    29.01.20 - New update uploaded. Made changes to the description.

    18.07.20 - New Update 1.2. You can use Overlays to apply the skins.

    30.01.22 - New Update 1.3. You can use Overlays to apply the skins. Increased number of overlays to 20. Made some adjustments to name sorting.

    24.03.22 - New Update 1.4. Body textures with Overlays were not visible in 1st person, that's now fixed by enabling Alpha Test in the material files. I finally added a translation file, but it's for the overlays only.

    Known Issues for the Overlays

    1. Using tattoo mods, which are done with BGSM materials, may have some problems with the body texture overlays. In this case try to change the order of the overlays.
    One such mod is the LooksMenu Nail Salon CBBE - EVB -Vanilla. If you want the nail colors to work with body textures, both in 3rd and 1st person, you have to apply the nail color twice. Example:

    [0] (Hand) Nails 7
    [1] Body Texture 1
    [2] (Hand) Nails 7
    The order can be set to 1, 2, 3 or 1, 3, 5 or 0, 2, 4 and so on, it's your choice. The important thing is that you have one nail color, then body texture, then the same nail color.

    2. If you change the skin tone in 3rd person, it doesn't update in 1st person. It will update on its own the next time you load your save game. Or, for more immediate approach, go to the overlay for the body texture and press X)Edit, but don't do any changes and go back.

    If you prefer to use Overlays as method to apply the skins, then you only need Main File + Update v1.4. Nothing else is required, because the origin of the body doesn't matter for the overlays.

    If you want to clear/free the Skin menu from all the Skin Overrides, then go to \Data\F4SE\Plugins\F4EE\Skin and delete the folder called UniquePlayerSkins.esp.

    Hey, I am having an issue when applying skin overlays to an NPC; The skin color of the skin overlay does not change to that of the face. So it does not match. If I change the color of the whole body, both the face and the body will change color, but they will be different for some reason.

    I am using Valkyr for the face and opulence freckles for the body. Base opulence is installed for all NPCs, and it works just fine with the Valkyr face tin overlay, but for some reason, the freckles does not when using the overlay system.

    I am probably missing something. Any ideas?

    Edit; Using the base face from the opulence skin does not work either. Which does not make sense since they are from the same mod. The face is darker than the Freckled skin textured. After several tests, it seems to be an issue with the freckeled Difussed map specifically. The S and N maps don't seem to make any difference when switched.

    In the opulence mod page, the freckled texture is only available for the player character. Maybe that is the reason why? I tried to add a player-only texture to an NPC? But why would it matter? and is there any way to fix it?

      It's a bad idea to mix opulence body texture with valkyr or other face texture. Opulence has face texture to match the body. If you use another mod for the face, the color/tone of the diffuse will not match, in this case the body will be lighter than the face. Always use opulence body with opulence face texture. If a texture is not working and can't be applied with the Tint API or as body overlay, then you need to re-compress the texture, with program like paint.net. Diffuse map may be the only one that needs it, or it could be all textures.
      For the face:

      • diffuse -> BC3(Linear, DXT5)
      • normal -> BC5(Linear, Unassigned)
      • specular -> BC5(Linear, Unassigned)
      For the body:

      • diffuse -> BC7(Linear, DX11)
      • normal -> BC5(Linear, Unassigned)
      • specular -> BC5(Linear, Unassigned)
      Error metric -> perceptual. Generate mip maps with good quality, like supersampling.

      What's weird is that I tested the base opulence face texture (vanilla replacer for all NPCS) with the freckled plus body texture (Player only) and it still does not work even though they are from the same texture mod. I am guessing the freckled texture was compressed differently since it is only for the player character and it uses a custom installer.

      And the Valkyrie face works perfectly with the base vanilla opulence body texture. So yeah, that's weird.

      Anyway, thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I will test later today and see what happens. I am guessing that to re-compress it using Photoshop (With the NVIDIA plugin) is the same process, correct?

      And the Valkyrie face works perfectly with the base vanilla opulence body texture.
      Vanilla opulence - yes. But I think the freckled one is "pure opulence", so to use it, it's required to have the matching face texture from the same mod.

      I am guessing that to re-compress it using Photoshop (With the NVIDIA plugin) is the same process, correct?
      It should be, but it's my guess, since I don't have photoshop and have never used it.

    When I first tried your Headrear Custom v1 to fix the skin tone it worked and stayed working for a while. Now that I want to use a ponytail I noticed that it has stopped working and have no idea when or why. The textures are still in the same folders I had them in and my new presets still have the "Fallout4.esm|04D0E9" renamed. Any idea on how this could happen? I tried your v2 too but still nothing.

    Edit: I was opening and closing the game, constantly cycling back and forth through all my presets and it is now working. If you have an explanation for this that would be greatly appreciated. This game sometimes man

      Rusty Face Fix can be reason for returning the head rear back to default.
      Other thing that comes to mind are the LooksMenu Skin Overrides. They can include mesh for the head rear. Like for example, I think that's the case with Hi Poly Faces Redux. It's not even necessary to enable the skin override, if you go the Skin menu and highlight one of them is enough to mess with your head rear(if I remember right).

      This is a known issue with the Skin Overrides. Consider using the Overlays as a method of applying the body textures. At least they will stick around. If you stumble upon any conflict with tattoos, try adjusting the order of the overlays.

    Hi there,

    Is there a way to make skin texture stick to unique player skins, instead of taking off and taking on clothes everytime I start a game to revert it back... It's so painful after a while...

      They do stick, unfortunately only to the body(if I remember correctly). But they don't stick for clothing, which has part of or the whole body included. Upon loading the game, the reference body included with the clothing, reverts back to default texture path. I suggest to try with the overlays. They do have some limitations, but you wont need to re-equip the clothing on every game load.

      Slots 11 to 20 are only available as Overlays, not Skin Overrides. The Skin Overrides require a source for the body - in this case the mod Unique Player and Followers REDUX. I suggest to use the Overlays, refer to screenshots marked as update 1.2. Minimum requirement for Overlays is to install Main file + Update 1.4 + JSON fix. Update 1.4 can also be installed after update 1.1. Then you need to populate folders with appropriate textures.

      It should be enough to delete the folder UniquePlayerSkins.esp, containing the file skin.json. This will remove all the Skin Overrides. Yes, updating from main file to v1.1 has added Skin Overrides for companions. 50 more names does not mean you can choose between 50 textures - texture No1 for player, Curie, Piper etc. is one and the same, just the source of the body mesh is different.

      i figured that out lol and i'm using the base 10 skin folders for skins i like it better than the overlays less complicated if i just delete them from the .json will they disappear so i can keep the 10 skins and if the skins folder also works for the overlays what are the bgsm file folders for that each have 20 slots. i wanna apologize i have read everything like 3 times it all just seems backwards to me lol

      I don't recommend editing the json, if you haven't done it before. Instead either do one of two things:

      - Uninstall just the update v1.1. But this will also revert to older plugin. If you already have a saved game with the mod, I don't know if reverting to v1 will mess something up.
      OR
      - Manually replace the current skin.json with the one from the Main File.

      In result it will only show the 10 player Skin Overrides.

      thanks i think ill do that because all the extra skin overrides just adds to much clutter for not being used lol thanks for the help so whatever i put in folders 1 through 20 in the textures will show up in the skins and overlays then correct i dont not want to add anything to the materials folders at all

      When it comes to skins and overlays you apply for the body, LooksMenu is more "forgiving" in terms of texture compression and resolution. There could still be exceptions, like I remember there was a freckled body texture, which refused to work with my mod. Re-compressing the textures through program like paint.net did the trick. Give it a try, make sure you follow the description about what to copy and where. If Unfair Skin is not working, let me know, I'll test it myself and then see if re-compressing will make it work.

    Probably it'll make me a complete idiot but I can't somehow find out a way to figure the rear head problem and I don't really know how to find this JSON with Fallout4.esm elsewhere. The skins and faces works just this problem really bothers me a lot and I've been struggling in an hour.
    I do really need some help here I'm really lost at the woods

      The custom rear head is only for females. I'm starting with this just in case.
      In the game open LooksMenu and save your character's preset(if you don't have it saved already). The preset is inside:
      Data\F4SE\Plugins\F4EE\Presets
      I recommend to backup your preset. Open the preset file, it has .json extension. You are looking for the head parts, which are at the beginning of the file, like this:
      "Gender" : 1,
      "HairColor" : "Fallout4.esm|19EE5F",
      "HeadParts" : [
      "Fallout4.esm|04D0ED",
      "Fallout4.esm|04D0EB",
      "Fallout4.esm|04D0E9",
      "Fallout4.esm|0CFB4E",
      "Fallout4.esm|0CFB3F",
      "Fallout4.esm|11CCBC"
      ],
      Then you replace the head rear with one of the custom:
      "Gender" : 1,
      "HairColor" : "Fallout4.esm|19EE5F",
      "HeadParts" : [
      "Fallout4.esm|04D0ED",
      "Fallout4.esm|04D0EB",
      "HeadRearCustom.esp|F9E",
      "Fallout4.esm|0CFB4E",
      "Fallout4.esm|0CFB3F",
      "Fallout4.esm|11CCBC"
      ],
      Save the file and go in the game to test. Before that make sure you have put the textures for the rear head in the appropriate folders(refer to article). The head rear may still be overridden by other mods, like for example when you apply Skin Overrides from the HiPoly Faces Redux. So keep a lookout and keep that in mind. I can't do much about that.

    Hi! That's great idea!
    It is just what i looked for.
    But i can't make it work. it's kinda not working correctly.
    I downloaded v1, v1,1 (with overwriting) and plugin for bodygen (with overwriting). i was trying to use override. not overlay. but skin is like in wrong place. all mixed up. what i'm missing?
    and can you please light up some info?
    what's the difference between overlay and override?
    i choosed override because i thought that with overlay PC load 2 skins together. one above another. so it's increase ram usage. that's right?

      I haven't heard about any ram usage increase, plus textures from tattoo mods have the same file size as the body textures. My advice is to stick to Overlays, if you don't want to re-equip your outfit or re-apply the override when you start your game. For overlays you need Main file + update v1.4. And don't forget that my mod does not come with body textures, the ones included are only empty placeholders. You have to get texture files from other texture/skin mods, put them in appropriate folders and overwrite the placeholders. Refer to description and screenshots.

      Now for the difference:
      Overrides can be used for replacing the body, including the textures. To replace the rear of the head with new mesh and texture. And also have option to apply new face texture - not recommended due to resetting the type of the face parts(eyes, nose, mouth, etc.). For my mod I used only the option for body and textures. But overrides have some issues, which I think also come form the game engine. On game load, for outfits showing skin, it looks like the texture is reverted back to the default one. Hence my recommendation to use overlays instead.
      Overlays are mostly used for tattoos. They require materials and textures, no body mesh.

    I realize that there has not been a new post on this for around 2.5 years, but I'll give it a go anyway.

    I do not see 20 skin options.  In LooksMenu, I only have 10.  When I look at your files I note that  Unique Player and Follower Skins\F4SE\Plugins\F4EE\Skin\UniquePlayerSkins.esp\Skins.json only has 10 entries.  And versions 1.3 and 1.4 do not add another skins.json file.
    I also looked at the esp and there are only 10 entries for Armo/Arma and the Texture sets. Version 1.3 and 1.4 do not add another esp.  So, how do we get 20 slots?

      Actually the last discussion between me and another user was back in August 2022, and I made a post to older discussion at the end of November, so don't judge only by the very first post below yours ;) . Also no offense man, but you should've read the description, the information's there. From update 1.2 I made the same 10 body textures into overlays. Then with later updates I added 10 more slots only as overlays. Read the description and sticky post for any changes and known issues. Then if you have any problem, I'll try to help, but still keep in mind that I can't fix everything.

      I have 10 skins in Q)Skin and nothing in Overlays.  I am using 1.2 with the 1.4 update. Where should I be seeing 20 slots?  Thank you.
      EDIT: Also - is the bodygen version still valid?

      Overlays kind of have 2 lists - one with enabled/applied overlays and one with available overlays. When you go to Body->Overlays first you see the list with applied overlays, meaning if nothing is applied, the list will be empty. To open list with available overlays, you press ADD. I'm making sure you haven't missed this step, if you haven't applied any tattoos before. Next you choose an overlay, apply it with SPACE and then ACCEPT twice(once for confirming your choice and once to confirm changes to overlays). Check the last four screens for reference.
      When using the overlays, the body's source doesn't matter, because you are applying just the texture. So with Overlays, Unique Player And Followers REDUX is no longer a requirement, thus the plugin for bodygen is not necessary.

    Thanks for the mod.

    What do I do if the mod I downloaded does not have hand textures? I downloaded the Oni skin textures mod, but it does not have hands. I used it on a character, and now her hands look f***ed up.

    Also, how come downloading the oni skin mod and installing it does not f*** up hands, when it does not have hand textures?

    (Edit)
    I downloaded hand textures from another mod and put them in there, this fixed this issue. However, I run into another issue; If I change the appearance of someone, save the game, close the game, and then open it again, the body textures change to default. I will add this to the bug report.

      Oni skin is created as replacement for the default cbbe body textures. Which means it is meant to work with cbbe hand textures. I can give another example - Ida body skin is also a replacement for the default textures and it doesn't have a normal map. It relies on the normal map from CBBE mod. I did mention this in the description, that some texture mods don't have all the textures. Just get missing ones from the CBBE mod archive(zip/rar).
      Textures looking like they are changed to default is actually an issue with the Skin Override, as a LooksMenu tool. Mods that use skin overrides are not to blame. The skin is still selected. You can re-equip your main outfit. This will fix the skin, untill the next time this happens.

      Man, you are going to hate me for this, but can you pretty please explain the process of creating more slots? I would like to be able to add as many slots as possible. Some skins have 3+ versions. Multiply that by the amount of skin textures out there.

      I assume you need more slots for female textures. I can try to describe how I did it. First I start by creating folders with placeholders for the textures. These are inside:
      Data\Textures\unique player skins\female
      You can copy from the existing folders and then rename them to skin21, skin22, skin23 and so on. Don't touch or rename the placeholder dds textures.
      Next step is to create the material files - BGSM. You will find these inside:
      Data\Materials\body texture overlays\female
      Again you can use existing material to create more and after that you have to name them - Femaleskin21, Femaleskin22, Femaleskin23 and so on. You do the same procedure for the hand materials. When done with creating the materials, you have to open each BGSM with the program Material Editor. Go to the Material tab and change the path for the Diffuse, Normal and Specular maps. For Femaleskin21.bgsm these paths must be:
      unique player skins/female/skin21/FemaleBody_d.dds
      unique player skins/female/skin21/FemaleBody_n.dds
      unique player skins/female/skin21/FemaleBody_s.dds
      This is somewhat tedious part as you have to go through all newly created skin and hand materials and adjust the file paths to the ones you created earlier. The final step is to add more overlays in the json file:
      Data\F4SE\Plugins\F4EE\Overlays\UniquePlayerSkins.esp\overlays.json
      This is how the last entry for female skin looks like:

          {
              "id" : "body_texture_20",
              "name": "Body Texture 20",
              "slots" : [
                  {
                      "slot" : 3,
                      "material" : "body texture overlays\\female\\Femaleskin20.BGSM"
                  },
                  {
                      "slot" : 4,
                      "material" : "body texture overlays\\female\\FemaleHands20.BGSM"
                  }
              ],
              "playable" : true,
              "transformable" : false,
              "sort": 0,
              "gender": 1
          },

      I suggest you use Notepad++ if you have it. If not, well, rename the file to overlays.json.txt and use a text editor. You can copy from that entry and rename appropriately - id, name and material. For example the next overlay would look like this:

          {
              "id" : "body_texture_21",
              "name": "Body Texture 21",
              "slots" : [
                  {
                      "slot" : 3,
                      "material" : "body texture overlays\\female\\Femaleskin21.BGSM"
                  },
                  {
                      "slot" : 4,
                      "material" : "body texture overlays\\female\\FemaleHands21.BGSM"
                  }
              ],
              "playable" : true,
              "transformable" : false,

      When you are done creating the overlays, save the file. If you have previously added txt extension, then remove it. Hopefully I haven't missed anything.

      You are welcome. Well, it had a rough start. Even if overlays are not meant for skins, I'd say they do an excellent job. I probably should have used them from the beginning.

      Yes, I remember it first used the skin override method. But this is way better.

      The skin overrides are still there, at least the first 10 slots. And you know what? I don't think this issue, where the skin doesn't stick around after load, is a problem with LooksMenu. Not entirely. I mean, it only looks like the skin is gone, but if you remove the clothing, it's there. My theory is that the problem also comes from the game itself and the clothing. Clothes showing skin usually have a reference body included in the nif file. I'm sure you and many others have seen and know this. The reason is to avoid clipping and to better fit the clothes to the body. The material file, which the  reference body mesh uses, is actually the same as the base game and points to default texture paths for the body. When the save game is loaded and your character wears clothes with reference body, default textures are loaded instead of the custom ones from the skin override. There is something I recently found out,  that skin overrides currently have advantage over the overlays when it comes to first person view. I haven't done any extensive testing, but I think the overlays don't work in the first person(hands seem unaffected by the overlays). But I hope this is not a huge problem and besides, if you are going to customize your character's body textures, you will probably be spending more time playing in 3rd person. Otherwise why bother do it, if you won't notice it. Anyway, these were some thoughts I wanted to share.

      Ok, I got it. Overlays do work in first person. I figured out what's needed. When using BGSM(which is the case with the body textures),  the Alpha Test option must be enabled. I'll have to update the mod again.

      Thank you.
      I never would have noticed these details about the overlays if it weren't for my experiments with Maya - CustomRace Female Preset. Her body texture is very light(in color), so it was noticeable when the overlays were not working in 1st person.
      Almost forgot, since I explained to you how to make more overlays, with the last update I did a little change in the Name of the overlays. I separated them to $Female Body Texture and $Male Body Texture. This addition to the names was required, because with latest update I wanted to include a translation file for the overlays. In the game the overlays will appear like before. The translation file is inside Data\Interface\Translations\.

      Thank you for letting me know. So are the overlay skins going to work with the Maya Race? I was thinking of getting that mod in the near future.

      I gotta send the Maya Race mod author some kudos. He uploaded my method in the optional files of the mod. The main file has to be installed first. With my method, Maya is done completely through LooksMenu, there is no race switching necessary and no conflicts. The head parts are set to human race and are equipped with the LooksMenu preset. The face texture is applied with a skin override, but don't worry, that doesn't include the body. And the body texture is applied with the overlays. Requires minor trickery, but the benefits are more. Any hair style and hair color could be used, any body(meaning file path - vanilla or unique player mod). I also enabled 15 of the vanilla eye colors(everything except bloodshot and damaged), they will benefit from texture replacer mods. Skin Tone is best done through the C)Custom Color option, important is when you are done with it, to press Enter instead of E)Accept. Everything else as well as what I wrote so far is included in a readme inside the optional file's archive. And because people had trouble with even my method, despite the readme document, I made a video for good measure, gdrive link - Maya with LooksMenu tools. Posting it here if it gets lost in comments section of Maya's Custom Race mod.

      I got carried away in explaining what I did for the Maya Race mod, so I don't know if I answered your question properly. If you are actually wondering whether you can use custom body textures on Maya, then the answer is no. Maya's body texture is specifically edited to match the face texture. Using any other body texture will create a significant difference between body and head.

      Body texture sets for mods like "Maya Custom Race" or "Quiet Girl from MGS5" are created specifically to match the textures of the custom head models. While diffuse map can be tricky to do, there is a way to make variations regarding the normal and specular maps - like for example getting normal map with muscle definition and specular with wetness effect for Maya. For this purpose can be used some resource files from OniNigma and GIMP. Tell me if you are interested and want more detail about it.
