These sounds are divided into First Person and Third Person types, which means that the First Person ones are a bit louder. If, however, you find some of these sounds too loud or too quiet, please specify. It's possible to fix to some extent, even within the .esp itself - by modifying some values in FO4Edit, without touching the sound files (which would be much more time consuming).

For those who would like to quickly patch their armor / clothing mods, I uploaded an image with some simple instructions about how to do that. It's really very easy, you only need FO4Edit. Just a matter of finding a certain footstep set (which is already there among many other sets) for your desired armor / clothing piece and saving the file.
15.01.2021 - Small optional addition: I've uploaded a small sound package to Optional Files which replaces dirt, gravel, grass and sand barefoot footsteps with snow footsteps. Sound files were taken from Skyrim assets. All these surfaces sound identical - it was a rather quick solution for winter experience, but hey: snow, right? It might be useful for people who play with a winter overhaul mod installed, where ALL ground textures are turned into snow. Some mods it might play nice with: Winter Redone, Winter Overhaul, Icepick Overhaul, Fallout 4 Seasons - Winter. Not sure though if all of these mods cover all ground surfaces with snow. Winter Redone does that, as far as I know. If you don't use any of these mods, don't bother with this addition - otherwise you might end up with some sfx oddities, like hearing snow footsteps on surfaces that don't look like snow at all. To get back to my default barefoot footsteps for dirt, gravel, grass and sand, just reinstall a sound package from my Main Files. For a full snow footsteps experience try also Project Reality Footsteps (Snow Edition) - in the Optional Files section.
06.11.2020 - Small update: - Uploaded an ESP (flagged as ESL) patched for AnimeRace Nanakochan mod. The file was created by user champions123? . You can find it in the Optional Files section. Install by your desired method and overwrite when asked.
05.11.2020 - Small update: - ESL flagged version of the main ESP file, downloadable in the Main Files section - A package of ESP files (ESL flagged), patched for Unique Player and Followers REDUX mod. It can be found in the Optional Files section. This is only for MANUAL INSTALLATION, because there are 15 different versions of the ESP my ESP file in there - I didn't want to clutter the downloads tab with so many separate files. To install, just unzip the package somewhere and copy the Data folder from one of the subfolders in the package to your game folder (where the .exe is).
Version 1.4 - 1) Decided to change the structure of the installation files: since now there are two sound packages to choose from, it would be better to install the .esp file separately. After installing the main file you only have to choose one of the packages and change them whenever you want, without reinstalling the esp. - 2) There are two sound packages available for download - one to choose at a time: the only difference between them is the walking and running footstep set for ctone / concrete surfaces. Some users suggested that my original sounds were a bit too forceful and had too much of shuffling movement effect, so I tried to make an optional version where these sounds are slightly more subtle and shorter. These are included in the "Sound Package - alternative version" in the Main Files. If you prefer the sounds from my initial release, just install the "Sound Package - original version" from the Main Files. - 3) Another change is the barefoot footstep set for those vinyl / linoleum floors in the vaults. These sounds have a slight reverb in them - unfortunately it was the best what I could find - but assuming that this type of surface can be found almost only in the vault corridors and rooms, then a little echo actually makes sense. - 4) Last change is a subtle difference between walking and running footsteps on stone / concrete. Running sounds are slightly shorter than the walking ones, which makes them a bit more realistic, I think. - 5) All changes from previous versions are included.
Version 1.3 - I decided to add the whole barefoot footstep set to npc characters. You should now hear all these new sounds if some npcs happen to be naked or wearing a patched barefoot outfit, including followers. Haven't tested it very thoroughly, but should work for all human / ghoul characters. I also made the footsteps change their tone slightly at random, which should create a bit more natural feeling. Vault floor fix, metal stairs fix and carpet sounds for cloth materials - all these things are included in this update. You can also find versions for Unique Player mods in the Optional Files section. If I messed up something with the updates, please let me know, will try to fix.
Version 1.2 - I added optional version of the main .esp file for people who use Fusion Girl Unique Player mod.
Version 1.2 - I added optional versions of the main .esp file for people who use Unique Player or Unique Followers or both mods. I just followed the same method as GrozaTerroristow in his mod, only my versions overwrite the main file, so you can have my original .esp checked in the mod manager, while overwriting it manually or through the manager. I just thought it convenient. Also, hope I did everything right... If not, please let me know, I will make these files with separate names. You can do it yourself too - renaming the .esp file won't break anything "inside", but you should probably deactivate my original .esp file.
Version 1.2 - I included the fix for vault floor surfaces, fixed a mistake in metal stairs records, and added carpet footstep set to cloth materials. You will now hear these soft walking, sneaking and running footsteps when you move over beds or mattresses, even armchairs and couches.
Version 1.1 - I just added a small update which adds stone / concrete barefoot footsteps to the vault floors. Before that you could hear the default boot footsteps while walking in the vault corridors. This appeared to be the mysterious TileVinyl material which I couldn't find in the game. It's possible to create a separate footstep set for this material in the future, just need to find some nice sounds for that. <- Deleted the file, because the fix is included in version 1.2
Hi, not sure if anyone cares, but I managed to get this mod to work with CaN: as long as you also use the "Player Unique Body" mod from the RaceCustomizer page, you can add your footstep sounds to that mod with the same method as you show in your image. I'm also using an outfit mod which I also edited to use the sounds, but if you're planning to just run around naked then I guess patching Player Unique Body should be enough (btw in case you don't remember, I'm the same guy who asked you to make the mod compatible with CaN last year or so). This should work for all custom races that require RaceCustomizer btw. Hope I helped.
A really nice mod, thank you for your hardwork. And for those who have downloaded 3rd person behavior fixes, this mod is not compatible with it.Don't know why, maybe the reason is it changed character's moving speed.
Yeah, that's it. If you wanna use these two mods at the same time, just delete the folder named "F4SE" in 3rd person behavior fixes mod. There's a file controlling moving speed in it.
I've just added a file with that, can be found in Optional Files - Feral Ghouls Addon. Those miserable guys make a lot of noise while moving, so you might find it hard to hear the footsteps from time to time, but they are there. Same sounds as in the main mod.
As fellow Tarantino's acolyte who enjoys playing female characters without any shoes, I appreciate your mod bringing the barefoot immersion to the whole new level : ) Great job!
I expect the answer is "no" but is there a way to split footstep sounds by gender? I'm using vanilla outfit replacers where I've built one gender's meshes without footwear and the other gender with. Looking at the Armor Addon schema, it seems both genders share a single record and then some fields (particularly the models) are separated by gender, but there's only one Footstep Sound field for the record. Is there a workaround I don't know about to get gender-specific footstep sounds?
Sorry friend, but as far as I can guess, you are right in your conclusions: only one footstep set available for both genders. I'm afraid I'm not knowledgable enough in modding to say if there's a possible workaround - maybe through scripts? In my understanding though, it would still require creating one more SNDD record for Armor Addon that would lead to different sound files, which doesn't seem possible... You can still try asking some skilled and experienced modders here on Nexus, who have much greater knowledge of the engine and scripting.
No worries, thanks for following up! Like I said, I already basically suspected that was the case. A somewhat exhaustive search of options in the CK and Papyrus docs yielded zero options to interact with the footstep field in-game, so yes short of creating a mod that duplicates all the vanilla outfits and then performs a scripted swap on equip or something, I don't see a way.
If there was a quick solution I'd jump on it, but it's a minor enough annoyance that I don't see much point in me putting tons of effort into solving it since I suspect not very many people use shoeless replacers to begin with, and the few who do probably do it for both genders if so, not just one.
Sorry to hear that. I'll try to check this weekend, although I'm quite sure that I tested this patch before release - it was long ago, but I guess I wouldn't have published the patch if it didn't work. I'll try to check soon though, like I said.
Ok, I've tested the game with just CBBE, Vulpin Race mod, my barefoot footstep mod and the patch for Vulpin Race. Working for me without problems, I can hear all barefoot sounds. I'm afraid you need to check your mods for possible conflicts - maybe other body mods, or footstep sound mods?
Yes, you definitely need one of the sound packs (as explained on my description page and in the downloads under the main file). If you didn't download and install it in the first place, then this might be the reason why you didn't hear any sounds.
(Edit, ignore previous question) So I have it working now, does the vulpine patch add new custom sounds, or is it just a patch that makes it work because it's a custom race/different body or something? Either way, at least something is working now. I just don't know if it's the normal sounds, or some sort of special, muffled fur sounds I should be hearing.
The patch is just an .esp file to make the mod work for Vulpin Race. Sounds come from the package which is the same for all versions of the mod. If you would like special "animal" footsteps, I'm afraid you need to ask someone else to create those. I'm not interested in making a separate sound set for Vulpin.
Recently trying to fix FO4 errors ive been having, and wondered where my barefoot sounds had gone. I used to have them all the time by just leaving my character barefoot, but not they only work if the char is completely nude.
Is there any way to have it so the shoes clothing piece overwrites the boot sounds? Or at least removing the "default" foot sounds from outfits? Example - i have 4 pieces of gear on, they all have "default foot step" sound entry, but i want barefoot char, so i leave the char shoes off? My presumption was that fallout used the slot 41 / 33 item to determine footsteps sounds but it doesnt seem to be that way? In short, am i going to need to edit every item to remove the default footstep sounds XD
As far as I remember, default Fallout 4 outfit system is divided into two types: 1. CLOTHING sets, which include shoes and occupy 33 slot (full body slot). These have the default footstep sound set attached (you can hear shoe footsteps while wearing those). If it wasn't done that way, you wouldn't hear anything while moving your character. 2. ARMOR pieces, which are modular (i.e. leather / metal / combat armor pieces for arms, legs and torso) - these go on top of the base clothing sets and occupy following slots:
41 - Torso armor
42 - Left Arm armor
43 - Right Arm armor
44 - Left Leg armor
45 - Right Leg armor
These ARMOR pieces don't generate any footstep sounds (if I'm not mistaken).
However, by default, when your character is in underwear (just empty body slot - 33), you will also hear shoe footsteps - that's the vanilla game design and that's why there are mods like the original Barefoot Footstep or my extended version, which aim to fix that issue by attaching a barefoot footstep set to body slot - 33.
As for the outfit MODS: Most of the outfits which are created as a one-piece clothing like the vanilla sets, have the default foostep set attached (because they occupy slot 33). For modular outfit mods (separate pants, jackets, gloves, shoes etc.), results seem to vary. Some mod creators leave all outfit pieces without any footstep set attached (they don't generate any footstep sounds), EXCEPT for shoes which occupy the full body slot (33) and generate the default footstep sounds. In my opinion this is the most accurate approach - with barefoot footstep mod installed, you will always hear: - barefoot footstep sounds when your character doesn't wear shoes and / or is in underwear (naked) - default footstep sounds when you have shoes from the mod on your feet Some modders however don't seem to care much about consistency with footstep sounds and attach default footstep set to almost every part of their modular outfit mod (like gloves, pants, jackets etc.) Vtaw Wardrobe series is done that way, if I remember correctly. In this case you would need a patch by removing the default footstep set from almost every item of the mod (except for shoes).
So basically, i cant make shoes (slot 33) overwrite the default sounds, as anything that has "shoe sounds" on it will play too? Well damn thats gonna take a little while to fix XD Of course the alternative is to make shoe items that have footstep sounds on them, but im assuming the other clothing items will have default sounds on them and play too - hmms.
Oh in the case of editing - ive created an overwrite esp in fo4 to remove the sounds, do i just copy the records for the armor addons and remove the entry, or will it default to the previous file if the field is blank?
As I mentioned above - the way I see it, the best option would be to add default footstep set to shoes / boots part of clothing and remove any footstep sets from the rest of the outfit. This goes for MODULAR clothing mods though. With vanilla clothing which is just one-piece set, it wouldn't make sense to add barefoot footstep sounds.
As for the overwrite .esp you created - can't help with that, sorry. It seems though that it might work how you described.
I love this mod! Thank you for making it. I just learned how to do some clothing adjustments. I removed the shoes from summer shorts, looks great! I'm having some trouble connecting barefoot steps to it though. Seems there is no esp file for it? I found the shorts in the fallout esm, but did not see the SNDD entry spot. Is it not possible on vanilla clothes? Just to make sure I was looking correctly I did find the SNDD entry spot for Casual Combat Outfit from Katie's wardrobe. Update, I kept on messing around. Learned of FG conversion of commonwealth mini dresses. decided to rip the shoes from those and got the barefoot sounds working on them. :D. Realized I needed to look in armor addons as you stated and I missed. Looks like I'm out of luck on the summer shorts barefoot sound. I found the input line for it, but it will not bring up the edit option like with the others. Seems blocked. :(
Sorry, I never worked on default outfits from the game, so not sure what options they have in FO4Edit. Seems weird though that this particular outfit doesn't have SNDD entry available. Once I'm back to Fallout 4, I'll check.
Oddly enough, when i have no armor at all on the PC, the footsteps sound the same as wearing shoes. However when using this mod's shoeless option, https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/36981 the steps actually sound like bare feet.
You probably had some mod conflict, maybe a different body mod, since barefoot footstep set is attached to naked body records in Armor Addon (in FO4Edit), so you definitely should be hearing my sounds if your character is naked. The clothing mod you mentioned has probably the barefoot footstep set attached in Armor Addon as well, so I'm guessing that's why you are hearing those footsteps. If you are still playing Fallout 4, I would advise to check your mod list for any body conflicts.

The only bodymods I use are 3BBB, and it's requirements, one being a new extended skeleton.
So I have it working now, does the vulpine patch add new custom sounds, or is it just a patch that makes it work because it's a custom race/different body or something?
