files to work. My modlist uses DO v 0.2. Your mileage will vary if you use a different version.

6/7/21: Added an extra optional in the Description page if you feel your rig can handle HD textures - Luxor published a full set of packages that are meant for you to overwrite your vanilla F4 texture files in the DATA folder. These are Gold Standard, You won't find better.

2/21/21: Mojave Geckos just released! Also added Mojave Mantis to the various Achievements in the Desc.

2/4/21: Desperados Overhaul just got precombines! Nice.

8/26/20: Added an Article about what to do if you have lots of green grass suddenly or vanilla trees appearing/reappearing.

8/25/20: Added a more in-depth line item by line item of why I use the mods/what they provide -- in the Article tab.

8/23/20: Initial release and presumably the one release. I love New Vegas and after 4,500 hours in Fallout 4 I have a set of mods I use that helps me relive some of that experience. I don't include things like Veteran Armor or that as you can do that all by yourself. This is about the immersive desert experience with a strong New Vegas vibe. As a consequence it may seem like New Vegas ammo crafting or Wasteland Imports would be here, and though they aren't, that doesn't stop you from using them (obviously).

I thought i might give this a go but its been a long time since i modded fallout manually, ive been using wabbajack for quite some time, which does most of it for you, so a couple of questions:

    1) Do i just need literally what you have listed here and thats it? Dont i need stuff like Unofficial Fallout patch/ High FPS Physics fix,  and so forth?
    2) Ive installed MO2 manually which is first time for me (only ever used it with wabba) and added F4SE & Bethini so far. Do i need any other tools?

This is a lot of manual work to do, especially for a relatively inexperienced modder like myself but im willing to go for it and learn with a bit of guidance..

Add whatever engine and bug fix mods you want including Buffout, etc etc. My lists never assume a "this is a whole approach" kind of list.

If a mod was removed from the Nexus because the author didn't want Nexus taking over their mods, you might find it here.

MO2 is a beast for helping you along. Drag and drop in the Plugins tab solves load order, but DEAR GOD PLEASE don't install in the Default profile. Keep the Default profile empty of any mod whatsoever. Create a new profile for each modlist, and you will NEVER again have to worry about which modlist you're using because you just switch Profiles; download once and done. Quite unlike Vortex. lol

Thanks for the reply bud. Ill be honest the whole thing feels daunting so if you dont mind ill keep asking questions until i feel ive got it straight. So far ive added Luxors 15 packs manually into Fallout folder & then on top installed manually into MO2, Glowing Sea Overhaul, Visible Galaxy and Milky Way none of which have esps but all of which Luxor says you need.

Now ive just downloaded Desperados 0.2. Even though you say it doesnt need those extra files i still got a warning from nexus for that whole list like forest fungus, NAC etc, but ive ignored downloading them and just stuck to what you have said here and on your main page. Can i just assume that if i install everything on your desert creature gold list one after another ill be good to go? My thinking being if its not in your Load Order then your not using it that right? Like for example did you have Unofficial Fallout Patch installed when you built this list or is your LO exactly as it says on your main page?  Things like Thuggyfied i can do later once i have got the basics straight.

I appreciate your patience while i try and wrap my head around it all :)

If it isn't listed on the list I didn't use it to build the list. Also not terribly important, meaning if you want to use bug fixing and engine fixers, do it. Wabbajack and Collections are whole packages. Many modlists here that are manual are just something you add on top of a basic foundation, or by themselves.

Be sure to check any load order mentions in the Description of any modlist. Make sure those happen. Don't just let LOOT tell you where things go. Bethesda games and mods work well when you follow Load Order suggestions from the mod authors. lol

      Hey Ken.

I have installed your list (and yes ive paid attention to any required stuff) as far as Humble Perks pack and encountered first issue. 'Extreme Survival Overrides' the next down in the list is nowhere to be found, not on Nexus or the buried mod list, any advice, do i absolutely need it to use list or?

Secondly (and remembering im pretty new to modding) MO2 will not let me drag and drop Desperados to bottom of the list (where ive read its advised to go,) it wont let me drag it past priority 40. Im not understanding why. Again tyvm for answering my questions, i really want to successfully install your list.

ps- i know what you said about 'default' but im only using this MO2 for Fallout 4 so didnt worry about it. I have other MO2's installed for other games.

      1) Looks like Survival Overrides is gone. Ignore it or find something similar IF you are wanting to use survival. I suggest Advanced Needs 76 instead because it isn't survival, it's better.

      2) Priority isn't the column to sort by. In MO2, sort by Mod Index. It's the only relevant column for Load Order.

      3) A single MO2 install on a PC is all you need. It handles all games you're playing, but you do you. ;)

Well i followed everything on your nexus page to the letter and it hasnt worked, ...

      tonight update

i decided not to quit, but instead rolled up my sleeves, completely wiped the list and and have started again a couple of mods at a time. Now im making some progress as you can see from this screenshot. Ive only created a temporary character for testing but so far ive got Desperados, Badlands and your LOD set up no problem. Ill be honest though ive got all of Luxors packs in [because i have a good machine] but im not sure it looks that differnt to me than in previous games, not sure i can tell really, except maybe i dont remember seeing green moss on the floor inside Vault 101 in the past, but i guess they must be running otherwise game wouldnt load right? :)

Nothing else installed yet, no True Storms and so forth, ill just do a couple at a time.

I'm a sucker for following guides is all, I rely on people like you to form a catered list I can pour through instead of digging through the nexus myself XD

edit: do you have a discord or recommendations that might make the messy LODs and view distance easier on the eyes since a desert theme kind of ruins a lot of the visuals in this game? trees and things usually hide those sites.

My own LOD file for Desperados Overhaul works nicely. It's part of my list. So long as you follow the load order, it looks quite nice. You can see a lot of the buildings you wouldn't normally.

I saw the Desperados Overhaul is now in version 0.3, which uses a new system of precombines AND requires a few other files. My modlist is for version 0.2. Your mileage will vary if you use 0.3.

So I got back to Fallout 4 and three days later I remember a certain desert overhaul mod compilation from a while ago... Good to be back.

Just wanted to say thank you for an awesome build, so thank you!

ps. Maybe you could get this into a Collection someday? It could get more appreciation that way

hey can you post your ini settings please? specifically, the custom ones and any setting that should be changed, update, removed and included combined from all of the mods you sourced and your preference? thanks

My .ini settings are always vanilla except my screen resolution. I make no changes to any of them. I avoid doing so unless an ENB or Reshade needs something.

yo nice list. do you happen to have a preferred ENB with settings? the Mojave enb is missing. and could you provide ini settings as well so we could tweak those properly? thanks m8

The Mojave preset is in Badlands 2 optional files. It's the ENB itself, Film Workshop, that went missing and now appears only on a Discord. I always preferred the preset myself, but any one you like will work. I will see if I can dig the Discord out of the ether.

.ini settings for the preset? Default all the way baby!

      Here is the Discord, https://discord.treym.us

Be VERY sure you get the ENB version, not the Reshade version if you intend to use Mojave preset for Film Workshop.

I wish. You could create something similar, but not quite like it in a settlement with some of the mods.

Then i would like to create something similar. Please tell me how to create some wild west settlements ?
So far, it seems Fallout 4 has only diners but no classic wooden saloons. The stores and shops of New Vegas. I wish to make them in Commonwealth and in Project Mojave. What workshop/settlement mods etc. would be best ?

You'll have to go looking. I stopped being familiar with settlement building mods years back. Just search for western. Project Mojave is the only current mod I know of with New Vegas like assets.

Dusty! Thank you so much good sir! I have consumed all of your content thus far and I’m a big fan of your work. If there was a Dust T-Shirt I would buy one. lol When I get my new PC up and running I plan to follow your guide and make the best desertscape possible. I’ll be joining your discord once I get FO4 up! Thank you Dusty! :D

No problem. Also checkout my newest modlist, Deadlands. Many of the same mods but also more aggresive.

You mean this lousy store t-shirt?

So, I installed the badlands, desperados, true grass and myLOD, and changed the load order to what was recommended, but things keep flickering in and out of existence, like various shrubs and telephone poles. I'm using Vortex, if that matters.

Actually, I just looked at the plugins.txt file, and my load order decided to partially revert, which is possibly the problem. Any ideas on how to stop that from happening?

Stopped using Vortex a long time back. Went MO2 and never looked back, especially as it keeps the F4 install folder clean. Using any sort of Auto Sort including Loot can do all kinds of amazing and dismal things as well. Loot often thinks Desperados Overhaul needs to be loading very soon in the list, which is totally wrong. lol

Yeah, did a bit more research. Turns out I just needed to add it to the "Dynamic Patches" group, and everything played nicely afterwards. Now it's all working and looks great!

Expect some pre-culling items near County Crossing. Appears to be part of the DO precombines. The barge's deck near Pickman culls. Small sections of road north of County Crossing towards Greentop cull. There's a bit of that near West-tek too going south. Just culling, but expect it.

Had this exact issue for a while. Vortex as well. Vortex mod guides say not to worry about it and that mod authors only insist to put mods at the end of the list so as to avoid complicating instructions for the masses, but this set up in particular desperately needs the landscape mods to load last.
Good job chucking it into Dynamic Patches, but if u wanna be even more thorough, make a new group called "last" and make it load after Dynamic Patches. That way even the dynamic patches (some mods get automatically loaded as that category) don't end up loading before it.

Desperados Overhaul in its prior version definitely did. Be sure to snag the latest version (only a nice 11gb! lol).

Updates to mods on the list may inadvertently do so, but after all my hours playing with the full modlist I haven't seen any. Updates to their mods may by accident, so there you go. For example, Sim Settlements  (not on this list because it isn't themed for it) discovered they had broken some cells and their latest update fixed it.
